FUNDING THE NEW TECHNOLOGY WAVE New technologies are constantly being developed in the oil and gas industry but how do designers go about receiving the funding they need to succeed?
That’s where Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF) comes onto the scene. Over the past few years, ITF has seen around eight technologies per year implemented into the market. Since beginning operations in 2000, the broker has invested around $95 million into Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) and is currently funding projects in excess of $25 million.
The company, based in the UK with an offi ce in Western Australia, provides a platform for industry players to articulate their technology needs while offering a trusting environment for collaboration with technology developers, who are assured of confi dentiality and ownership of any intellectual property they bring or develop during their projects.
Some of the technology projects completed through ITF include enhanced seismic imaging and modelling techniques, controlled source electro-magnetic (CSEM) techniques in shallow water, repairing damaged well casing and other technologies developed to enhance or meet changing legislation in oil-in-water monitoring techniques.
Funding is determined by ITF members who assess each proposal on a case-by-case basis. Through this ITF model, both the funding organisation and those offering the innovative solution are matched at an early stage, allowing an appropriate level of dialogue to take place.
During the Australian Industry Participation session at the AOG Conference, ITF Regional Manager Peter Brazier will discuss how this model works, taking technology from concept to commercialisation. He will also look at the company’s JIP in Perth with subsea and pipeline engineering and project management company Subsea Engineering Associates (SEA) Pty Ltd.
“We launched two JIPs in 2012 alone including the project with Subsea Engineering Associates (SEA) Pty Ltd that will explore and demonstrate a new approach to assessing pipeline span issues on the seabed subsea,” Mr Brazier said.
Hosted by the WA Department of Commerce and the Federal Government’s Department of Industry, and sponsored by Chevron, the Australian Industry Participation stream takes place on 19 February at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre.
AOG JOINS WITH GOVERNMENT TO SHOWCASE AUSTRALIAN OIL & GAS INDUSTRY SUPPLIERSAOG 2014 will host the Australian Industry Zone, a new exhibition area that will provide a platform for Australia’s oil and gas manufacturers and service companies to display their latest technology and services.
The new initiative is the result of a partnership with the Federal and Western Australian Governments to showcase the country’s oil and gas industry suppliers. It will herald the technological breakthroughs taking place in Australia’s oil and gas supply industry.
“Project developers and operators no longer have to look overseas to fi nd solutions for their technical challenges and productivity improvements,” Hon. Michael Mischin MLC said.
“Australia has a vibrant sector of small to medium-sized suppliers that are bringing
new ideas to market in response to industry needs.
“The Australian Industry Zone is one of the ways we are supporting these suppliers to showcase their capability and grow their business. It will allow project decision makers to interact with Australian fi rms in one convenient location on the main exhibition fl oor.”
The Australian Industry Zone is a new feature area showcasing 15 Australian oil and gas industry manufactures and suppliers.

AUSTRALIAN MARINE COMPLEX ON SHOW The capabilities and achievements of the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) will be on show at the 2014 Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition.
Located 23 kilometres south of Perth in Henderson, the AMC is recognised internationally as a centre of excellence for manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, technology and maintenance, servicing the oil and gas, mining, marine and defence sectors.
The WA State Government developed the AMC in 2003 to cluster complementary businesses and further enhance opportunities for local companies to compete for large-scale projects through much-needed industrial infrastructure.
Within the complex is the AMC Common User Facility (AMC-CUF) - a world-class, multi-purpose fabrication, assembly and load-out facility.
It offers more than $400 million worth of infrastructure available for use by local industry, providing them with the ability to diversify operations and compete for major
contracts without needing to expand their
own physical boundaries.
The AMC-CUF features:
• 50 hectares of sealed and serviced
laydown and assembly area
• A state-of-the-art fabrication hall
• Five load-out wharves, one fi tted with a
300-tonne crane;
• The world’s most technically advanced
fl oating dock; and
• A 512-wheeled self-propelled modular
transporter with a 4500 tonne capacity.
Over the past 10 years, the facility has
hosted 368 projects and generated $1.7
billion in economic activity in the state,
translating to 24,000 local jobs.
No doubt in the years to come, the AMC
and its vital infrastructure will continue to
be important economic contributors to local
industry and Western Australia as a whole.

