CLRI 65 th Foundation day was celebrated with much fanfare. Earlier, Prof. Dr.A B Mandal, Director of CLRI, welcomed the gathering and in his welcome speech, he stressed the need for go in for playing a pivotal role for the cause of the leather sector on a global platform and cited the successful execution of some of the consultancy projects for the benefit of Ethiopian Leather Sector in this regard. Dr Vijayamohanan Pillai, Director of Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi, delivered the Foundation Day Lecture on “Advances in nano materials and their impact on energy generation and storage”. In his Lecture, he stated that the solar power cells and nano cells could solve the energy crisis of the future. India is committed to generate 20 gigawatts of electricity by the year 2020. The growing energy needs of India need to be addressed in the light of the fact that it has a vast growing population. Given the acute power shortage the state is facing today, nano technology will provide economically viable solutions to the crisis, he said on an optimistic note. Inaugurating the foundation day celebration of CLRI, Jaipur Leather Complex Tanners Association President Shri Vinod Arya, the Chief Guest of the function, said that students should come up with innovative ideas in their spheres of specialization to excel in the job and further added that in the competitive environment, in-depth knowledge in a specific field provides an edge in terms of employability and career growth. He also thanked CLRI for rendering its services, guidance towards setting up of Leather Complex and development of the leather industry especially in Jaipur region. The Guests of Honour, Shri V Bharath Kumar, CEO, Good Leather Company, Chennai and Shri D Saalai Maraan, ED, Footwear Design & Development Institute and Council of Leather Exports, Chennai, spoke on the occasion. A book on ‘Microbial Technology – Concepts and Applications’ authored by Dr R Puvana Krishnan, Emeritus Scientist, CSIR-CLRI, was released on the occasion by Shri Vinod Arya. Dr. G Thyagarajan, former Director of CSIR –CLRI, paid rich tributes to the founder of the Institution and Prof. Dr.Y.Nayudamma who was responsible for making CLRI, the largest R & D organization of the world in the realm of leather and allied sector. Scientists of CLRI whose patent applications filed during the year 2011-2012 were honoured. The function came to a close with vote of thanks from Shri D. Chandramouli, Chief Scientist, CLRI. World IP Day World IP Day

World Intellectual property day was celebrated in a befitting manner in CLRI. It aims to increase people’s awareness and understanding of Intellectual property. In his welcome speech, Dr.Subhendu Chakrabarti said about the genesis of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the CLRI management portfolio of IPR. Shri D.Chandramouli, Chief Scientist presided over the function and addressed the audience. He spoke about the importance of IPR and gave a floral welcome to the Chief Guest of the Function. The Chief Guest Ms. Suba Shiny of M/s.Mohan Associates (a leading law firm in India, specializing in IPR) delivered an informative lecture on IPR and highlighting the proper approach towards filing the patents. She also cited some of the incidents her firm experienced while handling some patents cases. CLRI Scientist and Project fellows were immensely benefitted by the programme. Dr.P.T.Perumal, Chief Scientist presented a memento to M/s.Mohan Associates for gracing the occasion by giving a thought provoking and interesting lecture. Before concluding the programme, a short Video film of five minutes was screened depicting an overall picture of IPR regime titled ‘Creating the future’. RCED (Kolkata) – PrIEST Programme Regional Centre for Extension and Development (RCED)-CSIR-CLRI, Kolkata organized a seminar on optimization of waste water pretreatment system under PrIEST (Programme for Implementing Emerging and Sustainable Technologies) Dr.G.Sekaran, Chief Scientist delivered the lecture wherein he touched all the relevant points related to pre-treatment of tannery effluent which may result in improvement of pre-treatment system associated with tanneries in Calcutta Leather Complex. 130 people representing different sections of leather industry attended the seminar. RCED, Kolkata team organized a lecture entitled ‘Segregation of Wastewater and Optimization of Chrome Recovery and Reuse Process’ at Freya Design Studio auditorium in CLC on 31st May 2012 as a part of the PrIEST (Programme for Implementing Emerging and Sustainable Technologies), an initiative undertaken by CLRI in association with ILTA, ILPA and CLCTA for the leather industry in the eastern region of our country. Despite the fact that a bandh call was given by some political parties, fifty people from various sections of the industry turned up to attend the lecture. Dr. K. Sri Balakameswari, Senior scientist in the Environmental Technology Division of CLRI delivered the lecture. She explained the operation of a chrome recovery plant in a very lucid manner and shared the experience of running chrome recovery plant run in African countries. In her presentation, Dr. Balakameswari did a cost-benefit analysis and showed how the normal payback period of two years for the plant could be reduced further to make the system more attractive to the tanners. Dr. Dipankar Chaudhuri, Scientist Incharge, RCED(CLRI), Kolkata made a short presentation to provide an update on the PrIEST. Mr. Paresh Rajda, Regional Chairman, CLE was also present on the occasion. He appreciated the whole initiative and thanked Dr. K. Sri. Balakameswari for her clear and tanner-friendly presentation. RCED(CLRI), Kolkata team has organized a lecture entitled ‘Chromium Management: Looking into and beyond Tanneries’ as a part of the Programme for Implementing Emerging and Sustainable Technologies (PrIEST) in Kolkata leather industry, at the ILPA- Freya Design Studio auditorium in CLC on June28 2012. This lecture was the third in the series of lectures planned under PrIEST. Dr. K. J. Sreeram from Chemical Laboratory, CLRI delivered the lecture. Fifty-nine people from various sections of the industry attended the lecture. In his lecture, Dr. K.J. Sreeram described a number of chromium management options for consideration of Kolkata tanners. The lecture was followed by an interactive session with participants and the participants felt that such lectures helped them remaining updated. Some of the tanners sought for additional information and some sought ‘DEMO’ in this regard.

