1.1 What is Simple Past Tense?

Simple Past Verbs consist of one word only. For normal regular verbs, add -ed to the basic verb form. (Inthis tense, we do not use -s after he, she, it, etc.)

Special note: was and were, are the simple past of is and are.

Common mistakes in forming the simple past

    a. Minah is met the teacher yesterday

    b. Minah was met the teacher yesterday

    c. Minah has meeting the teacher yesterday

Irregular verbs have special simple past forms: e.g. the past of speak is spoke. Below is the list ofIrregular Verbs:

1.2 When Do We Use Simple Past?

The simple past is the normal tense for past actions. Use simple past if you want to talk about afinished action or situation, and have no reason to use one of the other 'special' past tenses.

REMEMBER that we do not use the simple past for general truths. For this we only use

    simple present.

Words indicating time like last night, yesterday, in 1995, when I was in secondary school, threeweeks ago, etc are often mentioned to describe actions in the past. Example:

    1. We sold ten laser printers yesterday.2. The Sales Manager didn't attend the meeting last night.

Below is the list of time expressions to indicate action/s in the past.

    1.14 Analyzing Past Continuous Sentences

In the above example, both actions occurred at the same time, but one action began earlier and was inprogress when the other action occurred.

In the above example, "my studying" began before 8:00, was in progress at that time, and probablycontinued.

Sometimes the past progressive is used in both parts of a sentence when two actions are in progresssimultaneously.

In some cases, the simple past and the past progressive give almost the same meaning, as in the aboveexamples.

Fill in the blanks with the correct past progressive tense for each blank

    1. I am sitting in class right now. I (sit) __________ in class at this exact same time yesterday.2. I didnt hear the thunder during the storm last night because I (sleep) ___________ .

    OR

Write an outline of an important day in your life. Include the most important events that occurredduring that day in the past simple. Once you have written the important events using the pastsimple, try to include a description of what was happening at some of the specific moments whenthose events occurred.
