February 23, 2020 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings. We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19). This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48).

NECEDAD

A veces la noción del arrepentimiento parece anticuada, ingenua y hasta necia. Pero si buscas locura, la encontrarás en las lecturas de hoy. Comencemos con Levítico y la amonestación “no te vengues ni guardes rencor” (Levítico 19:18). Por supuesto que hemos escuchado este mensaje antes, y por eso puede que olvidemos lo alejado que está de las “realidades prácticas de la vida”, contra las que nos advierte san Pablo. Será mejor que quien se considere sabio “se haga ignorante”, porque “la sabiduría de este mundo es ignorancia ante Dios” (1 Corintios 3:18, 19). Esta “locura” continúa en el Evangelio: “No hagan resistencia al hombre malo” (Mateo 5:39). De hecho, presenta la otra mejilla, si has sido golpeado. Dale tu abrigo al que te pide la camisa. Sé como Dios que manda el sol y la lluvia sobre justos e injustos. “Sean perfectos”, dice Jesús, “como su Padre celestial es perfecto” (5:48).

Llegó Cuaresma. Queridos feligreses y peregrinos del Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Des Plaines. Para los cristianos la fiesta mas importante es la celebración de la Pascua de Resurrección de Jesucristo. Aunque en los primeros siglos se celebrara de una forma mas espontánea, es para el siglo IV cuando ya encontramos esta fiesta con toda la solemnidad litúrgica anual que conocemos hoy día. Lo que sí es claro es que desde sus comienzos, los miembros de la Iglesia sintieron la necesidad de preparar esa fiesta con oración y ayuno durante algún tiempo y se le denominó tiempo de cuaresma. Junto a la oración y el ayuno, se inicia la organización de catequesis y momentos especiales de reconciliación y penitencia. Encontramos testimonios de que también se preparaban los candidatos nuevos para recibir el bautismo, los cuales pasaban en vigilia la noche del del Sábado e incluso se habla de un ayuno largo de hasta una semana. La Sagrada Escritura nos habla de la estadía de Jesús durante 40 días en el desierto haciendo oración y penitencia y ofreciendo al Padre un Ayuno muy riguroso. Durante ese tiempo, Jesús fue sometido a las tentaciones y mostró su autoridad sobre el tentador como preparación para su vida pública. Las respuestas de Jesús a las tentaciones de usar su poder para, convertir piedras en pan, tirarse desde el alero del templo de Jerusalén, adorar a satanás a cambio del poder sobre los reinos de la tierra, fueron: ‘No solo de pan vive el hombre sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios’’, ‘’No tentaras al Señor tu Dios’’, ‘’Al Señor tu Dios adorarás y solo a El darás culto’’ y estas respuestas alejaron de él a satanás y sus pretensiones. (Pueden leer el capitulo 4 del evangelio de San Marcos). Esa experiencia de las tentaciones de Jesús, nos inspira para vivir nuestra cuaresma como un tiempo privilegiado para reflexionar, reorientar nuestra vida y adentrarnos a vivir con los sentimientos de Jesucristo. Este Miércoles 26 de febrero iniciaremos la cuaresma con la inspiradora celebración de Miércoles de ceniza. Las palabras “conviértete y cree en el Evangelio” ó “Acuérdate que eres polvo y al polvo vas a volver” nos ponen frente a nuestra frágil naturaleza humana y la transformadora gracia de Dios para el creyente. Ayuno, vigilia, abstinencia, penitencia, reconciliación, mortificación y limosna son acciones propias de estos cuarenta días.

Dear parishioners and pilgrims of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines.

For Christians, the most important feast is the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Although in the first centuries it was celebrated in a more spontaneous way, it is by the 4th centu-ry that we already found this festivity with all the annual liturgical solemnity that we know today.

What is clear is that, from the beginning, the Church members felt the need to prepare this feast with a time of prayer and fasting and it was called time of Lent. Along with prayer and fasting, the disposition for catechesis and special moments of reconciliation and penance begin. We found testimonies that new candidates were also preparing for baptism, who spent vigils on Saturday night and even talked about a long fast of up to a week.

Sacred Scripture tells us about Jesus' 40-day stay in the wilderness praying and doing penance and offering to the Father a very rigorous Fast. During this time, Jesus was subjected to temptations and showed his authority over the tempter in preparation for his public life. Jesus' response to the temptations to use his power; turning stones into bread, throwing Himself from the eaves of the temple of Jerusalem, worshipping Satan in exchange for power over the kingdoms of the earth was: “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God”, “You shall not put the Lord, your god, to the test”, ''The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve'' and these answers drove satan away from him. (You can read chapter 4 of the gospel of St. Matthew).

This experience of Jesus' temptations inspires us to live our Lent as a privileged time to reflect, reorient our lives, and to enter life with the feelings of Jesus Christ.

This Wednesday, February 26th, we will begin Lent with the inspiring celebration of Ash Wednesday. The words "repent and believe in the Gospel" and "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return" put us before our fragile human nature and the transformative grace of God to the believer.

Fasting, vigil, abstinence, penance, reconciliation, mortification and alms are proper actions of these forty days.
