Living as a Liberation Community
God of freedom your invitation to a life of liberation never ceases You call us to give faithful witness to your love justice and freedom May we be steadfast in faith and our lives and community marked by our thanksgiving and joy Amen
This weekrsquos readings centre around the conflict be-tween fear and bold faith to walk with God despite the obstacles the world throws at us Using the story of
a golden calf as a mirror for the times we fall short of Godrsquos vision let us put on the robe of faith and justice
Exodus 32 contains what is likely one of the most confusing and dramatic stories in the Hebrew Scriptures It has been interpreted in myriad ways but mostly as a cautionary tale of turning toward other gods However a reader with strong interfaith allegiances can glean different ndash perhaps deeper meanings from the story Meanings that centre on liberation fear and the challenge of working toward the social justice and liberation that is Godrsquos vision The people afraid that Moses will not return to them turn to Aaronrsquos leadership They turn in all of their gold to create a golden calf to wor-ship Moses returns to deliver a message of Godrsquos simul-taneous anger and forgiveness We might call the people impatient unfaithful jealous fearful ndash but we might also call them tirelessly determined even though misguided in their quest to find their freedom in the Promised Land In a way they are like all of us doing the best we can with the information and ideas that we have The people are fearful and one could argue that they turn their backs on God but do they They might lose some faith in God but in turning in their gold they continue to participate in the quest that is most precious to God their freedom
In the story of the golden calf Moses stands according to Psalm 1061ndash6 19ndash23 ldquoin the breachrdquo that has developed between God and the rest of the community Moses repairs the broken trust on both sides calling God and the people
back into covenant Who stands in the breach today How can we be people who repair broken trust between different entities What kind of faith leadership and patience would that entail
Having a sense of centredness helps Paul calls for such a state of being in Philippians 41ndash9 writing the iconic phrase ldquothe peace of God which surpasses all understandingrdquo His is a plea like Mosesrsquo plea to not be afraid even when the world seems to let go of the possibility of liberation physical or social or spiritual But how does one not fear Paul seems to suggest that the lack of fear comes from a grounding in the promise of a higher more loving order
Amid these calls for peace and freedom from fear Matthew 221ndash14 seems jarring At a surface level it appears that the people who do not dress right are the ones whom God punishes Why would God do this forgetting a preferential option for the poor and oppressed God is the one who teaches that fineries matter less than spirit
This is a parable and parables speak in symbol and irony Read on a deeper level the clothing signifies our spiritual preparedness for what God provides Perhaps the robe is a robe of justice or equality or community When are we so busy or fearful or distracted and forget to clothe ourselves in these values
bull bull bull bull bullTogether this weekrsquos texts ask us to slow down and recali-brate When we pray do we search for security or justice Comfort for some or comfort for all When in the search for freedom for ourselves and all people do we also miss the mark Perhaps we can aspire to do the best we can to love God and to fight for freedom and equality for all

