LOCAL FARMER ALLEN BOYLES has directed a $2,500 donation to the Q.A. County 4-H.

Funded by America’s Farmers Grow Communities, the donation will help the group develop its Maryland Rural and Agriculture Safety Curriculum and workshop program. It is partnering with educators in Delaware and Maryland to expand and adapt the 24-hour tractor certification that youth ages 14 to 16 are required to pass to be employed in agriculture. This program will be available to all rural families to better prepare them for a farm-related emergency.

Thanks to the support of farmers across the country, more than $3.2 million is being directed to nonprofits in 1,289 counties in 39 states.

“I was a 4-H’er when I was younger,” said Boyles. “The 4-H is there for the farmer, that’s what 4-H is all about, and that’s why they’re so deserving of this donation.”

America’s Farmers Grow Communities works directly with farmers to support nonprofit organizations like the Queen Anne’s County 4-H, who are doing important work in their communities. The program offers farmers the chance to win $2,500, which then is donated to the farmer’s nonprofit of choice.

The search for funding to sustain and enhance programs is a year-round job for nonprofit organizations across the country. Through America’s Farmers Grow Communities, farmers have been able to support a variety of groups, such as schools, fire departments, community centers and youth organizations like 4-H and FFA.

America’s Farmers Grow Communities launched in 2010 and has donated more than $13 million to more than 5,200 nonprofit organizations across the country. America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, is part of the America’s Farmers initiative, which highlights and celebrates the important contributions of farmers like Allen Boyles.

NEW VENUE FOR CAMP Exciting News! This summer we are going to pilot a new “camp series”. Our traditional summer

camp will have a new look! Instead of a week-long camp we will move to a day-series program which will be held on every Monday during the month of July. The new day camp series will be open to all youth between the ages of 8 and 12. Yes, you read that correctly – all youth!

We will open the series up to the community at large with the intent to expose more youth to the principles of 4-H positive youth development, and to potentially attract new members. Each Monday will have a focused theme and a series of classes will be developed around each of these areas: 1) STEM, 2) Livestock/Animals 3) Arts & Crafts, Woodworking & related projects, and 4) Environmental & Health Science. The specifics will be determined within the next few weeks and information will then be sent to 4-H members and leaders. In order to provide this important experience to the youth in Queen Anne’s county, we need a quality cadre of volunteers. And, we want you to be a part of that leadership corps. Adults are needed as well as older youth 4-Hers. Please contact Sally to let her know of your interest. Training will be provided in early June. We invite you to join us in this new venture! DELMARVA CHICKEN FESTIVAL

Please hold the dates of June 20 and 21. Our county 4-H unit has the rights to sell all of the bottled soda and water at the festival. It is a HUGE fundraiser for our program. ALL of the 4-H clubs are expected to participate. Clubs will need to send 4-H members and adults to help sell the drinks. There will be two

stationary locations and several “portable” locations. Young 4-Hers can help with handing out the drinks, whereas the older 4-Hers and adults can handle the money. When we did this event previously, we were under Pop-up tents. I would imagine it will be the same again. Hopefully, it won’t rain and have tornado warnings this time!! We will be making up a chart with all of the times to be covered and how many people are needed for each area. This information will be sent out as soon as we are informed.Remember, we need ALL of you to help! SPRING FASHION IS IN THE AIR If you are interested in working on a Fashion Revue Committee, please let Sally know. We need individuals to organize some relevant activities centered around our Fashion Revue. That could be hair, makeup, body image, sewing, etc. The sooner we get started, the better! SEAMSTRESSES NEEDED We are looking for adults and older teens that can help young 4-Hers with sewing. We can set up workshops at various locations or you can work from your home. If you can help or know of someone else who can help, please let Sally know. If there are 4-Hers out there who want help with specific sewing projects, please let us know. We will do our best to make it happen.