TOP TO BOTTOM SOLUTIONS In 1985 an Aker Solutions engineer envisioned moving gas compression equipment from the topside to the bottom of the ocean. His innovative idea is now becoming a reality at a deep-water fi eld in the Norwegian Sea after more than 25 years of development.
The subsea gas compression solution will extend the life of the fi eld up to 15 years, producing an excess of 280 million barrels of oil equivalent to approximately $28 billion.
It produces pressure, allowing hydrocarbons to travel up the pipelines to a platform or receiving terminal onshore. By unlocking the remaining hydrocarbons into the reservoir, the technology can extend the life of gas fi elds by several years and increase the overall gas recovery.
The world’s fi rst system, the Åsgard subsea compression project, will become operational in 2015 and is one of the most complex subsea projects to date. It will be the fi rst of several other subsea gas compression developments around the world.
The technology is set to boost gas recovery by 10 to 15 percent or more dependent on the properties of the reservoir. In addition to increasing the quantity of gas extracted, the technology is less expensive than the equivalent offshore platform or fl oating unit, reducing production costs two-fold.
Aker Solutions Senior Sales Engineer for Emerging Subsea Technology Salvatore Micali will present the future of the systems at AOG 2014, during the Focus on Technology session. He will give an insight into the ongoing diversifi cation of the system to supply to different utilities such as onshore LNG and FLNG.
“In addition to the increased gas recovery, subsea gas compression provides signifi cant health, safety and environmental benefi ts, through low emissions, no disposals at sea and unmanned operations,” Mr Micali said.
“These advantages have been confi rmed in the success of the fi rst projects, and this, together with the growing investments in this fi eld, makes subsea gas compression systems more and more attractive for a wider range of applications.”
Further modifi cation and development aims to increase the depth capabilities to 3000m, a longer step-out distance and, eventually, compression for injection.
A model of the Åsgard subsea compression system will be on display at the Aker Solutions AOG exhibition stand, at a 1:20 scale. The size will resemble that of a small car.
The world’s fi rst system, the Åsgard subsea compression project, will become operational in 2015 and is one of the most complex subsea projects to date. REDESIGN IN THE
PIPELINE Designing subsea pipelines to avoid vibrations caused by slug and turbulence loading seems to be an impossible task, however, a joint industry project (JIP) launched in 2010 could hold the answer.
Slug fl ow in pipelines, jumpers and risers has the potential to induce signifi cant response amplitudes and can be a substantial contributor to damage accumulation over the life of a fi eld.
Particular consideration of slug fl ow and pipeline response is required in the cases of long pipeline spans, riser-base jumpers, risers and, in general, for compliant structures with intermittent supports.
Wood Group Kenny is working to overcome these issues by studying the mechanics of slug fl ow and response in pipelines with a view to reach industry consensus and develop guidelines.
Working with BP, the Bureau of Safety and Environment Enforcement (BSEE), Chevron, ExxonMobil, GE Oil and Gas, Petrobras, Technip and TOTAL, Wood Group Kenny has detailed comparisons and correlations between the results from physical tests conducted at Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio and numerical results from various software tools for a range of slug fl ow conditions, including high velocity cases.
“Phase one of the JIP considered a detailed interrogation of the load contributors and their effect of on-system response; it also included the application of methodologies to sample systems and a produced set of guidelines,” Wood Group Kenny Group Technology and Engineering Director Keiran Kavanagh said.
To date, the results have helped to improve the understanding of the extent to which slug fl ow contributes to pipe stress amplitudes and damage accumulation as well as contributing to the understanding of slug-structure interaction. Mr Kavanagh will present at the Slugfest – Slug Induced Vibrations in Subsea Pipelines, Spans and Jumpers stream on 19 February at the AOG Conference.

HUMAN CAPITAL TRENDSMany companies are still doing head count planning – building the workforce plan from the bottom up, which can result in greater numbers of people required with fewer of the capabilities necessary for future growth, according to Deloitte Consulting Partner, Julie Harrison.
Ms Harrison will be the keynote speaker for the Human Capital session on Thursday 20 February, presenting on the 2013/14 Human Capital trends.
“Many organisations end up missing great business opportunities because they don’t have the requisite skills when the market moves,” Ms Harrison said.
“This also usually requires these companies to pay more for the skills they need as the skills become more of a scarce resource.”
Her advice is to take a more strategic ‘top down’ view of workforce requirements through alignment of the workforce plan to the business strategy, which enables future capability requirements to be highlighted early and proactively sought in the market.
Ms Harrison’s presentation will focus on a number of contemporary global human capital trends such as:
• Leadership – what does the leader of the future look like and how the human resources function can support this
• Labour productivity – ensuring the workforce of the right size and enabling and delivering more effi ciently with the people that you have available
• The value of deliberating linking business strategy, organisation design and workforce planning
• The open talent economy – the use of both permanent and other labour sources and;
• The shift from ‘the war for talent’ to ‘the war to develop talent’ as a key retention opportunity for companies.
The presentation titled Human Capital Trends 2013: Resetting Horizons will also look at the considerations for the transformation of human resources to meet new and changing business priorities (from the backroom to the boardroom).
