This week I will continue to explain the Turnaround Program. We have been having weekly meetings with the Turnaround team. Some of the topics of discussion have been parish history and make up, mission statement, finances, staff, school, tuition, etc. Four questions that came out of these meetings that are of interest to me are:

- Why should people be interested in St. Colette Parish? - Why are some people not interested in St. Colette Parish?

- Why should people be interested in St. Colette School? -Why are some people not interested in St. Colette School?

"SOURCES OF IMPROVEMENT THROUGH THE TURNAROUND PROGRAM

An analysis of parish financial performance across the Archdiocese consistently indicates that parishes with similar statistics (e.g., household income levels, October counts, school enrollment) often have very different financial re-sults. The main difference between these parishes is the degree to which the parishes employ best practices in ad-ministration and operations. When working with parishes, the Turnaround Program has achieved significant finan-cial improvement by implementing strong operating practices in a manner that is consistent with pastoral priorities. Actions often include the following:

• Understanding the stewardship priorities of the local ministry

• Beginning regular stewardship programs at the parish

• Evaluating vendor contracts and identifying opportunities for cost savings

• Regularly reviewing spending trends and more thoroughly evaluating expense items

• Improving marketing programs to attract more families to the school

• Improving the approach by which tuition prices are set and discounts provided

• Implementing strong practices for tuition collection

• Ensuring staffing levels and salaries are appropriate given the size and needs of the parish

• Ensuring any significant financial decisions are made with an understanding of actual parish

affordability

• Avoiding decisions that inadvertently create significant financial risk for the parish and, ultimately,

the Archdiocese overall"

More on Turnaround next week...

Pax,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

Monday, Feb. 5th - St. Agatha - d. 251 "In the case of Agnes, another virgin-martyr of the early Church, almost nothing is historically certain about this saint except that she was martyred in Sicily during the persecution of Emperor Decius in 251. Legend has it that Agatha, like Agnes, was arrested as a Christian, tortured, and sent to a house of prostitution to be mis-treated. She was preserved from being violated, and was later put to death." Tuesday, Feb. 6th - St. Paul Miki and Companions - d. 1597 "Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit and a native of Japan, has become the best known among the martyrs of Japan. While hanging upon a cross, Paul Miki preached to the people gathered for the execution: 'The sentence of judgment says these men came to Japan from the Philippines, but I did not come from any other country. I am a true Japanese. The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I certainly did teach the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason I die. I believe that I am telling only the truth before I die. I know you believe me and I want to say to you all once again: Ask Christ to help you to be-come happy. I obey Christ. After Christ’s example I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.'" Thursday, Feb. 8th - St. Josephine Bakhita - d. 1947 "Born in Olgossa in the Darfur region of southern Sudan, Josephine was kid-napped at the age of 7, sold into slavery and given the name Bakhita, which means fortunate. She was resold several times, finally in 1883 to Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in Khartoum, Sudan... Josephine entered the Institute of St. Magdalene of Canossa in 1893 and made her profession three years later. In 1902, she was trans-ferred to the city of Schio (northeast of Verona), where she assisted her religious community through cooking, sewing, embroidery, and welcoming visitors at the door. She soon became well loved by the children attending the sisters’ school and the local citizens. She once said, 'Be good, love the Lord, pray for those who do not know Him. What a great grace it is to know God!'” Saturday, Feb. 10th - St. Scholastica - d. 542 "Born in 480 of wealthy parents, Scholastica and Benedict were brought up to-gether until he left central Italy for Rome to continue his studies. Little is known of Scholastica’s early life. She founded a religious community for women near Monte Cassino at Plombariola, five miles from where her brother governed a monastery. The twins visited each other once a year in a farmhouse because Benedict was not permitted inside the monastery. They spent these times discussing spiritual matters."

