Orientation Meeting for Nursery Ministers
Nursery Coordinator, Jill Ergenbright is offering discipleship opportunities. Anyone in our parish who is interested in serving in our nursery, please attend the orientation meeting scheduled for Sun-day, July 27th from 10:15 – 11:15 AM. Nursery ministers provide childcare for children ages 1 year to 4 years on Sundays during the 9:00 AM Mass and will be scheduled to serve about every eight to ten weeks. Adults serving as Nursery Ministers will be required to complete Protecting God’s Children Training and a background check. This particular ministry is a great way for youth, 5th grade or older, to become introduced to serving and living as a disciple.

School Supply Drive The Social Action Commission is collecting supplies for the Newton Community preschool, the elementary schools, and the middle school. Many students come to class in need of supplies and other materials. Teachers often have to spend their own money to buy these additional items for their students. Charter Bus Pilgrimage "Northeast Iowa Treasures"
Monday, August 11, 2014 Depart at 6:15 a.m. & Return at 9:15 p.m.
Looking forward to having the Sacred Heart Church members and friends join us on a discovery of "Northeast Iowa Treasures" by boarding the Hawkeye Stages motor coach on the morning of August 11th for a fun filled day of exploring! After a morning break a visit to the Trappist Caskets located by Peosta and upon arrival a tour as well as a power point presentation of the his-tory of making urns and caskets by the Trappists will be shown. Lunch will be served in East Dubuque at Timmerman's Supper Club overlooking the Mississippi River. Our next attraction will be the Dickeyville Grotto which is located just over the border in Wisconsin. This is a creation
in stone, mortar and bright colored objects which were collected all over the world to be displayed at this grotto. Another form of a true craftsman will be dis-played at the Becker Woodcarving Museum in Dyersville. The museum displays the largest carved clock in Iowa, chains, decoys, toys and as well as the 12 Apos-tles. Board the coach to Petersburg to visit the Saint Peter & Paul Church where a mass will be celebrated by Father Reynolds. On to Barn Happy located in Ce-dar Falls for an evening meal.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
In today’s second reading, Saint Paul bids us to take comfort in knowing that when God invites us to pray to him, he knows our true needs, even if we do not. The Holy Spirit intercedes and prays for us even if we can’t come up with appropriate words; even when we don’t have a clue what to ask for. We are not left alone. Good stewards know that prayer is an important part of living a life in Christ. The im-portant thing is to make space for God. Do we let God into our hearts? Do we make room for the Holy Spirit to pray within us?

In The Catholic Messenger this week (July 17): Diocesan and other service-oriented groups are planning strategy to help some of the un-
accompanied Central American children flooding across the U.S. border with Mexico.
Collaboration between parishes remains a priority for Bishop Martin Amos and he praised ef-forts he heard about during the July 12 Diocesan Pastoral Council meeting.
Fourteen men – 12 discerning a call to the permanent diaconate and two seminarians discerning a call to
priesthood --were accepted into candidacy for the Davenport Diocese. St. Ambrose University’s rezoning request for a proposed sports complex received approval from the Dav-
enport City Council. But the potential for a mayoral veto exists. Re-dedication of Sister Concetta Park in Davenport recognized 40 years of Project Renewal’s dedication to
offering a safe place for children to do study, play and learn. Louisiana’s Supreme Court has ruled that a priest may be compelled to testify as to what he heard in the
confessional in 2008 concerning an abuse case. Catholic leaders in the Holy Land called for an end to the cycle of violence and criticized Israel’s occupation
of Palestinian territories and its collective punishment of Palestinians. Dan Ebener begins the first of a three-part series on life, culture and religion in Croatia, where he has taught
each spring for the past six years. Sacred Heart Cathedral’s resident sheltie shares “her” column, “Maggie Sue’s Dogmatic Theology,” answer-

How much should we give to our parish?
My family has been struggling with the issue of tithing. Does the Bible mention this somewhere? Should it be a percent-
age of my net or gross income?
The word tithe means “10 percent.” The Bible, especially the Old Testament, is filled with references to tith-ing, mostly as a way to help the poor. Deuter-onomy 14:22 says, “Each year you shall tithe all the produce of your seed that grows in the field.” In today’s terms, that’s 10 percent of your gross annual income.
Tithing is only one part of stewardship, which means taking good care of something that’s been entrusted to you. In the Church, stewardship means giving our time and talent as well as our treasure. But you asked about tithing, so that’s what I’ll focus on here.
Writing a check is only one way to give your treas-ure. If you truly cannot give 10 percent of your income, try to raise the difference from other sources, whether as a member of the parish fundraising committee or on your own. For example, if you have a talent like cooking, crafting, or carpentry, create and sell a product specifically to raise money for the parish. If you have a skill the parish needs and would have to pay for, perform that service for free. Offer the service free to others in exchange for a donation to the parish in your name.
Apply some creativity to the situation, and you may even find a way to raise more for the parish than you would have just by writing a check.

When our children were small, my husband would periodically clean out my car. I always found his method interesting: Into a bag would go receipts, empty juice boxes, stray books, mittens, pens, loose change, and anything that would get in the way of vacuuming the floor.
He made no distinction, collecting even things that were obviously trash and could be thrown out. Then he’d bring me the bag to sort through. I used to laugh at him: “Really, you kept the empty soda can?”
I’ve come to realize that his method of cleaning echoes today’s parable. Young shoots, whether wheat or weeds, look very much alike. What if, in our zeal to toss out weeds, we toss out wheat as well? Jesus tells us it’s
better to wait until the end, when they look more like their true selves, and deal with them then.
Perhaps there’s some final use for the juice box or the soda can before we throw it away. I find this a remarkably hopeful attitude. While we would always end up throwing out a lot, we occasionally un-covered treasures that would have been lost forever.
Maybe building the kingdom of heaven is also like cleaning out a car.
Whether field or car, I’d like to think that God watches over what he plants and carefully looks for new strains of wheat among the tried and true stalks.
And in his mercy, God carefully examines all before he lets go of the weeds altogether.
