How wonderful it was to see so many of you back at the August meeting! July had our members scattered many places and we missed each one of you who could not make it. We really appreciate all of you taking your Saturday morning to come to the meeting and hope you look forward to them as we do. There have been positive comments about the meeting room at Gander Mountain so we have booked the room for the remainder of the year. Ini- tially, we were going to try it on a trial basis but it seems to be working out really well. This has allowed the chapter the opportunity to enjoy ‘lunch’ rides following the meetings. Our lunch destination is determined by your input. Comments and suggestions are always welcome so please feel free to offer feedback or ideas as this is YOUR Chapter. We began a drawing at the August meeting for all those who submitted articles to the newsletter. Their names were placed in a “hat” and one name drawn out. The prize, so to speak, will be a gift certificate each month from one of our advertising sponsors. For August, the gift certifi- cate was from Sonic and the lucky winners were George and Ava Hensley. We’ll do it again in September so keep those articles coming! And a big thank you to David Shipp for the excellent job he does with our newsletter. It is definitely one our Chapter can be proud of. We were unable to attend the ride after the meeting due to family obliga- tions but understand everyone enjoyed….in spite of the August heat! Let’s hope our next meeting is a bit cooler. By the next Chapter meeting, we will have attended the Horizons Seminar in Morrillton. We have heard wonderful comments about Horizons and are hoping to bring back some great ideas for the Chapter – including how we can better serve as Direc- tors! And having a great deal of FUN while continuing to stay safe. So be prepared for what we hope to bring back! Members of Chapter T’s Twin City Tour Riders have now got the opportunity to become in-volved in a program that could have a direct impact to some of our own members and their imme-diate families. And if any of you are discouraged by the term RACE, the portion of the race that we will be participating in requires only one athletic ability,,, WALKING. That’s it! Simply by show-ing up and walking with the group allows this group to receive donations that, when added up, can make a difference. We strongly urge all of our members to become a part of the solution. There is a moment just at sunrise Race Day morning when we all catch our breath because we are about to be swept up in the swirling excitement of the Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure®. Nothing else is like it. The twin cities of Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas come alive at dawn with banners hung and flags flying, with arches of balloons and pathways lined with pink ribbons. A Village of tents and booths is in place as volunteers assemble to meet and greet and get to know thousands more, all wearing the vivid colors of their new Race shirts. It all seems to explode at once: the crowd gathers at the starting line, the horn sounds, and the runners are off! Read the signs people are wearing "In memory of" and "In celebration for" the loved ones we all come to honor. Watch for the drill team, the Girl Scouts, cheerleaders, the Bunco groups, a biker group, a school team, families - your imagination will go into overdrive witnessing the human stories around you. How many human stories? Well, last year we counted 6,754. Then mid-morning, everybody assembles for the ceremony of celebration. Proud and loyal sponsors come forward to take a bow. Year after year they are the benefactors who remind us what community generosity can produce. Time for the point of it all and the reason for why we are here. Fair warning, though, The Survivors’ Celebration has the power to make strong men cry and strangers hug strangers. Maybe you noticed the pink caps and pink shirts scattered throughout the crowd all morning. Now is the time when they begin to come toward the stage, one by one. They just keep coming, hundreds of survivors. Their message? Whether four days or forty years after a diagnosis of breast cancer, hope is real and strong. Survival is a celebration, but this year it is even more. This time, we all carry in us a new knowledge. We have come to understand that this profound and life-affirming force we call Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure® is also an affirmation of the power of the human spirit extending throughout the community. PLEASE, CONTACT ESTER NEWLIN FOR ANY REG. INFO.

