Comments from Deacon Dale Brown Mass Intentions For The Week

There is something strange in today’s Gospel passage. The reaction of the throngs who came out to hear St John the Baptist preach is electric. They were “filled with expectation.” They were so impressed by the presence and words of John the Baptist that they actually thought he was the promised Messiah, the Savior. But when we look at what John actually taught them, doesn’t that reaction seem overblown? His lesson is nothing new. He tells the crowds to share their food and clothing with the poor, to be honest in their business dealings, and hard working in their jobs. He merely applies the Ten Commandments to the particular situations of his listeners. He reminds them of the value of justice and humility: we are not to take undue advantage of anyone, and we are to help those in need. Does this simple, basic moral teaching really merit such a wild reaction? Yes, it does, when it is given by someone who is actually living it out, someone like St John the Baptist. Just think for moment how different the world would be if everyone followed these simple directives. And think how open our souls would be to God’s grace if we would combat our selfish tendencies in these apparently trivial ways. John is announcing the coming of the Savior, the Messiah, the Lord of life and history. And he is telling the people how they can enter into a personal relationship with that Savior; how they can come to experience what St. Paul calls in today’s Second Reading “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.” The path is paved with basic morality, but the destination is wisdom, joy, and eternal life, and that truly is something to get excited about. John’s hearers weren’t overreacting, but we may be under-reacting!

Christmas Flowers for the Church

Donations for Christmas flowers in honor of or in memory of your loved ones may be made by using the Flower Donation envelope included in your offertory packet. Additional envelopes will be available in the Parish Office or Narthex. Donations in any amount are welcome. Thank you for your assistance in helping decorate our sacred space for our Christmas liturgies.

IRA Contribution Possibilities Individuals age 70 ½ and over may make a donation direct from their Traditional IRA direct to St. Mary’s without that money being included in their adjusted gross income. While this can be a benefit to all taxpayers, the direct donation can be especially useful for those that don’t itemize deductions, and for those that are forced to take a Required Minimum Distribution. In order for you to get this tax break, the check must go directly from your IRA trustee to the church.

Contact Calli at the Parish Office or your tax advisor for more information.

A holiday donation can make a world

of difference!

With the end of the year quickly approaching, gifts of securities to the church may be an attractive giving method. If you own securities that are worth more than you paid for them, you may receive an income tax deduction for the full current market value of the stocks donated. In addition, you may bypass capital gains taxes that would otherwise be due. It is simple to make a transfer and we can easily provide you electronic transfer account information. The church encourages donors to consult with their tax advisor when considering these types of gifts.
