Tetsuji Yamaoka, Japan Changreng Zhou, China Local Committee: (To be announced soon.) Invitation I have the pleasure to announce that the 1st International Symposium on Surface and Interface of Biomaterials (SIB2007) will be held in Chengdu, China, on October 4 - 7, 2007.

Surface and interface forms a key scientific base and also the frontier of biomaterials R & D. With the recent development of various advanced surface modification and surface analytical techniques, the understanding of material surfaces and interfaces has been significantly increased, as with the ability to control and even to tailor the surface and interfacial characteristics for specific applications. It has been playing an important role not only for improving traditional biomaterials and devices but also for producing innovative materials for modern regeneration medicine, minimally invasive surgery and advanced diagnostics. We hope that SIB2007 will provide a multi-disciplinary platform for scientists, engineers, clinicians and medical device manufacturers to share their latest achievements and encourage important discussions for the next breakthroughs in the biomaterials field.

Chengdu, the center of science, commerce, and culture of West China, is a modern and dynamic city

which is full of vigor and has a proud history of 2,300 years. It is also a R&D center for biomaterials, involving not only local but also national universities and research institutes. The city is very beautiful and has won three heritage awards from the United Nations, including the Scroll of Honor of the UN Centers for Human Settlements. There are many World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites in and around Chengdu. Participants of SIB2007 can not only exchange their latest achievements on the surface and interface of biomaterials but also experience the city's ancient Chinese culture and beautiful natural scenery.

Symposium Format The symposium program will consist of oral presentations and posters. The oral program will include invited and contributed presentations. Contributed papers will be presented as posters. Publications A book of abstracts will be available to registrants upon arrival. Accepted papers will be published by Elsevier Science as a special issue of Applied Surface Science. Abstract Submission For abstract submission, electronic submission via e-mail is preferred. Further details will be provided at our web site www.biomatchina.com in the near future. Deadlines Abstract Deadline: May 1, 2007 Manuscript Deadline: July 20, 2007 Symposium Venue The symposium will be held in the International Conference Hall and the Jinghu (Mirror Lake) Hotel, a very nice and quiet hotel facing a lake, inside Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), Chengdu.

for its cooking, embroidery, bamboo ware, tea, etc. Balmy, often misty, weather keeps Chengdu green and full of flowers all year round. It provides a natural habitat for giant pandas. The National Giant Panda Breeding Center is located near the city.

After the symposium, a sightseeing tour will be arranged for the SIB2007 participants and their accompanying persons to visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, both being internationally well-known natural scenic areas, UNESCO listed natural heritage sites, and the world biosphere reserve.