A Fun And Wonderful Thing To Do

Join “The Race For The Cure”

October is “Race For The Cure” month. It is to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. Chapter AR-T has three families affected by breast cancer; Vivian Mount, Mary Harper(Ava Hensley’s Mom) and our daughter, Karen Dyer. They are all survivors. It has been suggested that Chapter T walk in the race for the cure. It is held on October 21, starting at 8am. It is fun and for a very good cause. It is located at the Ben and Jane Collins home at 20th. and Olive, in Texarkana. There is plenty of parking at the old Pine Street School grounds off of 20th. Street. Ava’s mom, Mary Harper, underwent a radical Masectomy in 1977. She will be 86 years young in Octo-ber. That was 29 years ago. Instead of Chemo or Radiation Treatments, she was given Cobalt Treatments.

She is a true survivor. Our daughter, Karen, was 38 when she was first diagnosed with cancer. She underwent surgery and the findings were sent to the lab to be tested. They had not gone deep enough to get it all and a second surgery was required two weeks later. After that, she began radiation treatments. Then in December of 2003, she was re-diagnosed. She had a double masectomy in Febru-

ary of 2004. On April 1st. of that year she began her chemotherapy treatments. There were eight treatments total, enduring one every three weeks. Following the chemo, she had to have radiation treatments for 26 days. Now in October of ’05 she had to have a historectomy and guess what,,, they found breast cancer tis-sue in her left ovary. Now, she is again taking treatments. Once a month she travels to Baylor Medical Cen-ter in Dallas for those treatments. The doctor has said she will probably have to take these for the rest of her life.

A Personal View On This Subject From One Of Our Own On Saturday, October 21 of this year, Texarkana again will host the annual “Race for the Cure” as part of The Susan G, Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This year, an estimated 184,300 woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer – this is about one every three minutes! Of this, 44,300 will die. Additionally about 1,400 men will develop breast cancer and 290 will die. With these numbers, it seems all of us have either known someone diagnosed with breast cancer, had a family member who experienced it, or even faced it themselves. Sixteen years ago, I scheduled a mammogram to have a recommended “base-line” mammogram to com-pare with future ones. Experiencing no health problems or other reason to have one, the mammogram de-tected a lump that could not be felt or seen. A biopsy confirmed that it was cancerous but I was very fortu-nate – it was caught very early and the cancer was confined and had not spread. It was removed and fol-lowed up with radiation therapy. Thankfully, no chemo treatments were necessary! I found out there is no

This event has been staged at this loca-tion for the past 20 years. A 1000 ft course length, a change of racing scenery and a lot of good money up for grabs, makes it very interesting for drag racing boat fans of all ages. The 1000 ft course levels the playing

field between jet boats and their prop equipped adversaries. On a quarter mile course, jets are strong in the first half, while props come on big in the second half. Take away a bit of the second half and you have

some very close racing. This event was partially cancelled last year due to the threat of destruction and devastation from Hurricane Katrina as the race sight was directly in her path. If you are looking for something a little different with a ton of excitement for a day ride, then this is it. Simply bring along your

folding chairs. There are food and drink vendors on sight with plenty to satisfy your partying appetites.

The Lake Catherine race site is southeast of Hot Springs, Ark, about an hour south of Little Rock at Exit 98, the Malvern Exit, on Ark. State Hwy. 270 toward Jones Mill. If we get a good enough response from inter-ested members, this day ride will be one event you will not want to miss. We will plan on leaving the Road Runner Station at I-30 and Ark. Exit 2 (Loop 151 exit) around 9AM. If you want to experience a new type of excitement, something a little out of the ordinary,,, then make plans now for this day trip.

BY THE BOOK The “By The Book” articles are intended to help familiarize Volunteer Leaders and GWRRA Members with the guidelines, policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Guidebook. Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District and Chapter newsletters.

In addition to: “FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE”

What does being a member of our Association mean to you?

THE IDEALS OF OUR ASSOCIATION The most important ingredient for a successful Association is the Member. Where do we find them and how do we make these people interested enough to become one of us? Before anyone can be successful in “selling” GWRRA, they must first sit for a moment and determine the reason they joined. Each of us had our own reasons, but a primary reason to join is to support the ideals of GWRRA. Let’s take a closer look at these ideals: PROMOTE SAFETY - This will help us continue to enjoy our hobby. We can also enjoy the fact that we are doing something to protect others by teaching them safe riding practices. We are saving lives! PROMOTE FRIENDSHIP - Among ALL of the biking public. What better way to enjoy our way of life than to make friends and share with them? PROMOTE THE POSITIVE IMAGE OF THE MOTORCYCLE RIDER - We have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. We must always keep “our best foot forward.”

