The 1962 Principal File, which is more than twice the size of the 1961 Principal File, reflects both the broad range of correspondence which Eisenhower and his staff carried on and the busy schedule the General maintained. Throughout this collection are many references by staff members--including Ann Whitman, Jack Good, and General Schulz--to the large volume of mail which inundated Eisenhower’s offices. He received countless requests for autographs, photographs, statements, speeches and public appearances. Eisenhower, particularly, felt considerable pressure as many former political acquaintances clamored for his public support and endorsement during the 1962 congressional campaign. Besides routine correspondence, this file includes many letters which discuss issues of national and international importance. Trade barriers, tariffs, the “military-industrial complex,” the U.S. military built up the United Nations, the Cuban Missile Crisis, NATO, U.S. policy on Europe and the USSR, the space race, and Franco-German relations are only a few of the subjects treated. Additional topics which appear in this material include Republican politics, the 1962 campaign, the ACLU, civil rights, People-to-People, a world college, the item veto, and the role of the Supreme Court. In 1962 Eisenhower continued to correspond with many prominent individuals. Among his pen pals were foreign dignitaries such as Konrad Adenauer, Anthony Eden and Winston Churchill. Many prominent American politicians sought Eisenhower’s support and advice during this election year; among these were Ray Bliss, Barry Goldwater, Leonard Hall, and George Romney. EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.: POST-PRESIDENTIAL PAPERS, 1961-69

1962 PRINCIPAL FILE

Series Description

The 1962 Principal File, which served as the main office file for Eisenhower’s Gettysburg office, is divided into three parts. The first is a subject file which contains such categories as appointments, autographs, gifts, invitations, messages, political affairs, and trips. This file, comprised of twenty-seven boxes, is arranged in alphabetical order by name of subject or category. The trip file, which makes up the largest category, contains considerable material relating to Eisenhower’s European trip in July and August of 1962. The twenty-box alphabetical file constitutes the second part of this series. Primarily a correspondence file, it is arranged alphabetically by the names of individuals and organizations. Finally, a four-box chronological file which contains carbon copies of Eisenhower’s outgoing correspondence for January to July 1962 comprises the third portion of the series. Much of this correspondence however, is duplicated elsewhere in the series. Former members of his administration such as Sherman Adams, Evan Aurand, Ezra Taft Benson, Herbert Brownell, Andrew Goodpaster, E. Frederic Morrow and Fred Seaton, also were in touch with their former boss. Documents in the 1962 Principal File also provide interesting insights into Eisenhower’s policies and attitudes regarding the use of his name, the display of his paintings, autographs, rules for

interviews, honorariums for speeches, and writing techniques. A list of Republican leaders favored by Eisenhower makes for interesting reading, as does his appraisal of John Emmet Hughes’ book, Ordeal of Power and his analysis of the Battle of Gettysburg. Additional information on both Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower and their life in Gettysburg and California may be found scattered throughout these files.