2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me”

This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response

A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to imagine our future boldly, to discern your direction wisely, to persevere in your holy will courageously, to stay togeth-er in charity, to surrender our own plans readily, to em-brace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future gen-erations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

New 5:30PM Sunday Evening Mass We added a new mass time at 5:30PM on Sunday Evenings. We started this initiative with busy families & parishioners in mind. We know that life can be busy and that makes it hard to participate in the Sunday liturgy. Therefore, our hope is that you find this time more accommodating to your schedule. We are also trying out different styles of music and instruments for this mass.

Join the growing number of people attending this

mass to praise the Lord and continue to grow closer to God through His word & the Eucharist.

Calling all Young Adults! Come join us for our Winter Wine Series. YAM-NW is hosting a speaker program just for you:

This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine's Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the ob-ligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Len-ten observance.

PADS MINISTRY Where did you sleep last night?

Each Saturday evening to Sunday morning, from May through September St. Colette Church will provide critical services for the local homeless community by providing overnight shelter, a hot dinner, breakfast, and a bag lunch in a warm, safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere with respect and dignity for all. Our St Colette faith-based shelter site will be managed and staffed entirely by volunteers. With 22 Saturdays and 15-20 persons per Saturday we are always in need of volunteers. If you are looking for direct interaction with guests during shelter hours, consider working an evening, overnight or serving dinner or breakfast. If you like to see the immediate fruits of your labor, then consider working the clean-up shift. Are you unable to contribute during shelter hours? Consider helping with food donations. Those who like to provide or prepare food might consider donating lunch ingredients, preparing dinner or breakfast entrees.

You can make a difference All volunteers need to participate in an orientation training. Training is essential to learn how Journeys is structured, how to interact with the clients, and on general volunteer opportunities. Please consider attending one of the following trainings: These trainings will take place at Journeys the Road Home 1140 E Northwest Highway, Palatine.

MINISTERIO DE PADS ¿Donde dormiste anoche?

What is Kairos? Kairos, the Lord’s time, is a Christian experience of prayer and reflection run by a team of adults and students. This is a rare time in a teen’s life to step back from stress and pressure to gain some perspective and insight on what’s important in their lives, all in a safe and beautiful environment.

Why? This is the question you should really ask! Why should I spend time reflecting on my life at a retreat? It is hard to know until you have tried. Maybe you are scared about going off to col-lege. Maybe you are trying to decide if you want to go to col-lege. Maybe you are hurt. Maybe you are healed– and wish to rejoice. Maybe you don’t know if God really cares. Maybe you are scared to find out how much He does. There are so many reasons those who have already gone on Kairos could give you about why you should go, but first you have to choose to trust them. Thousands of teens go on Kairos each year. They go and discover who they really are and how they want to live. They come for their own reasons. All leave changed. Maybe the best reason to go is that someone cares enough about you to invite you. Talk to past Kairos partici-pants, youth ministers or priests and ask them why. Even if your decision is not to go, you owe it to yourself to explore why so many people consider that a retreat is an essential ex-perience in your life. FOCUS Teen Ministry want to thank our Kairos Alumni who spoke at Masses sharing their Kairos experience and about the Kairos (K6) Retreat in February!. Marie Lombardo, Sean Feikes, Itzel Melesio and Hugo Zarate inspired us with their inspiring experiences. Information and Registration forms for High School Junior and Seniors are available through FOCUS Teen Ministry and St. Colette Website.

Welcome to Online Giving!

Introducing...GiveCentral!

St. Colette Parish has begun accepting online donations through GiveCentral, our new online

donation service. GiveCentral is a safe, secure, and paperless way to make your Sunday offertory and

other contributions.

It was designed specifically for Catholic churches and schools in the Chicago area, and many other par-ishes in our Diocese have already found success with

it. The site allows you to make a one time or auto-matically repeating payments on a schedule that

works best for you, using any credit card, debit card or electronic bank account.

We believe that having a flexible online giving option will make it easier for many of you

to support St. Colette. Visit our website at www.stcolette.org and click on

the “GiveCentral” link or go to www.GiveCentral.org

and take a couple minutes to set up your donations. Questions? Please call the Parish Office