One might ask, “How in the world can anyone deal with a situation like this?” You have to keep a posi-tive attitude and staying busy doesn’t hurt either. To begin with, Karen works a 40 hour week at R.R.A.D. In May of 2005, she married a super guy, Tony, who brought three fantastic sons into her life. They are all grown now with the youngest just graduating in May of 2006. You think her plate is full yet? Think again! Karen also goes to college, taking night classes and is set to graduate from Texas A&M - Texarkana on De-cember 16th, 2006 with a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science(BAAS). This will allow her the opportunity to teach at the high school or junior college level if she so chooses. Again,,, positive attitude enables you to hold your head up high and continue on a straight ahead path to a fulfilling life to not only yourself, but everyone you come in contact with in your daily life. We are so proud of her and all of her accomplish-ments. In an effort to show our full support, we have become involved in the Komen Race for the Cure and we urge everyone, especially our own chapter members to also get involved and help these ladies endure these times which allows them continue on with their fruitful lives. And please, do not forget to get your yearly mammogram. Thanks, Ester

More Proof… You Had Better Stay Focused When Riding On Two Wheels!

In last month’s article you read a reference I made to one of our riders and his wife being involved in an accident that could have had an ending a lot more serious and sadder than it did. In that article I strongly stressed to everyone to realize that, in today’s ‘rules of the road’, anything goes! Although it is true that it may not be legal, apparently the mind set of a large majority of drivers today allows them the privilege to do most anything they want to on our streets and highways, with no regard whatsoever to anyone else that may happen to be in their paths. “Always Expect The Expected!” Just a couple of weeks after visiting with Frankie about their misfortune, I was placed in a near fatal situation myself, in the blink of an eye,,, literally. On Monday, the 7th., I was heading home on the Wing after spending some time with the in-laws. After stopping and picking up a take home meal, I continued on toward the house. Now most you will know exactly where this inci-dent happened because it is becoming one of the more dangerous intersections north of interstate on Richmond Road. As I approached the area where Richmond narrows to two lanes, right in front of the fire station, there is an ever-increasing-in-size bump. I reached forward to stabilize my drink that I always set in the left covered storage com-partment in my fairing, so as to not let it jump out while passing over the bump. I may have been traveling around 40-45 mph as I approached the left-hand curve just as I passed Airline drive. Just to my right, I am now passing the driveways to Northwood Presbyterian Church as I start into a well known ’S’ curve. Suddenly my attention is drawn directly in front of me as I realize that, coming straight towards me, are two cars with one of those being in my lane,,, head-on. Immediately, as I initiated the well known ’counter-steer’ maneuver, I was able to flash my bright lights at least once, that I remember. While continuing to watch the on-coming car, the ’counter-steer’ move allowed me to ease across the ’fog line’ onto the very narrow right shoulder, just as the front left running light of that car flew past my left leg, missing me only by inches. Now, right here, for any of you out there that may continue to be the least bit skeptical about the Riders’ Ed Program, for your sake I hope you give this some seri-ous second thoughts. It was because of my training and participation over the last few years in Riders’ Ed Classes that I was able to immediately under-stand exactly what was happening and in keeping a cool head, use a very well known ’trick’ to avoid being seriously injured or even killed in a head-on collision. Now, in a head-on between a car and a motorcycle,,, who do you think would be less likely to walk away. Not only was I able to walk away, but I was also able to turn the bike around and catch up with the car almost immediately. I wanted to talk with the driver just to see what was, or better yet, what wasn’t on their mind prompting them to pass another vehicle in a curve. After following the car back through several housing editions that eventually led us back out onto Summerhill Road, I caught a glimpse of it pulling up in a dark area between two sections of a church building as I came out of yet an-other ‘S’ curve. I guess she thought that since this portion of the parking lot was a little dark, I would not be able to see her with the car lights off. Wrong! I pulled up to one side behind her car and lit up the brights. As I got off and started taking off my gloves and helmet and approached the car, a very scared and apologetic young lady opened the door and got out. I personally don’t know if I believe her story, about being followed by a car prompting her to pass in the curve, or not. But after listening to her for a while and explaining to her, my disgust in her driving attempt, we said our good-byes and I headed back home. Since there was no collision and no one was hurt, I did not call the police or report it. I simply hope that with me following and approaching her as I did made her stop and think a little bit about the consequences of what might have happened in another circumstance and with someone else involved. Oh yes, and if anyone happens to hear about this from another source and it happens you know this girl, please let her know that the next time she is being followed by a stranger… do not, under any circumstances, pull over and get out your car in a dark and secluded place, when there just happened to be a convenience store just down the road a couple of blocks with the parking lot lit up like Christmas. Again, I say all of this to simply make others aware of the way the public is driving these days and steps you can