Leadership and Soft Skills Training Programme LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

National Technology Day Programme

Leadership and soft skills’ training programme had been planned and organized to enrich leadership and soft skills’ of Ethiopian delegates from LIDI (Leather Industry Development Institute) and ECBP (Engineering Capacity Building Programme). The training programme was conducted by the eminent world class trainers from M/s ZEAL training team. Twelve of the Ethiopian delegates along with eight of CLRI colleagues were the participants of the programme. The programme was for a period of one week commencing from 23rd April 2012 and ended on 30th April 2012. The training methodology, covering 16 modules, was followed with a brief introduction about the topic followed by practical activity to drive the points covered on each topic in the minds of all the participants.

MODEUROP Mr. Md Sadiq from CSIR-CLRI attended the Modeurop round table and Colour club meeting at Heilbronn, Germany during 24-25 April, 2012 and presented the ‘colour and texture trends’ for the Autumn Winter 13/ 14 season. Titled ‘India before the World,’ he traced the MODEUROP Journey in India from the last Colour Club meeting to this meeting highlighting the various endeavours of CSIR-CLRI and the Indian Tanneries. The MODEUROP members assembled around the leathers/ colours that were displayed in the three colour groups; Drama, Shadow and History to select ‘MODEUROP Colours’ for the Autumn Winter 13/ 14 season. Out of a total of 33 colours selected as 'MODEUROP' for the Autumn Winter 13/14 season for both Shoes/Accessories and Leather Garments, 22 colours featured from Indian proposals. In the Shoes & Accessories category, 15 out of 21 colours are from India, and in the Leather Garments category, 7 out of 12 colours are from India. Shri D Chandramouli, Chief Scientist, CSIR-CLRI released the ‘first copy’ of the MODEUROP Fashion & Retail Trends for Shoes, Handbags & Accessories for the Spring Summer 2013 season on 10th May. The MODEUROP Fashion Trends for Spring Summer 2013 covered styles for Men, Women and Children. The Trend Report also has a ‘preview’ of the Colours for the MODEUROP Autumn Winter 13/14 season.

National Technology Day was celebrated in a befitting manner and the event was organized by Business Processes Division of CLRI. In his welcome speech, Dr. Subhendu Chakrabarti highlighted the importance of the technology day celebration and how CLRI is making use of this occasion to invite the beneficiaries using technologies developed by this institute as a Chief Guest of the event and welcomed the Chief Guest, Shri M.V. Madhu Sudhana Raja of M/s. Cosy Industries, Chennai. Prof. Dr.A.B.Mandal, Director, CLRI gave a floral welcome to the Chief Guest and in his presidential address; he touched upon the observance of this day since the Pokran II nuclear test on 11 May, 1998. Shri M.V.Madhu Sudhana delivered a lecture on Innovative Tanning wherein he presented a picture of Tanning Drum made out of CLRI Technology by his firm, lauded the support extended to him by CLRI in this regard, telling salient features of this patented Machine(Drum) in comparison with the conventional Drums and benefits proven by demonstration done in tanneries. The programme was well attended and came to an end with vote of thanks with National Anthem.

