THE FIRST CHRISTMAS CARD The sending of greeting cards at Christmas began in the Victorian era. Though wood engravers produced prints with religious themes in the European Middle Ages, the first commercial Christmas and New Year's card is believed to have been designed and printed in London, England in 1843. John Callcott Horsley (born 1817 - died 1903), a British narrative painter and a Royal Academician, designed the very first Christmas and New Year's card at the suggestion and request of his friend Sir Henry Cole (the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum). In 1843 an edition of 1,000 of these Christmas cards was placed on sale in London. They were printed in lithography by Jobbins of Warwick Court, Holborn, London and hand-colored by a professional "colourer" named Mason. The Christmas card was lithographed on stiff cardboard, 5 1/8 by 3 1/4 inches, in dark sepia, and shows a family party in progress, beneath which is the greeting, "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You." It also states that it was "Published at Summerly's Home Treasury Office, 12 Old Bond Street, London." The price was 1s. each. An original copy of this card is considered very rare, but copies of a facsimile reprint issued in 1955 can still be found today.

THE VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS TREE The Christmas tree was introduced into England in the early 19th century. In 1841 the German Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, decorated a large Christmas tree at Windsor Castle, reminiscent of his childhood celebrations in Germany (the Christmas tree had been a deep-rooted German tradition since the 18th century). Soon after, it became very fashionable in Victorian England to set up a large tree at Christmas and decorate it with lighted candles, candies, and fancy cakes hung from the branches by ribbon and by paper chains. German settlers had brought this tradition to North America as early as the 17th century and decorated Christmas trees were also the height of fashion in America by the 19th century. Homemade paper cornucopias, filled with sweets, fruit, nuts and popcorn hung on many Victorian Christmas trees. Glass Christmas tree balls, hand crafted in Lauscha, made their first appearance on American trees in the 1860s, primarily in the homes of German immigrants. Other early ornaments were made of lead and formed into flat geometric shapes, such as stars and crosses. "Store bought" Christmas tree ornaments were introduced around 1870 and quickly began to replace the homemade (usual ly edible) decorations. Most were crafted in Germany, from Dresden and tiny vi l lages in the Thuringian Mountains. From the 1870s to 1890s, many Victorian Christmas trees were trimmed with ornaments formed with wax in the shape of angels and children. Also, cotton-wool ornaments were used, crafted with embossed paper faces, trimmed with buttons, powdered glass and gold paper wings.

THE LEGEND OF ST NICHOLAS SANTA CLAUS

FATHER CHRISTMAS The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and travelled the countryside helping the poor and sick. According to legend, there were three Italian maidens whose families had fallen on hard times. Because their father could not afford the dowries necessary for them to marry, he was considering selling one of his daughters into slavery to get dowries for the other two. When St Nicholas heard of the family's plight, he went to their home late one night and tossed three bags of gold down the chimney. Miraculously, a bag fell into each of the sisters stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry. His generosity made it possible for all three sisters to marry. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. December 6th has gradually came to mark the beginning of the medieval Christmas season. On St. Nicholas' Eve, youngsters would set out food for the saint, straw for his horses and schnapps for his attendant. The next morning, obedient children awoke to find their gifts replaced with sweets and toys. St. Nicholas' Day is still observed in many countries, and gifts are exchanged in honor of the spirit of brotherhood and charity that he embodied. After the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, the feasting and veneration of Catholic saints was banned. But people had become accustomed to the annual visit from their gift-giving saint and didn't want to forget the purpose of the holiday. So in some countries, the festivities of St. Nicholas' Day were merged with Christmas celebrations, and although the gift-bearer took on new, non-religious forms, he still reflected the saint’s generous spirit. In Germany, he appeared as Weihnachtsmann, in England as Father Christmas, and in France, as Pèrè Noël, who left small gifts in the children's shoes. Immigrants to America brought along their various beliefs when they crossed the Atlantic. The Scandinavians introduced gift-giving elves, the Germans brought decorated trees and the Irish contributed the ancient Gaelic custom of placing a lighted candle in the window. In the 1600's, the Dutch presented Sinterklaas (meaning St. Nicholas) to the colonies. In their excitement, many English-speaking children uttered the name so quickly that Sinterklaas sounded like Santy Claus. After years of mispronunciation, the name evolved into Santa Claus. In 1808, American author Washington Irving created a new version of old St. Nick. This one rode over the treetops in a horse drawn wagon "dropping gifts down the chimneys of his favorites." In 1822 a poem by Dr. Clement Clarke Moore was published entitled "A Visit from St. Nicholas," but more commonly known today as "The Night Before Christmas." This poem gave an Arctic flavor to Santa's image when he substituted eight tiny reindeer and a sleigh for Irving's horse and wagon. It is Moore's description of Santa that we most often think of today: "He had a broad face, and a little round belly, that shook, when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly." Up to this point, Santa's physical appearance and the colour of his suit were open to individual interpretation. But in 1931, advertisements for Cola-Cola featured a portly, grandfatherly Santa with human proportions and a ruddy complexion. St. Nicholas' evolution into today's happy, larger-than-life Santa Claus is a wonderful example of the blending of countless beliefs and practices from around the world. This benevolent figure encompasses all the goodness and innocence of childhood.