known cure for advanced breast cancer. Detection of breast cancer at an early stage provides a greater chance of cure and more treatment options. And when it is confined, the 5-year sur-vival rate is 97%. So the race is not only a worthy cause for me, but also a personal one. Working thru local chapters and Race for the Cure events throughout most of the states, the Foundation is fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. So what can you do to help? Simply join other members of Chap-

ter T walking in The Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 21st. The cost is minimal - $20.00 walking fee…………….but the benefits of supporting such a wonderful cause while also getting to enjoy a walk on a beautiful October morning cannot be beat! I challenge all of you who have never walked to consider this year. More details to follow! Thanks for your support, Vivian Mount

take, through Rider’s Ed and other programs, to help yourself avoid possible injury or even death to you or your co-rider. And as always,,, Ride Smart… Ride Safe!!!.... …….. Now, you’ve probably never seen a ‘pause’ in a story quite like that before,,, but please let me explain. I had my article finished, or at least I thought it was com-pleted, until some of us rode down to Marshall Chapter I’s rally Saturday the 19th. Just about the time I stepped down off my soap box (you know the one I tend to carry with me and get up on occasionally) about the near head-on, an-other incident occurred, pertaining to the same discussion. And this time there were witnesses. Just as we were easing through Linden, which has lately been dealing with a lot of road construction, the lanes narrowed down and the speed limit dropped. We knew that, as we all had been through there recently. As we ap-proached the only signal light on Hwy. 59 going through Linden, suddenly a car I was watching that had just come through the light decided to turn left, right directly in front of me, and guess what! He was apparently exempt from having to use a turn signal… I guess. Luckily, we were traveling slow enough that his nonchalant turn into the truck stop parking lot had no virtual impact on our ride,,, literally. I would love to know what was so important to him. Well now, you get over that and continue on toward Marshall when, just as we’re approaching Jefferson, a new Chevy Tahoe decides he just can’t wait any longer to get around those three slow motorcycles running 65 in a 70 mph zone, so here he comes. I just so happen to be watching him in my mirror about the same time Dennis comes on the radio and tells me about it. Just at that time, we enter a no passing zone and this INDY driver has gotten him-self stuck out in the other lane with north bound traffic approaching really fast,,, well, probably around 70 mph. In see-ing how he is quickly running out of room, both myself and Bill Newlin immediately start moving over toward the shoulder to at least offer him some room to avoid a collision. As he is passing me, he has just straddled the center line and fortunately for all of us, the oncoming car took to the shoulder on his side, thus preventing a head-on be-tween the two of them. Now, I challenge anyone to try convincing me that we don’t need to Expect The Expected! I saw both of these individuals and somehow just knew they would do exactly what they did. PLEASE, drive defensively! It could defi-nitely guarantee a positive outcome on your day ride. David Shipp