The second Leadership and soft skills’ training programme was organized to enrich leadership and soft skills’ of Ethiopian delegates from LIDI and ECBP. The programme was conducted by M/s. ZEAL training team for a period of one week commencing from 2nd June 2012. Twelve of the Ethiopian delegates along with eight of CLRI colleagues participated in the programme.

An Indo-Ethiopian workshop on “Leather Trends, Product Design & Quality Assurance” was organized by CSIR-CLRI with the support of Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) and Engineering Capacity Building Programme (ECBP) at Hotel Desalegn, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during 21-22 June 2012. The objective of the Workshop is to enlighten the Members of the Ethiopian Leather and Leather Products Industry on

o Benefits of Advanced Preparedness o Paradigm shift in Product Design, Merchandising and Retailing o Automation in the Leather Product Industry o Need for Quality Assurance & Quality Auditing

The Workshop has eight sessions altogether and the First Session commenced with the Welcome Address by Mr.Wondu Legesse, DG, LIDI. In his address, he spoke about the historic relations between India and Ethiopia and added that the two countries have been co-operating in diverse fields and this workshop was an extension of the existing relations between two sisterly countries. He also lauded the Co-operation with India and said that the Benchmarking Twinning programmes being carried out in co-operation with India would boost existing capacity and make the sector competitive and effective in the global market. Mr. Solomon Getu, President of the Ethiopian Leather Industries Association (ELIA) extended his appreciation to LIDI and CSIR-CLRI in organizing this workshop. Further he added that CSIR-CLRI was their most apt partners as it was the hub of all Technological Development related to Leather and was the World’s largest Leather Research Institute. The result of the co-operation was already being seen after a Benchmarking Programme which aimed at helping the Ethiopian Leather Industry in the technological upgradation and value addition and progress from being ‘crust manufacturers’ to ‘finished leather’ and ‘product manufacturers’. He concluded by saying that the industry had many lessons to learn from the CSIR-CLRI experience which was so generously being shared and wished that all participants benefitted from the exercise. Dr. Mebrahtu Meles, Programme Director, Engineering Capacity Building Programme (ECBP), Ethiopia in his address stated that the Leather Sector in Ethiopia was set to play an important role in the growth of the Ethiopian Economy. The CLRI-LIDI collaboration was an important milestone in this direction. Lauding the topics selected for this workshop, he said that they would have a significant impact in helping the Ethiopian Leather Industry plan their way forward. Dr. BN Das, Chief Scientist and Head, CSIR-CLRI Shoe Design and Development Centre welcomed the dignitaries and delegates on behalf of the Director, CSIR-CLRI, Prof. Dr. A B Mandal. He said that the Ethiopian Leather Industry had been growing rapidly and the CSIR-CLRI and LIDI Twinning project was indeed a symbol of friendship and co-operation between the two nations. He also pointed out that CSIR-CLRI and LIDI had been working harmoniously on a number of initiatives and this workshop was one such example and gave an overview of the workshop. Mr. Ato Fekade, Advisor, Ministry of Industry, Government of Ethiopia in his address highlighted the high availability of livestock in Ethiopia. Lauding the LIDI-CSIR-CLRI partnership he said that this would help the Ethiopian Leather Industry to scale greater heights and achieve major growth. He also opined that the awareness generated from this workshop would act as a stimulus for improvement and future growth. He also wished all the participants well and wished all success for the workshop. The programme was ably steered by Dr. B Madhan, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CLRI, and he presented the detailed workshop schedule to the audience. Session II was marked by presentations by Mr. Ato Wondu Legesse, Director General, LIDI, Ethiopia on an “Overview of the LIDI Capacity Building Programme”; Dr. BN Das, Chief Scientist and Head, CSIR-CLRI Shoe Design and Development Centre on “Footwear Components”; Mr. Solomon Tadesse and Mr. Hailekiros Debessay of LIDI on “Evolution of the Product Design Centre at LIDI. Session III had two presentations by Mr. Md. Sadiq, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “From ‘Fashion Forecasting’ to ‘Value Engineering’” & “Trends for Spring Summer 2013 Season”. Session IV under the Caption CAD for Leather Product Design – the 3D way! had presentations by Mr. PS Suresh Kumar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “CAD for Leather Goods and Garments”; Mr. Gautham Gopalakrishna, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “Automated CAD Tools for Shoe Design”. At the end of the first day of the workshop, LIDI hosted a Social Evening at the ‘Cultural Restaurant’ and was graced by His Excellence Mr. Ato Tadesse Haile, State Minister, Ministry of Industry, Government of Ethiopia. Second day of the workshop started with Session V: Understanding Shoe Design had presentations by Mr. Gautham Gopalakrishna, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “Developing Effective Skill training Modules for Application in the Shoe Industry”; Mr. Md Sadiq, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “Understanding Shoe Design and Retail Analysis”; Dr BN Das, Chief Scientist and Head CSIR-CLRI Shoe Design and Development Centre on “Productivity Improvement Techniques”. Session VI of the Workshop was focused on the recent technology trends in Leather manufacture with a special focus on eco friendly options for Leather Manufacture and lectures by Mr. P. Saravanan, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “Profitable propositions for wastewater management”, Dr. B Madhan, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CLRI on “Cleaner Technologies”. Dr (Mrs) Malathy Jawahar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CLRI presented on “TANSOFT” – an ERP software for Tannery management. Session VII under the title Awareness Creation had two presentations given by Mr. Tsegaye Teferra of LIDI on Human Resource Development for the Leather Sector. Mr. Mohammed Hussein and Mr. Aysanew of LIDI gave a presentation on ‘WANKE SKIN: promising opportunity. In Session VIII – Valedictory Session, Mr. Wondu Legesse, DG, LIDI summarized the workshop and Mr. P. Saravanan, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI offered special remarks. All speakers were invited to the podium; discussions and deliberations were invited from the participants of the workshop. Mr. Wondu felicitated all the speakers with floral bouquets and thanked all the speakers, organizers from CLRI and LIDI for making the 1st Indo- Ethiopian workshop a grand success.

