What is translation?

Is it just being able to write the corresponding term in another language for each word you have written?Really not!

Translation basically requires the interpretation of a text to be translated, the source text; but it mainly entails the interpretation of its meaning and the production of an equivalent text in another language, the target language. So it is not just a question of equivalent words, but equivalent meaning to make sure that you are making yourself understood.

You can expect your text in French to contain roughly 15-25% more words. In technical documentation, it is usually less.

Page 7: 160915_Suzanne Aubertin Traduction Inc Presentation - Eng

What does a good translator need?

In order to communicate the same message, a good translator minimally has to understand: • The culture of both languages, not just their vocabulary, • Current buzz words, what is trendy,• The specific grammar, syntactic and punctuation rules

of each language, and• The cultural references of your message.

This is a tall order that no machine translation as yet such as Google Translation can really fulfill.

Text Revision

Revision, as mentioned, is mostly done within the scope of a whole project.

PLEASE DO NOTExpect to save money by Googling a translation draft and asking for

that text to be revised by a professional service. You will not save!

Why? Because, of course, we will ask for the source document to compare the result

with. When we do a first read of the translation, we will at first try to understand what the meaning is, without the source document, and bring the appropriate corrections. Then we will compare with the source text, and we will look for the best way to express what you wanted to say in the first place. It will take just as long, sometimes even longer to go through this whole process as it would have to translate it directly.

Furthermore, the result will inevitably be influenced by the substandard text you have submitted in the first place, since we automatically believe that this might have been your first choice, so we will only change it where it is really wrong, either in terms of terminology, or grammatically, or syntactically.

Revision is charged by the hour – like I said, you will not save!

Help with writing

Resume translation is one of our specialty. More often than not, they are those of professionals who have consulted head hunting firms, and want to present a specific type of resume in response to a particular opening they have seen or have been made aware of. I often help people with this. It is in fact something I have been doing ever since the beginning of the company in 1985. I can translate resumes, and help you write the letters, both in French and in English.I do not formulate complete resumes anymore, but I make suggestions.

I also help with business and personal letters.

Page 14: 160915_Suzanne Aubertin Traduction Inc Presentation - Eng

What is Suzanne Aubertin Traduction Inc. not offering?

Translation of legal documents. This said, everyday documentation such as warranties, basic sales

contracts and conditions, disclaimers, etc. can be translated at the regular price, provided you accept that the translation will be sent with the following notice (disclaimer):

NOTICE:As we are not a firm specializing in the legal field, although this document has been thoroughly researched and translated, and reflects the professionalism acquired through our many years of experience in translation, we strongly recommend that this document be revised by a member of your legal department or other member of the legal profession. We will not be held responsible for anything being the result of the interpretation and/or application of the present translation, either as a whole or in part. Please consider this notice, that we send to all of our customers requesting translations of documents having legal implications, as a protective measure for both of our companies .

Why I never offer translations of official (legal)documents? Official documents: certificates, report cards, birth or marriage certificates, etc. People who need them usually also need to have them stamped with a legal seal certifying that the translation is true to the original, and this seal can only be obtained from a member of the legal profession such as a notary, a justice of the peace, etc. If a translator is a certified legal translator, then he or she has access to such a seal. S.A.T. does not have one.

Present & Future

We continue working with our many satisfied customers on a weekly, monthly basis, or on occasion. One of our excellent older customers was Symbol Technologies (some 20 years ago) which has since been bought by Motorola for which we also have worked for, which in turn was bought by Zebra Technologies, and its more recent Canadian division is called Blue Star.We have just started collaborating once again, this on the basis of S.A.T. still having solid credentials with in-house members of sales and management.

Page 21: 160915_Suzanne Aubertin Traduction Inc Presentation - Eng

Present & Future - continued

A similar situation happened with the Montreal established real estate developers Crofton Moore, with whom we have started to work again on a more regular basis after a 4 year hiatus.

Discussions were started recently with Cogeco and we finished a first contract with them with the hope of a continued collaboration.

We are now working regularly with Serene Accounting, a cloud based accounting firm, a forward looking technology applied to a traditional profession. Access2Pro, another one of our customers, offers a similar principle to the construction\renovation sector.

We have just finished working with UBM on the official documentation for The Advanced Design & Manufacturing Expo (formerly the PackEX & PlastEX) which will be held at the Palais des Congrès in Montreal on November 30 and December 1rst, 2016.

Present & Future – With You

A few of you within this group have already tested the waters, such as A. Gardner & Associates and Buzzprint.

Others, I am sure, could need to have their documentation and website translated into French, québécois French, or from French to English, in a professional manner, in a way

that gets you understood.

You work hard to get your company rolling, and your corporate image is the essence of

what you present on the market.

Page 23: 160915_Suzanne Aubertin Traduction Inc Presentation - Eng

Let’s work together

Anyone in this group who has talked with me, or heard me present my services, knows: I am really really not a fan of ‘machine

translation’. This is because the very term is a fallacy.Machines stock information and apply it as best they can in similar

contexts, but it rarely works well.

What we, us translators as myself, use on occasion is a translation memory software such as the most popular one called Trados, and

still, I do so very rarely.

Translation at Suzanne Aubertin Traduction inc. is still mostly done in an artisan fashion using technological research tools. Only experience can allow this. As a result, your translations will not contain unbelievable errors and will not be a cookie cutter repetition

of what you can find on your competitor’s website.

Page 24: 160915_Suzanne Aubertin Traduction Inc Presentation - Eng

Talking about unbelievable errors!

Safety signage – Precision is crucial(Image taken from the ChinaGreen.com website)This story is NOT about that company

A university professor talked about a past experience having to translate the 3 little words “Use no oil” meaning “Use no oil based product”, such as often seen on oxygen tanks. Since in French it was too long to write “Ne pas utiliser de produit pétrolier”, the company required having a strict word for word translation. The translator presented a disclaimer to the customer to sign in case anything ever happened. Eventually, a garage worker used an oxygen torch… there was one fatality and only the foundation of the garage remained.

It is also said that there are grave risks every year when emergency response team members on ski slopes wear petroleum-based lip balm while using oxygen tanks…

Retranslation with inconsistencies: 1. Soak from the day until the

2. The rinsing and drain ??? (That word doesn't exist in French. They didn't take any chances, they didn't put a period at the end of the sentence.)

3. If reutilizing soaking some water or adding fresh, there must be like it the much of water like the peas.

4. Boil like mad (really?!), uncovered, for ten minutes. The roof, reduce the heat and simmer for 1-2 hours until tender.