IMPORTANT NEW ANIMAL SCIENCE NEWS New regulations for youth exhibiting swine in 2014. Both breeding and market hogs will need to be tagged with an official USDA approved tag before a veterinarian can complete the CVI (certificate of Veterinary Health Paper). If you purchased a hog with an official Premise tag in its ear you have what you need. The Maryland Department of Agriculture is issuing 8 digit metal tags to veterinarians to use to put in swine ears prior to completing the CVI. I highly recommend that you do not use the metal tag as is. You can mount the metal tag on a blank plastic ear tag and then put the plastic tag in your pig’s ear. If you use the metal tag it will be prone to infection. If you have questions please call Chris Johnston 410 758-0166 or 410 708-0135. 2014 Animal Science Project Leaders/Volunteers Webinar Series The Maryland 4-H Animal Science Program is encouraging Animal Science Leaders and Volunteers to participate in the 2014 Animal Science Project Leaders/Volunteers Webinar Series which will be held each month, January through May, 2014. This program is offered to help youth who participate in 4-H animal projects in Maryland learn about the importance of caring for, grooming and showing their animals in safe and ethical ways. 4-H’ers are required to complete the on-line training program when they reach each 4-H age division (Juniors (ages 8-10), Intermediates (ages 11-13), Seniors (ages 14-18) – all as of January 1 of the current year) OR when as Intermediate and Senior 4-H members, they choose to show a new species since last completing the program within their age division. The on-line program gives youth the opportunity to fulfill the Animal Husbandry and Quality Assurance training requirement via internet from their home, school or local library. The AH&QA program has voice narration, so the material is shared in both written and oral form. Members will be asked to respond to questions to evaluate knowledge at different points during the program. There are two Levels to the program: one level is for Junior members and a second level is for Intermediate and Senior members. Members will be automatically taken to the appropriate Level according to the birthdate entered on the registration screen The program takes about 45-75 minutes to complete, depending on which level is being completed. When members register for the program, they will be provided a unique Passcode. Members should write their Passcode down and keep it in a safe place! A member must be LOGGED IN with their passcode for the system to track their progress and record their completion of the program. If a member needs to stop the AH&QA training in the middle of the program, he or she may return to the program where they left off by entering their Passcode on Page 1 of the program. ALL members completing the program prior to 2013 (or any portion of the program) must register and a NEW PASSCODE will be assigned. Passcodes to members from 2013 and before are no longer valid.

Page 11: 18 HOLIDAY, OFFICE CLOSED 4-H LEADERS MEETING … 20 EASTER · A BIG THANK YOU…to Go Getters 4 -H Club for Michael’s Lee’s Diamond Clover Project to help construct a playground

For 2014, members will have access to the AH&QA program from March 15 through July 31st. Members MUST complete the AH&QA training no later than July 31st. Counties may establish a completion deadline earlier than July 31 to meet the needs of the local program. Members may go directly to the AH&QA program at https://webtools.moo.umd.edu/AHQA/ or a link to access the AH&QA program will be posted on the Animal Science Program Resources page of the Maryland 4-H website at http://extension.umd.edu/4-h/. Upon completion of the program, members will have an opportunity to print a Certificate of Completion for their records. It is suggested that members keep the Certificate of Completion with their animal health papers (CVI forms, etc.), registration papers, and other animal records. Each member’s progress will be kept in a statewide database and their County 4-H staff will receive notification that they have completed the AH&QA training. IMPORTANT SWINE INFORMATION Due to the PED Virus outbreak, Maryland 4-H has made the decision to eliminate all co-mingling of pigs at county weigh-ins. We will not weigh market hogs this year (at tagging – will still weigh for shows) which in turn will eliminate any rate of gain requirements for exhibiting at State Fair. We still are requiring that 4-H market hogs be tagged prior to or within a week after the June 1st ownership deadline. At this point, we are not eliminating any shows. If you have a market or breeding swine project this year you MUST CONTACT Chris Johnston by May 1st. We will send detailed information concerning our new biosecurity policies and our project identification process only to those that contact me by May 1st. You do not have to physically have your pigs by May 1st but you need to let me know that you will be getting them by June 1st for market or July 1st for Breeding stock.