Reflection and Focus bull October 11 2020
Adapt and use for youth and adult studies sermon seeds lay worship teams
Reflecting on the WordSeason of Creation Pentecost 2 2020
Connecting with life How do you combat fear and doubt How does
uncertainty feed your faith When have you done your best only to realize that
society or the world needed something other than what you were giving
ScriptureExodus 321ndash14 might have us wonder about what it means to lose our way even when we are trying our best
What is the anxiety and fear for the people of Israel as they wonder about Moses returning or not
How as people committed to community and justice and creating the realm of God on Earth do we sometimes miss the mark
Who like Moses alerts us today when we miss the mark on the vision of a just world
If a ldquogolden calfrdquo leads to missing the mark what ldquogolden calvesrdquo do we build personally and as a community state and nation
What should we make of such an angry God What purpose does it have in the story Does God seem wrong
Can you think of a golden calf moment ndash a moment in which people thought they did the right thing but did not ndash in todayrsquos world
What type of leadership is needed for a community to remain faithful to the God of liberation
Psalm 1061ndash6 19ndash23 lifts Moses as a leader with moral clarity who can remember Godrsquos goodness and vision for humanity
What does it mean that Moses stands in the breach What might ldquorighteousness at all timesrdquo look like
What does the wrath of God mean in this context What would it mean for us today
How does the psalm shift if we hear ldquoIrdquo in the context of community
Philippians 41ndash9 Paul is especially concerned about the shaping of community
What norms are named by Paul that might be essential for a community of liberation
What norms might undermine the life of a community Why might the peace of God surpass all understanding
What do you imagine it to be How do we discern whatever is true just
honourablehellip How might Paul have defined it What does lived faith look like How do you search for Godrsquos peace
Matthew 221ndash14 Jesusrsquo parable here is jarring but it is also a meditation on how we prepare for God and live intention-ally in our spiritual lives The biblical background suggests that the robe might stand for the work of justice What else might the robe symbolize
What spiritual garb do you want to don lately (Faith justice compassionhellip)
ldquoMany are called but few are chosenrdquo What reaction do you have to this phrase How might it be reinterpreted
What might be the dress code of righteousness
Connecting scripture and lifeAnxiety fear and a desire for quick solutions are an under-standable and common response to uncertain times
What are sources of anxiety and fear for your community
What are the sources of uncertainty in the world that evoke anxiety fear and a desire for simple answers
Where do you see leadership reinforcing those fears and where do you see leadership challenging those fears
What might you as a community of faith do to address your fears
This weekrsquos texts invite reflection on moments that make us falter in our faith the moments when our fear however small prevails over our instinct to do good
A crisis of memory is at work in the story from Exodus It raises the call to remember what it means to be Godrsquos people Faithful remembrance does not simply mean a recalling to mind It leads to action ndash action that results among other things in putting that which is broken back together re-membering Say
Focus for Worship Learning and Servingthat word aloud with the emphasis on the first syllable For this action of putting and keeping the pieces the relationships together is what it means to keep covenant with God with one another
What ldquore-membersrdquo you from individual believers into the one Body of Christ How might the Body of Christ then move into the community and demonstrate love that advocates on behalf of God

October 11 ndash Simchat Torah (Judaism)Simchat Torah is one of those times during the Jewish year that Jews are expected to P-A-R-T-Y Simcha means ldquojoyrdquo or ldquocelebrationrdquo and the Torah is the embodiment of Jew-ish learning and teaching During the year the Pentateuch (Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers and Deuteronomy) is split up into 39 separate portions One portion is read each week beginning in Genesis sometime in September or October and ending about a year later The point between the beginning and ending point is the Celebration of Torah or Simchat Torah It falls on the eighth day after the seven days of Sukkot (see Leviticus 2336) The culmination of the intense High Holyday season this day celebrates Torah as the dynamic tool of survival of the Jewish people Simchat Torah celebrations include dan-cing with the scrolls of the Torah around the synagogue
music sometimes even a little schnapps and most import-antly reading of the last portion of Deuteronomy and the first part of Genesis ndash keeping the circle complete We finish and then begin each year again because we believe that we must continue to turn to the Torah over and over again for everything is contained in it

gods Instead of GodExodus 321ndash14 paraphrased
Sandy Dodson
Moses had climbed up a mountain to talk with God He was taking longer than seemed reasonable The people of Israel became impatient irritated edgy so they sought out Aaron Mosesrsquo associate
ldquoHey we think Moses the leader who brought us out of Egypt isnrsquot coming back You need to do something Make gods for us so they can lead usrdquo ldquoOkayrdquo said Aaron ldquoTake off all the gold rings that adorn the ears of your wives sons and daughters Bring them to merdquo This they did and Aaron formed the jewellery into a golden calf a young bull The people were ecstatic They needed the assurance of something they could see
ldquoThese are your gods O Israel who brought you up from Egyptrdquo
When Aaron heard this he set to building an altar in front of the calf because there would be a worship service to honour Yahweh first thing the next day And so it happened Early in the morning the people brought offerings to the altar They sat down to eat and drink and proceeded to party
God saw what is going on (The very thing the people of Israel had been warned not to do ndash to have no carved gods of any size or shape and not bow down to them nor serve them ndash was happening [Exodus 201ndash6]) God was angry ldquoGo down at once Your people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt have made a mess of thingsrdquo
Yahweh wanted to do away with them and give Moses another people to lead (Moses could have had a dictatorrsquos dream ndash a nation for himself But that was not Mosesrsquo way)
Moses met Godrsquos wrath with calming wordsldquoWhy God would you lose your temper with your people You have done so much for them You have shown your power and strength to those ruling in Egypt Why let the Egyptians say lsquoTheir God had it in for them ndash brought them out so they could be killed in the mountainsrsquo Turn away from your anger Godrdquo
And God was sorry Godrsquos mind was changed
Spoiler alert In the verses to follow Moses descends from the mountain and becomes furious with Aaron and the Is-raelites gods instead of God are not okay It gets ugly

