Just over the border we turn south to Lake Argyle for lunch at the Lake Argyle Resort. One of the many highlights of our tour to the Kimberley Ranges will be our cruise this afternoon from below the massive wall of Lake Argyle into Lake Kununurra, 55 kilometres downstream. The Ord River Scheme was a progressive and

far sighted move to develop the tropical north of Western Australia. During ‘the wet’ the rivers of the East Kimberley become raging torrents. At times the Ord River can empty 50 million litres a second into the Cambridge Gulf! We arrive at the hotel with time to freshen up before dinner. Ibis Styles Kununurra (ph 08 9168 4000) Day 5 (BLD): KUNUNURRA: Sunday 20 August 2017 This morning we have time for optional flights (own expense) over Purnululu National Park as the early morning is the best time to fly over the Bungle Bungles. For those of us not wanting to fly, we have a relaxed start to the day. After a slightly later breakfast, we are joined by our local guide for a tour of town. Kununurra (which means ‘big water’) was established as the residential and administrative centre of the Ord River Scheme - the huge irrigation scheme developed in the 1970s. We visit the town centre and the Diversion Dam, Kellys Knob for excellent views over the surrounding irrigated land and Ivanhoe Crossing. After we farewell our guide we visit the Zebra Rock Gallery for a light lunch. There are extensive displays of this remarkable rock only found in Australia ’s East Kimberley region. This afternoon, we have some free time back in town, then return to our motel. Ibis Styles Kununurra (ph 08 9168 4000) Day 6 (BLD): KUNUNURRA TO HALLS CREEK: Monday 21 August 2017 After breakfast, we travel south to the Argyle Diamond Mine where we meet a guide for a tour of the mine. It is Australia's only major diamond producer, producing the extremely rare and valuable pink diamonds, as well as fine whites and intriguing champagne and cognac diamonds. After the mine tour and lunch, we continue south to Halls Creek, on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. Kimberley Hotel Halls Creek (ph 08 9168 6101) Day 7 (BLD): HALLS CREEK TO FITZROY CROSSING: Tuesday 22 August 2017 This morning, we continue west through the magnificent red mountain scenery of the Kimberley’s to Fitzroy Crossing. We enjoy lunch at the Lodge, and later this afternoon we travel out to nearby Geikie Gorge where we take a cruise through this spectacular landscape. The Fitzroy River has carved its path through the fossil ‘Barrier Reef’ formed 300 million years ago, resulting in mountainous cliffs and breathtaking scenery. Fitzroy River Lodge, Fitzroy River (ph 08 9191 5141) DAY 8 (BD): FITZROY CROSSING TO BROOME: Wednesday 23 August 2017 Our destination today is Broome, but on the way we have a little detour to see the famous Boab Prison tree, 7 miles south of Derby. It was used in the early days as an overnight lock up for prisoners before the final trek into Derby. Capable of holding a number of prisoners, it has an entrance about one metre wide and two metres high. We have time here for a photo in front of the water trough – at 120m long and 1.2m wide, locals claim it is the biggest water trough in the southern hemisphere. We can purchase our lunch at the Willare Bridge Roadhouse before the last leg of our journey into Broome. Broome is situated on the coast at the southern tip of the Kimberley region. It is bounded by wide sandy beaches and turquoise water and enjoys a warm climate with plenty of sunshine. The discovery of rich pearling grounds off the coast in the 1880s led to the foundation of Broome Township in 1883. By 1910 Broome was the world’s leading pearling centre. Oaks Resort Broome (ph 08 9192 9500) Day 9 (BD): EXPLORING BROOME: Thursday 24 August 2017 We enjoy a sightseeing tour of Broome this morning. We’ll see the red rocks of Gantheaume Point, the port area and have some time to wander through the Japanese Cemetery. The cemetery dates back to the very early pearling days and bears witness to the close ties Japan established with Broome in the early 20th century. The first recorded interment in this cemetery is 1896. Literally hundreds of young Japanese divers died either from the bends (diver’s paralysis) or from drowning. A large stone obelisk in the cemetery recalls those who were drowned at sea in the 1908 cyclone. We then head to Chinatown and pass by The Sun Pictures building, the open air theatre owned by the Yamsaki family. We’ll visit Pearl Luggers to be taken through an exciting array of pearling equipment with memorabilia from actual hard hat diving suits to the hand powered pumps which fed precious air to the divers below. To hear the stories first hand is a memorable experience. The rest of the day is free for us to do as we please – perhaps some pearl shopping from one of the many outlets. Late afternoon, we’ll drive out to the famous Cable Beach where we have a very special farewell dinner planned at Zanders. We arrive just before sunset for a unique photo opportunity. Following dinner, we return to our hotel. Oaks Resort Broome (ph 08 9192 9500) Day 10 (BLD): BROOME TO PORT HEDLAND: Friday 25 August 2017 We have a very early start today as we travel through some of the most sparsely populated and remote areas of Australia as we skirt the Great Sandy Desert to the east and Eighty Mile Beach to the west. We’ll stop en-route for our picnic lunches then deviate from the Highway to view Eighty Mile Beach near Wallal Downs Station. From here we travel to Pardoo Roadhouse for an afternoon stop and then onto Port Hedland. Ibis Styles Port Hedland (ph 08 9173 1511) Day 11 (BLD): PORT HEDLAND TO TOM PRICE: Saturday 26 August 2017 This morning we join the Great Northern Highway taking us to the Auski Roadhouse where we turn off and head into the Hamersley Ranges and the Karijini National Park. We travel through the Yampire Gorge and onto Fortescue Falls at Dales Gorge. Following our packed lunch we have the afternoon to spend touring the National Park, visiting gorge lookouts such as Oxer Gorge before driving to our overnight accommodation in Tom