One of these masterpieces is the millennial bell tower, still in operation, built next to the Romanic church of San Celso. Its long story starts in 374 AD, when Saint Ambrose (the beloved patron saint of the Milanese) was the city’s archbishop. By religious choice, he built four basilicas beyond the Roman walls, in what was then open countryside. Three of them, Sant’Ambrogio, San Nazaro and San Simpliciano, are still actively used today, and are lo- cated inside the current city centre. Ambrose chose to place these basilicas where, at the beginning of the 4 th century, the bodies of martyrs bar- barously killed during the Christian persecutions had been buried in holes dug in the ground. This practice was meant to avoid triggering religious fanaticism: the laws of the time did not allow to mark with gravestones the burials of those who refused to worship the pagan gods. As a consequence, their bodies had to be buried in the fields and left unmarked. All this came to an end after 313 AD, when the Edict of Milan by Constantine gave Christians freedom of wor- ship. Since that date, digging beyond the walls, people would occasionally find human remains, often with sealed boxes next to them, containing notes on the names of the victims and the tortures they had suffered. According to biographers of the time, Saint Ambrose, who allegedly had a diviner’s gift, found some of those bodies using his bishop’s crosier, had them exhumed and then properly buried inside worthier basilicas. Of the several witnesses who related these extraordi- nary events, biographer Paolino came up with a pretty accurate description. He tells us how on May 10 th , 396, Ambrose was medi- tating in an orchard along the Via Emilia, when he had one of his extrasensory perceptions: he sensed that two martyrs were buried right there. The excavation that followed brought to light one re- markably well-preserved body, with traces of coagu- lated blood. On its decapitated head, traces of facial hair were still visible. Of the second body, only bones were left. Thanks to the notes found next to the remains, we have some information on their lives and also their names: they were Nazaro, a senior preacher, and Celsus, a young follower, about 18 years old. According to Christian beliefs, the good preservation of a body is a sign of sanctity, so the exulting population organized a procession to place Nazaro’s body in the nearby basilica Apostolorum (the current San Nazaro in Corso di Porta Romana). As for young Celso’s bones, Ambrose decided to place them in a beautiful white marble sarcophagus deco- rated on three sides, then he planned to enclose the or- chard, and at the exhumation site he placed a taberna- cle with a fresco of the Virgin and Baby Jesus (which is thought to be the first Madonna ever painted in Milan, and one of the first of the whole Christian world). Finally, Ambrose decided to build a small church nearby dedicated to San Celso. Unfortunately, there are only traces left of epigraphs and sarcophagi belonging to this building, since on the 600 th anniversary of the event, in the Romanic period, Archbishop Landolfo demolished the small rundown church, and built a basilica with a 30-metres-high bell tower and a monastery to accommodate the Benedictine monks. The tabernacle with the sacred images, always considered miraculous and object of great veneration, was left outdoors. Only in 1430, in order to protect the painting, a small church for only 300 people was built and inserted as a transept into the Basilica of San Celso. As was common in those times, the image was placed on the major altar and covered with a curtain that could be removed only on solemn occasions. All this changed radically after 30 th December 1485, due to a miracle that occurred while a nasty plague was rag- ing in the city. There are many sworn depositions by the Milanese who testified how, while they were in San Celso for the 11 o’clock Mass, celebrated by the priest Giovanni Pietro Porro, during Communion they saw the veil protecting the image move away, and the Virgin Mary appeared to show them the Son of God. From that day the plague began to recede. The grateful Milanese decided to demolish the small transept in 1489 and on San Celso’s left side they built the current great sanctuary dedicated to Santa Maria dei Miracoli (Saint Mary of Miracles) in order to keep the venerated image inside a prestigious temple. The construction, in 1493, was entrusted to some of the greatest Renaissance architects, such as Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono, Cristo- foro Solari, Galeazzo Alessi, and perhaps supported by Florence-born Donato Bramante who was in Milan in those years. Although completed in 1506, the temple was consid- ered too small; two side naves were then added, un- der the direction of Cesare Cesariano, who finally com- pleted the sanctuary in 1528. Soon to become one of the most important city’s monuments from an artistic, historical and religious point of view, the temple ended up overwhelming the old Romanic church nearby, which was left unused. In the nineteenth century, it was even decided to knock down four of San Celso’s bays to open three windows into the new building. The Romanic facade was then demolished and rebuilt in front of the last two bays at the bottom of the current small garden. In the 1900s the entire monastery was razed to the ground. Now, after 1600 years, the Milanese wish to commemo- rate those holy places and reopen the restored Medieval remains to the public. Two guided tours are currently available, on Sunday 8 th at 17.00 and on Sunday 15 th at 16.00. €22. The visit includes the sanctuary, where the Virgin’s fresco is visible at the left of the main altar; the nearby garden, with the church of San Celso and its ancient tower, with the bell still striking after 1000 years. The more adventurous could climb the 170 steps lead- ing to the top, admire the city from above, and take 360° selfies. • Lombardy lakesLago di Como The famous lakeside city is just an hour from Milan by train, and so it is an attractive pos-sibility for a day’s ex-cursion. The service “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazione Nord station, in Piazza Cadorna, to Como Lago, a station positioned right on the lakeside www.lenord.it. From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake, and a bus to Bellagio of-fers a cheap and picturesque alternative to boat transport. Info from the Como tourist office, tel. 031.3300.128, www.lakecomo.com, [email protected]. Ferry info www.navigazi-onelaghi.it

