Natural Treasures of Europe 1st EPAL of IerapetraGreece

From Ierapetra to AnatoliAlthough the name of the village (Anatoli) means East, it is located at the west of the city of Ierapetra, at an altitude of 600 m. with rocky formations and natural springs.

It has the characteristics of genuine Cretan countryside and healthy, dry climate.

Class B from the department of Agriculture and some other students of grade A and B, members of our Comenius team, escaped from the classroom, together with our teachers: Giorgos Petsalakis, Maria Sourgiadaki and Despoina Xomplaraki.


The teachers from the Center of Environmental Education of Ierapetra organized the trip and the activities. At first, they told us about the geomorphology of Crete and the change of the landscape through the years because of the human activities.


The mountain, greenhouses in the plain and the sea: the basic elements of the landscape in the area.


We took a closer look at the vegetation and examined the special characteristics of the plants.


The game of silence was an attempt to focus on the sounds of nature.


The game of collaboration. Together we can make more that on our own.

The presence of human activities remain, even invaded by nature. A place where cereals were thrashed .in older times. Aloni.

Mr Daskalakis told us its history and explained the importance of the lake for the region and the biodiversity.


We spotted some migrating birds that the lens of the camera failed to capture!


The lake of Bramiana, created after the construction of the dam, for the irrigation needs of the agricultural area of Ierapetra.


We saw, we wondered, we asked, we learnt.