Lecture Dr.Atanu Maiti, Dept.of Bio-Chemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA delivered a lecture on ‘Mechanism of human TDG in maintaining genetic and epigenetic integrity” on 30th May focusing on how human TDG(Thymine DNA glycosylase), a fascinating enzyme in its ability to locate a vanishingly small population of DNA lesions against the vast background in cellular DNA, recognize and remove both deaminated and oxidized 5-methylcytosine(mC).

The Science Club, met on January 21st this year for its 129th session at CLRI with the twin objective of observing the Culmination of the International Year of Chemistry (2011) and to Launch the National Year of Mathematics (2012) as announced by the Indian Prime Minister last December to commemorate the 125th Birth Anniversary of the Indian Mathematical Genius, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day long programme, organized by the Convenor, Mr. M R Sridharan, Principal Scientist, CLRI, with the help of fellow convenors from UNOM, IITM & IMSc, started with a lecture on organic synthesis, and ended with a post lunch interactive Quiz on Spectroscopy by Prof. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Chemistry Department, IITM. Earlier, Prof. R Balasubramanian, Director, IMSc set the tone with his remarks on Commemorating Srinivasa Ramanujan and his Works, which was followed by two presentations in Mathematics. The 130th Meet, held at IMSc on 11th February, set up the practice of a monthly lecture on Mathematics for this year. A special talk on “Nuclear Safety, a Year after Fukushima”, was given by Dr. C R Suryanarayan, Retd. CMO, Min of Defence at its 131st Meet on 10th Mar. at IITM. Award winning Science Citizens, Dr. B. Madhan, CHORD, CLRI, and Mr. Gautam Gopalakrishna & his team (comprising Dr. A.B. Mandal, Dr. B N Das, and Mr. Md. Sadiq) were honoured by Prof. Krishna Maddaly, Mathematics, IMSc for receiving the INAE Young Engineer Award, 2011 and Prof. M Viswanathan Technological Excellence Award 2011 respectively. Dr. Madhan presented on “Stabilization of Collagen – Leather & Biomedical Applications”. The 132nd session held at UNOM on 21st April, marked the conclusion of 11 years of the Club, which began its journey in May 2001 as the brain child of Dr. T Ramasami, the then Director, CLRI, with Dr. P T Perumal, Chief Scientist, CLRI as the first Convenor. Interactive talks on subjects related to World Earth Day, International Day for Biological Diversity, and National Technology Day were part of the Meet. The 12th year of the Club commenced with the 133rd Meet at CLRI on May 12th, including a discussion by Mr. George Joseph, Convenor, Breakthrough Science Society, Tamil Nadu Chapter on A Rare Celestial Event, The Transit of Venus (which took place on June 6th). At the 134th session at IMSc on Jun. 9th, Dr. G Sekaran, Head Environmental Technology, CLRI made a presentation in connection with the World Environment Day and also honoured Dr. A Arockiarajan, Associate Prof., Applied Mechanics & Dr. Andrew Thangaraj, Associate Prof., Electrical Engineering, IITM, both for having received the INAE Young Engineer Award 2011. The former awardee spoke on “Designing Smart Materials”.