Lago MaggioreIt is the second largest lake in It-aly, extended for about 65 kilome-tres (40 miles). The climate is mild both in sum-mer and winter, producing Medi-terranean vege-tation, with many gardens growing

rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazi-one Stazione Centrale or Stazione Porta Garibaldi to Stresa www.lenord.it. From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake. http://http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/index.asp

• Driving, parkingWhenever you leave your car unattended, make sure that there are no bags, cameras, wallets etc. in sight inside. To enter the city centre (the area within the socalled “Cerchia dei Bastioni”, a circular area which, to give you an idea, starts from Porta Venezia on one side, Piazza XXIV Maggio on the other), you have to pay a tariff in the Area C system, about €5 per entrance. The Area C system operates Mon-Fri, 7.30-19.30. For further information, click on the Area C banner on the website www.comune.milano.it. Petrol stations in the city close for lunch, Saturday after-noons and Sunday. There are a few self-service pumps in the city. Motorway service stations are open 24 hrs a day. To park in the streetside areas marked by blue lines, you need to buy a SostaMilano card, on sale at the “ATM Point” in the Duomo metro station (open Mon-Sat 7.45-20.15), and in Cadorna, Centrale F.S., Loreto and Romolo metro stations, as well as in many bars and tobacconists. The cards are also sold directly by the attendants near the parking areas (they have uniforms and ID cards). You mark the start of stay on the card by scratching the year, month, day, and time. Various privately-run carparks also exist (blue P sign). If you are driving into Milan, you can use the multistorey car parks at the Metro stations Cascina Gobba, Famagosta, Bisceglie, Molino Dorino and Lampugnano, open 6.00-01.00, the cheapest parking in the city. Don’t leave your car in areas marked by the tow-away symbol, or in areas marked by yellow lines (areas reserved for residents). If your car should be clamped or towed away, you will have to contact the Polizia Locale (traffic wardens), whose offices are in Piazza Beccaria 19 (MM1/3 Duomo), tel. 02.02.08. Keep dipped headlights on during the daytime.

• European Emergency Tel. Number 112. In case of stolen goods or documents, you will need to con-tact the police station, Questura, in Via Fatebenefratelli 11 (M3 Turati), tel. 02.62.261.

• Guided toursPersonalized tours are offered by “A Friend in Milan” (see space last page) or www.friendinmilan.co.uk. “Autostradale” runs a three-hour coach tour every day ex-cept Mondays, starting at 9.30, in Piazza Duomo (in front of the Cathedral). It includes a visit to the Last Supper, and to the most important monuments. Cost €55 per person. Info at www.autostradale.it. “Zani Viaggi” runs a coach sightseeing. Info from their office in Foro Bonaparte 76, tel. 02.867.131, www.zaniviaggi.it. The “Centro Guide” provides official guides for tours for up to 25 people, in various languages. Tel. 02.8645.0433, or www.centroguidemilano.net. The “Associazione Castelli & Ville” runs excursions to castles and villas in Lombardy, with coach transport, lunch, and tour of the castle or villa (in Italian). Info tel. 02.6558.9231, 347.4830.009. www.castellieville.it

If you leave something in a taxi, you may have a chance of getting it back if you have the receipt for the taxi ride (which has the taxi’s ID on it) and the phone number of the radio-paging service. • Personal identityIt is a good idea to have your passport or ID card with you at all times, as you may be asked for it in the most surpris-ing of situations (using a library, Internet café, etc.)