Price. Day 12 (BLD): TOM PRICE TO KARRATHA: Sunday 27 August 2017 Following breakfast, we join Lestok Tours for the Pilbara Iron Mine Tour. After the tour and a morning break we depart Tom Price. We will make our way to the coast through the Millstream-Chichester National Park, along the Fortesque River. This tropical oasis has huge trees, ferns, lilies, rushes and a wide variety of birds and flying foxes. Here we enjoy the tranquility while having a picnic lunch. It is not far until we reach our next night’s accommodation at Karratha. Ibis Styles Karratha (ph 08 9159 1000) Day 13 (BLD): KARRATHA TO EXMOUTH: Monday 28 August 2017 Passing through the Pilbara this morning we make our way south west towards the North West Cape. As we travel along the North West Coastal Highway we have Ningaloo Reef running along the coast to our right where we are headed. We pass Giralia Station – a large (265,000 hectare) and very isolated farm which runs approximately 25,000 sheep, before arriving into Exmouth. This remote but fascinating area of Western Australia is famous for its annual fishing competition and is also the location of a jointly operated Australian/USA Naval Communication Station. Potshot Motel Exmouth (ph 08 9949 1200) Day 14 (BD): EXMOUTH TO CARNARVON: Tuesday 29 August 2017 Following breakfast we head south towards Coral Bay where we join our coral viewing vessel for a cruise around the Ningaloo Marine Park with its remarkable reef. Although the Ningaloo Reef is not as well known as the Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast, it is just as spectacular. It is also very accessible. In some places it can be viewed literally metres from the shore! After cruising, we leave the North West Cape and travel to Carnarvon for our overnight stop. Carnarvon Motel (ph 08 9941 0600) Day 15 (BLD): CARNARVON TO MONKEY MIA: Wednesday 30 August 2017 The Carnarvon area was first settled in 1876 and the town named after Lord Carnarvon, the then British Secretary of State for the Colonies. Carnarvon is the main town in the Gascoyne. We take a look around this morning before heading to the Peron Peninsula for our overnight stay at Monkey Mia - a well-known reserve, famous for its local dolphins. En-route we stop at Hamelin Pool to see a colony of Stromatolites (fossil micro organisms) that date back to the beginning of life on earth. We enjoy lunch here whilst visiting the Telegraph Station. We pass through Denham, the most westerly town in Australia and the access point to Monkey Mia. The Shark Bay region we are about to visit was so named by explorer William Dampier in 1699. But he was not the first to discover this area. The first European landing took place in October 1616 when Dutch sea captain Dirk Hartog landed at Cape Inscription 152 years before Captain Cook set out on his much publicised voyage of discovery to the Pacific and Australia’s eastern shores. Today the area is recognised as one of the very special places on earth and is World Heritage listed. For more than 30 years now, three generations of Bottle Nosed Dolphins have been visiting the beautiful beach at Monkey Mia on the north eastern arm of the Peron Peninsula, to interact with their human visitors. The famous ‘dolphin beach’ is the ideal place to enjoy this most unusual activity. Of course the dolphins cannot be guaranteed but when they come into shore and mingle with National Park Rangers, it’s an attraction not to be missed. Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort (ph 1 800 653 611) Day 16 (BLD): MONKEY MIA TO GERALDTON: Thursday 31 August 2017 Before we leave the area we head to the famous dolphin beach in hope that they will visit this morning. We can learn more detail about them by visiting the Information Centre located on the beach front at Monkey Mia. Late morning we return to the highway and drive to our lunch venue at the Overlander Roadhouse. This afternoon we travel alongside the Kalbarri National Park and on into Geraldton. We have time to take a look at the local port area, St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and the HMAS Sydney Memorial. Ibis Styles Geraldton (ph 08 9921 2455) Day 17 (BD): GERALDTON TO PERTH: Friday 1 September 2017 Departing Geraldton we head south. As we travel through the Greenough region we will see river red gums which have given up defying the prevailing winds and bent themselves almost parallel to the earth! At Dongara we take the Midlands Highway through Three Springs and Coorow. We are here at a great time of the year to see Wildflowers at their best and Western Australia has the largest collection of wildflowers in the world. In Coomberdale we stop to visit the Western Wildflower Farm for an informative talk on how these unique, colourful Australian wildflowers are delicately harvested, expertly dried and exported. The old school building, now converted into the wildflower facility also houses local arts and crafts. After some lunch in Moora (own expense) we make our way into Perth. Rendezvous Hotel Perth (ph 08 9245 1000) Day 18 (BLD): EXPLORING PERTH: Saturday 2 September 2017 Following breakfast, a local guide joins us to introduce us to the charming city of Perth. The city features an unusual combination of skyscrapers and colonial architecture, including Parliament House, St Mary's Cathedral, Government House, Barrack Arch, the Old Mill, South Perth foreshore, London Court and the Perth Mint. Our morning break is at Kings Park where we have fantastic photo opportunities with spectacular views over the city and river. Late morning, we join Captain Cook Cruises for a cruise down the Swan River to Fremantle. On arrival in Fremantle our coach is there to meet us. We enjoy lunch before we look at the sights of this historic port town. After a great day, we return to Perth. Rendezvous Hotel Perth (ph 08 9245 1000) Day 19 (B): PERTH TO CANBERRA: Sunday 3 September 2017 Today we transfer to the airport where we farewell our touring coach and board our flight to Canberra (flight details to be advised). We arrive home later today having had a fantastic experience travelling from Darwin to Perth.
