Adams, Vincanne. 199 2 Tourism and Sherpas, Nepal: Reconstruction of Reciprocity. Dept. of Antlu·opology, Princeton University, NJ,Annals ofTourism Research, 1992 19(3): 534-554 . Abstract: Data collected during 18 months of field research among Z cohorts of Sherpas in Nepal (N=I ,059 respondents [Rs] in 249 households) are drawn on to show how, despite nearly 40 years of involvement in tourism and its heavy demands for wage labor, Sherpas (R's) have found ways to reconstitute traditional productive relations in their new economy . Sherpa reciprocal labor in the form of kinship and other types of exchanges, has been reconstituted in mountain tourism alongs ide well-established patterns of wage labor. It is suggested that the logic which informs and shapes Sherpa economic endeavors is a cultural logic revolving around tendencies toward both independence and interdependence into which new tourism opportunities can fit. 47 references . Brower , Barbara. 1991 Crisis and Conservation in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. Sociely and Natural Resources, April-June 19914(2):151-163. Abstract: In Khumbu, Nepal, Western-trained resource managers' perception of acute environmental crisis caused them to join with the national government in the planning, establishment, and ongoing management of Sagarmatha National Park. Spurred by an underlying sense of urgency, the park's planners hastily imposed imported conservation ideology and management techniques, based on western models and predicated on an apparently erroneous assessment of the nature, degree, and pace of environmental deterioration in the high Himalaya. In addition, park management failed to address actual environmental problems and undermined indigenous resource management practices. 1 Figure, 51 references . (Adapted from the source document)

Caplan, Lionel . 1991 From Tribe to Peasant? The Limbus and the Nepalese State. School Oriental and African Studies, University of London Journal of peasant studies, Jan . 1991 18(2):305-321. Abstract: Based on fieldwork conducted in 1964-65 and in the late 1980's and secondary data, the demise of the kipat communal land tenure system of the Limbus tribal group in Nepal is explored. The monarchy, in order to incorporate the Limbus into the state, transformation from the kipat and encouraged immigration of high caste Hindus into the region, resulting in a tribal to a peasant economy. The importance of the land to the Limbus and the effects of the loss of communal land on their identity are considered. 42 references. (Adapted from the source document)