• PostagePost offices are marked with a yellow “PT” sign. The central post office for letters, parcels etc. is in Via Cordusio 4, open Mon-Fri 8.00-19.00; Sat 8.30-12.00, Sun closed. The post office is for postal account payments, money changing etc. Most other post offices are open in the morning only, Mon-Fri 8.00-14.00, Sat 9.30-13.00. Stamps are also available at tobacconists (T sign). Italian first day covers and other philatelic products are sold at Via Cordusio 4. Post informa-tion, tel. 803160, Mon-Sat, 8.00-20.00, www.poste.it.

• Public transportATM. Runs metro, buses and trams. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsagents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some stations), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. ATM Infopoint are in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Lo-reto and Romolo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Met-ro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams. The magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey. The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first franking: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Metro system consists of 5 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), 5 (lilac) and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). Metro trains run from around 6.15 until 00.30, except on Saturday nights when trains run till about 02.00. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large interchange car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (M1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (M2), open 7.00-01.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fiera trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, toll-free info at 800.808181 (7.30-19.30), www.atm-mi.it. Radiobus service, operating from 20.00 to 02.00, is like a collective taxi service. A very comfortable air-conditioned minicoach picks you up and takes you where you want to go. You have to book by phone at 02.4803.4803, prefer-ably well in advance – say a few hours – or even just before your trip, but in this case you run the risk of not getting a place as well as spending ages listening to a recorded message. Cost €4 if you pay on the bus, less if you buy the ticket (ordinary ATM ticket + Radiobus ticket, total €3.50) in advance. This service may seem complicated, but it is so convenient and comfortable that it’s well worth the effort.

• RailwaysFS (Ferrovie dello Stato). Train information can be obtained from the information of-fice at the Central Station (Stazione Centrale), or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that open date train tickets should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, try the option to write date and time of your journey in a corner of the ticket, using a pen. If you booked a seat, on your ticket the date is already printed, so it is not necessery to franke it.For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes after departure. For the differently abled and people with sight problems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 199.30.30.60, operating every day, 7.00-21.00.

FNM (Ferrovie Nord) Is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. An info office is in the Cadorna sta-tion, open 7.00 to 20.00 every day. www.lenord.it Ferrovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to various locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Malpensa airport. See www.lenord.it

• Safety and securityIn Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro dur-ing the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the nor-mal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have nothing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financ-ing organized crime.

• TaxisIt is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line estimates at www.milanotaxi.it

• TelephonesThe 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). Num-bers starting 339, 347, 348 etc. are for mobile phones, these calls cost more. Numbers starting with 0 are for fixed phones, 1 for public utilities (police etc.), 3 for mobiles, 8 for toll-free numbers.

• Ticket infoTeatro alla Scala In Duomo metro station, open every day 12.00-18.00 (closed public holidays and August). Payment cash or by credit card. For information on availability, phone the Scala Infotel Service, tel. 02.7200.3744, from 9.00 to 18.00, eve-ry day. To buy tickets by phone – up to two weeks before the performance – tel. 02.860.775. This is a computerized system operating at all times, in English, Italian, German and French. Credit card number and tone-type telephone essential. On line: www.teatroallascala.org. Credit card only, 20% surcharge. Concerts Ricordi Mediastore, Via Ugo Foscolo 3 near Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (M1/3 Duomo), tel. 02 86.46.02.72Mondadori Multicenter, Piazza Duomo 1 (M1/3 Duomo), tel. 02.89.01.01.74.Mondadori Multicenter, Via Marghera 28 (M1 Wagner), tel. 02.48.04.71La Feltrinelli, Piazza Piemonte 2 (M1 Wagner), tel. 199.151.173.Touring, Corso Italia 19 (M3 Missori), tel. 02.85.26.304On line there may be a booking charge of about 10%.