Bible Story bull October 11 2020
A recording of this story is available in MP3 format in the Audio Stories folder
The People Are Impatient Based on Exodus 321ndash14
Moses had gone up the mountain to talk with God Leading the people of Israel to a new land and a new life was not easy The people often grumbled
and complained and wondered if Moses knew what he was doing Moses would listen to God to find out where to go and what to do next Moses was away for a long time and the people were becoming impatient What would they do if Moses didnrsquot come back They werenrsquot going to wait any longer They talked to one another and decided to go and speak to Aaron They asked Aaron to make a god who would lead them to their destination They didnrsquot know how Aaron would do it but Moses had made Aaron leader for the time Moses was away so they were confident that he would think of something
Aaron sent them away and said that he would call them back in a short time Aaron thought for a while and then had an idea He asked the people to collect gold jewellery from their family members ndash rings necklaces earrings and bracelets The people were excited At last someone was going to help them so that they could move on They rushed around collected the jewellery and took the items back to Aaron Aaron had some special tools with him (Remember they were on a long journey so people had taken tools
that might have been useful) Aaron worked hard and the people watched eagerly to see what he would do
At last he was finished He had made a golden calf The people crowded around to look at it They thought that it was beautiful and they began to pray to the calf and bring presents to it They were worshipping the calf ldquoThis is the God who brought us out of Egyptrdquo they said Aaron made a stone platform put the calf on it and announced a festival the next day to praise God The people had a party They ate and drank and had a happy time
God was angry God had sent a message with Moses just a little while ago that the people should be worshipping the one true God Moses wanted to protect the people and asked God to stop being so angry and remember that these are the people God had brought out of slavery in Egypt Moses also reminded God of the promises God had made to Abraham God had promised Abraham that they would have many descendants as many as stars in the sky and that they would have land ndash a place to call home Moses asked God to calm down and forgive the people
This was a hard time for Moses What would happenFortunately Godrsquos mind was changed Moses was
very pleased and went back to the people and reminded them again that they must follow God

Biblical Background bull October 11 2020
Seasons of the Spirittrade is based on the semi-continuous readings of the Revised Common Lectionary
Season of Creation Pentecost 2 2020Exodus 321ndash14the focus in age-level materialsPsalm 1061ndash6 19ndash23Philippians 41ndash9Matthew 221ndash14

Special Days Commentary

Special Days Commentary

Special Days Commentary
October 11 ndash Simchat Torah (Judaism)Simchat Torah is one of those times during the Jewish year that Jews are expected to P-A-R-T-Y Simcha means ldquojoyrdquo or ldquocelebrationrdquo and the Torah is the embodiment of Jew-ish learning and teaching During the year the Pentateuch (Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers and Deuteronomy) is split up into 39 separate portions One portion is read each week beginning in Genesis sometime in September or October and ending about a year later The point between the beginning and ending point is the Celebration of Torah or Simchat Torah It falls on the eighth day after the seven days of Sukkot (see Leviticus 2336) The culmination of the intense High Holyday season this day celebrates Torah as the dynamic tool of survival of the Jewish people Simchat Torah celebrations include dan-cing with the scrolls of the Torah around the synagogue
music sometimes even a little schnapps and most import-antly reading of the last portion of Deuteronomy and the first part of Genesis ndash keeping the circle complete We finish and then begin each year again because we believe that we must continue to turn to the Torah over and over again for everything is contained in it
Rabbi Adam Morris lives in Denver Colorado and serves as a consultantto the Seasons of the Spirit editorial team He also answers questions
posed to ldquoAsk the Rabbirdquo at wwwseasonsonlineca

gods Instead of GodExodus 321ndash14 paraphrased
