After more than 20 years of pursuing student excellence in business and law, the Ateneo Lex is proud to announce the introduction of business ethics as a core competency of the organization. The encouragement of ethical business practices is now a key part of the identity, drive, and thrust of Ateneo Lex. Ateneo Lex believes that it is important to develop students—as future leaders in business—who take an active concern in ethical considerations. The pursuit of ethical business standards as a norm rather than as an outlying example is something that Ateneo Lex desires as an organization. In line with this, the Ateneo Lex brings you this year’s Business-Law Conference, entitled 180°, with the theme of Business Ethics and the main concerns that face businessmen in the field of ethical decision-making. A main goal of this conference is to discuss ethical business practices that may be applied in medium to large scale business enterprises, and to emphasize the importance of setting standards of ethics in your businesses as soon as possible. This conference is an avenue for Ateneo Lex to introduce an emphasis on ethical businesses for both its members and other partner organizations.

For the last two years, the Ateneo Lex has been proud to host the Business-Law Conference, an annual gathering of students and student-leaders with the goal of discussing and introducing key issues and concepts in business and law. The first annual Business-Law Conference, ONE, was held in 2011, and was so successful it allowed for the second Business-Law Conference, entitled SYNERGY, to be held the following year. Both conferences covered topics in Personal Finance, Social Entrepreneurship, and Business Leadership. Last year’s BLC was notable for the participation of several renowned speakers and the introduction of several ideas new to the business environment. First, Cebuano economist and lecturer Mr. Thads Bentulan shared his Hyperwage Theory, which generated great interest in the participants for the reformation of the wage system of the country. The honourable Mayor Herbert Bautista of Quezon City shared the steps his administration has taken to promote a stable and sustainable business environment within the city. Lastly, Mr. Brian Quebengco of De La Salle University shared his insights in leadership within the business environment, a last call to the participants to take up the helm in their own environments. The 2013 National Business-Law Conference is set to match all these past events with a desire to push the participants to become leaders in business and law. Ateneo Lex believes that ethical business practices form a critical part of the practice of business, and are particularly relevant to today’s society and business environment.

BLC?WHAT IS

At the Business-Law Conference, participants will get the chance to learn from some of the best and brightest minds that our country has to offer. Experts in business will share their insights in practical applications of ethical decision-making in the industry. Renowned lecturers from within the academe will impart their hard-earned knowledge into the participants, particularly with regard to the basic principles of ethical businesses. Group Discussion Sessions will allow the participants to apply the principles and examples discussed in the lecture sessions to a hypothetical case where the participants are challenged to resolve a situation with certain ethical considerations. This allows the participants to have a grasp of ethical decision making and provides an avenue for them to participate in applying the insights they have grasped in order to allow the immediate application of these important principles. In order to grasp the concept of social entrepreneurship, BLC 2013 plans to take its participants on a tour of a company which has exhibited great dedication to the pursuit of ethical business practices, and the spirit of

socially dynamic activities. This activity will also be supplemented by people from within the company who will give their own short seminars to orient the participants towards what the company itself is doing to create an environment for social entrepreneurship to flourish. Of course, the BLC isn’t all seminars and group discussions. A main goal of the conference is to bring together people from different places, different situations, and different walks of life into a single place to build connections, partnerships, and friendships between not only schools or institutions, but students as well. The BLC Socials Night will be the event to do just that. Outside of the formal learning in the seminars and sessions, the Socials Night allows the participants to interact on a much more informal setting, with good food, entertainment, and loads of fun in the mix. The Socials Night is sure to build lasting relationships that can only contribute to the development of the participants as a whole.
