• Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government* for a redress of grievances.

not set up or support an official religion for the country- Establishment Clause*
FREED0M OF SPEECH• Say what you
think without fear of being punished by government.*
FREEDOM OF PRESS
• Forbids government censorship of the press.*
JOHN PETER ZENGER
• John Peter Zenger was a German immigrant who printed a publication called The New York Weekly Journal. This publication harshly pointed out the actions of the corrupt royal governor, William S. Cosby.• Further established the freedom of press by trial.*
FREEDOM OF ASSEMBLY
• Freedom of Assembly-Gather in groups, meetings, parades, and protests.*
FREEDOM OF PETITION
• A formal request for the government to act.
