181 Algorithm and System for Automatic Camshaft Testing T.C. Ionescu, S.M. Dascalu, pp 131-135

An original method for testing camshafts has been developed. It can be used for a large variety of engines and it has been im~emented by several Romanian engine manufacturers. l he testing algorithm is presented, with a discussion of its merits. The paper also contains an outline of the hardware system used in conjunction with the algorithm. It is worth mentioning that the practical results are more than encouraging from the point of view of accuracy and efficiency of testing.

182 Making Configuration Expert System Development Less Costly B.G. Welz, pp 137-142

In this paper the software environment KONTEST is introduced which allows a non-programmer to build and maintain a knowledge-based configuration tool for a restricted class of configuration tasks. The use of an environment like KONTEST can be especially interesting for small and medium-sized companies, that could not afford a customised configuration tool developed from scratch.

184 A Low-Cost Petri-Nets Based Simulator for Small Sized Manufacturing Systems A.M. Stanescu, S.I. Bradatan, R. Patras, S. Cosmescu, G. Cosmescu, pp 149-153

The paper deals with a new approach for the integration of a Petri-net-based simulator within a three-level hierarchical software system to design the low-cost computer-aided planning of flexible manufacturing systems. This unconventional method is compared with the SIMAN language-based method. The basic simulation procedure is presented as a two-player events/actions Petri-net modelling game.

185 A Low Cost Measuring Cell for CIM Environment P.H. Osanna, N.M. Durakbasa, R. Oberl~inder, pp 155-159

The application of CAD, CAE and CAM puts new demands on inspection and testing in computer integrated production processes. A sophisticated measurement technique, among other things, is considered crucial to the production of industrial goods of a controlled and optimized quality. The basic definitions governing design, production and quality control of workpieces have also undergone considerable advances, with the goal of intemational harmonization and standardization. Focal points of interest include the definitions of nominal, real and substitute geometrical features. Planes, spheres and cylinders are examples where the methods' divergence, depending of the point of view - design, production or measurement - still causes trouble in industry.

183 Simulation In Small and Medium Sized Companies G. Kronrelf, P. Kopacek, pp 143-147

Modem production plants are characterized by enhanced complexity, with respect to increased automation and greater integration of computers. Therefore, the duration and risks of planning are increasing. In addition, putting new or modified plants into operation bring about considerable complications with start-up operation, as well as production rate decreases. The main source of this behaviour is often the insufficient tuning of the single devices. The aim of this paper is to give stimulus to the use of simulation, which has been well known for a considerable time as a planning tool. However, it is being used too seldom in finding solution to the problems mentioned above.

186 A Modular "Low Cost" CAQ System* M. Zauner, J. H61zl, P. Kopacek, pp 161-166

Quality demands under the pressure of international competition, with respect to the standards ISO 9000 to ISO 9004, can be satisfied by small and medium-sized enterprises only by the use of very specific solutions. The described and self-developed CAQ system consists of 20 modules, integrated in an existing CIM concept. The CAQ system was considered at the creation time of the existing CIM system. Therefore a relational CIM database, in addition to the PPS database, is connected to the CAQ data base. The modular software is arranged in layers and supports the client/server principle. A network (Ethemet) with MS-DOS PCs and Unix Workstations comprises the main hardware components.
