1944-2019 # NWC 75 March 2019 General Manager’s Message Well, we had some winter in February, but we also had our now familiar wide temperature swings. Snow has all but disappeared a couple of times, much to the chagrin of snowmobilers! Wiarton Willie, Shubenacadie Sam, Punxsutawney Phil and Fred la Marmotte couldn’t get it together and provided a split decision on the weeks of winter remaining. So, I went further a-field, and found that Lucy the Lobster from Nova Scotia, predicts more winter to break the tie! The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a March average temperature of -1C (1 degree below average) and precipitation of 65 mm (10 mm above average) with lots of snow! Perhaps Old Man Winter will show us a few more tricks. Spring product is arriving daily in our stores and garden centres. Spring bulbs, seeds and indoor gardening supplies are now in stock. This year’s Husqvarna power equipment line-up is looking great and we will have some great new Craftsman products to show off. Your local NWC location will soon be displaying those great looking Broil King BBQ’s alongside our new Traeger line up! Spring seed and bagged fertilizer deliveries are in full swing. Consider taking delivery of your seed and bag fertilizer as soon as possible. Ask about deferred terms as part of our early take program. Be sure and contact your branch or field man with any outstanding seed orders as supply on the more popular varieties continues to tighten up. North Wellington Co-op will be receiving empty seed bags and totes along with your triple rinsed chemical containers for proper disposal this season. Pick up some bags for these programs when you come to visit. These programs are a great opportunity for us to show how hard our industry is working to protect the environment. North Wellington Co-op will once again be participating in the Obsolete Chemical Collection Program this fall, stay tuned for details. We are your “Bring on spring” store, and the first day of spring is the 20th, right after the time change on the 10th, and St. Patrick’s, the Irish snake-chasers day, on the 17th! So, with everything that is going on, give us a call……we can help get that green thumb fired up! Let’s hope we get the March “lambs” as we head into the April showers! Filling - 1/3 cup butter or margarine 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 3/4 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup milk 2 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken or turkey 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables, thawed

Heat oven to 425°F. In 2-quart saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until tender. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until well blended. Gradually stir in broth and milk, cooking and stirring until bubbly and thickened. Stir in chicken and mixed vegetables. Remove from heat. Spoon chicken mixture into crust-lined pan. Top with second crust; seal edge and flute. Cut slits in several places in top crust. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown. People together are stronger

Frost Seeding for Pasture RenovationDo you have a pasture that is getting run down? Do you want to thicken a productive grass field? Then you should consider frost seeding! This is the best way to thicken your stands, without having to rip-up the field and start again. We often get questions about when to broadcast a frost seeding, and far too often people want to do it in May. This is usually too late, as we need some repetitive frosts (hence the name) to get the seeds into the ground. Depending on what your goal is for your hay field or paddock, it will determine as to what grass or clover species/mix will work best for you. If you are considering frost seeding, talk to your NWC Crop Specialist or branch manager.

Spring is around the corner - Are You Ready?Spring just around the corner, are you ready for it? Do you know what your crop fertility programs are? Have you lined up all of your seed? Do you have your neonic seed paperwork filled out? What are your herbicide and fungicide programs for your crops? Have you thought about which cover crop you will be using on your farm this year? If you answered ‘NO’ to anyone of these questions, talk to your NWC Crop Specialist to discuss which strategy/option works best for your farm.

Cover Cropping - Red Clover is a great option! With spring around the corner, we have our first opportunity to sow a cover crop, red clover. This can be done in either your winter cereal or spring cereal crop. If you are broadcasting into your winter wheat stand or sowing with your spring cereal, aim for a 5-7 lbs per acre. Double cut and single cut clover are both good options, but keep in mind, double cut can get taller than single cut. When broadcasting, best to overlap to ensure good seed coverage over the field. According to OMAFRA numbers, a good red clover stand can provide the next year’s corn crop up to 50 lbs of nitrogen. Additionally, there are several benefits to adding a cover crop in the rotation which include: building organic matter, improving soil tilth, sequestering crop nutrients, breaking up compaction layers, and many more. If you have any further questions about red clover or any other cover crop, contact your NWC Crop Specialist.

In like a lion or out like a lamb? March is always a hard month to predict weather wise! One thing is for sure though, March always has us thinking Spring! Whether you are planning your next addition to your raised vegetable beds, or dreaming of the sweet scents of perennial blooms, this month will surely have you looking forward to what spring will bring this year!

While we cannot be outside tending to the beds right now, we can at least get our hands dirty with some seed starting, and houseplant projects. It’s a great time to re-pot some of those tired houseplants, fertilize your tropicals, orchids and violets, and edit out any houseplants that are past their prime. Are there any new or different houseplants you are looking for? Take a peek at our garden centres, as indoor live goods will be coming in regularly now!

One houseplant that we get a lot of questions about is ferns. These plants have earned the reputation of being difficult, but in reality, with a little practise and care, ferns can make a lovely addition to any room. A few things that ferns dislike are drafts, dry air and temperature extremes. All ferns love moisture and should be placed in humid conditions; this means they are best in rooms like a bathroom or heated sunroom. To help humidity levels, ferns like to be misted regularly, and you can stand their pots on trays with pebbles, and maintain a ½ inch water level. Individual variety of fern will determine the temperature range your fern can tolerate, but in general, most tropical ferns like a consistently warm room 60-70 F (15-21 C.). Regular watering (without drying out in between, and not being let stand in water), is all you need for a fern watering regime. Most ferns do not require fertilizing in the winter (let them rest), but in the spring and summer, feed every 2-4 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer.

Boston and Kimberly Queen ferns are popular larger ferns, and these gorgeous, full specimens are commonly found on many front porches in summer. Low maintenance and look great! Ours will be arriving this spring!

Take a look at your plans for spring – is there anything you need to start in seed form now for best results? Our garden centres stock several name brand seed racks with great selection, and assortment of seed starting supplies, soils and more will get you going on your “to do” list. Our branches will also be getting in the 2019 Collection of Spring Bulbs in late March, so be sure to pop in and get yours before they are gone!

Let’s hope Wiarton Willie was right, and we get an early spring! Best of luck with all your spring gardening projects!
