TODAY’S ROYAL NAVY

The Royal Navy of today and tomorrow will protect Britain’s interests, citizens, territory and trade by being ready to defeat our nation’s enemies with a deployable maritime force; one able to conduct decisive combat operations at sea, from the sea, on land and in the air alongside our sister services. With our allies and partners we will promote international maritime security and deter threats to our peace, prosperity and way of life.

THE SHIP

HMS DUNCAN is the last of six ‘Daring’ Class Type 45 Destroyers. She is an anti-air warfare destroyer designed primarily to protect UK national and allied/coalition forces against all known airborne threats. The ship is equipped to provide self-protection and local area air defence; her advanced weapon and sensor fi t sets the benchmark standard for air defence destroyer capability.

HMS DUNCAN is the seventh ship in a long line of warships to bear the name. She was built by BAE Surface Fleet in Govan ship yard on the river Clyde, and launched by Lady Marie Ibbotson, wife of Vice Admiral Ibbotson (Ret’d) on 11th October 2010. After launch the ship was fi tted out with its equipment in the Scotstoun shipyard and underwent sea trials in 2012 prior to delivery to the Fleet in 2013. HMS DUNCAN returned from her maiden deployment in November 2015. This was the fi rst 9 month deployment to the Gulf Region for a Type 45, during which HMS DUNCAN conducted maritime security operations with numerous coalition partners to help foster peace in the region and promote prosperity at home.

HISTORY

The ship is named after Admiral Lord Viscount Adam Duncan (1st July 1731 – 4th August 1804) who

defeated the Dutch fl eet at Camperdown on 11th October 1797, securing the country from imminent invasion. Admiral Duncan’s victory is considered one of the most signifi cant actions in naval history.

Ships by the name DUNCAN have been active in defence of Crown and Country for over 200 years. The fi rst was a 38-gun frigate commissioned in 1805, serving mostly in the Indian Ocean. Subsequent DUNCANs include third and fi rst rate ships of the line, a DUNCAN Class of battleship that saw extensive service in the First World War, and a D-Class destroyer which was involved in numerous actions in the Second World War earning 5 battle honours.

The most recent ship to bear the name was a Type 14 or Blackwood Class Frigate, commissioned on 21st October 1958 which served in the ‘Cod Wars’ between the United Kingdom and Iceland over fi shing rights. Also notably, in August 1960 she was an escort to HMY Britannia and in 1964 she fi red the salute at the opening of the Forth Road Bridge. During the early 1980s, she served as a Harbour Training Ship at Rosyth Dockyard and was decommissioned in 1984.

ARMAMENT

The main armament is the Sea Viper Anti-Air Missile System. The system is designed to defend

against supersonic, stealthy and highly manoeuvrable multiple targets approaching the ship with either seaskimming or steep-diving fl ight profi les from several directions at once. Sea Viper is able to control several of its own missiles in the air at any one time, each engaging separate targets, thus preventing attackers from swamping the task group’s air defences.

In addition to Sea Viper, HMS DUNCAN has a comprehensive suite of other weapons and equipment including the 4.5” Mark 8 Mod 1 gun and 30mm guns (integrated with an Electro Optic Gun Control System) and a Multi Function Sonar. The ship has the capacity to operate the Fleet Air Arm’s new Wildcat or Merlin maritime helicopters, and can embark and accommodate a force of up to 60 Royal Marines for various operations.

POWER

HMS DUNCAN utilises an integrated electrical propulsion system. Based around four prime movers,

capable of generating 46MW of power at high voltage, this fl exible system can be confi gured in a variety of ways to meet the different needs of the ship. Power is distributed as required between propulsion, combat systems, weapons, sensors and the domestic needs of the ship.

SHIP’S COMPANY

HMS DUNCAN has a complement of 190 which is divided into four main departments - Warfare, Weapons Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Logistics.

The accommodation provided on the Type 45 Destroyer is very different to that of older ships and offers much better living conditions for the crew. Most Offi cers have single cabins, Senior Ratings live in either single or double-berth cabins and Junior Ratings live in 2 or 6 berth cabins. Each shares a central mess which has a recreational space, TV room, and quiet room. The ship has a fully equipped sickbay, complete with highly trained medical staff and the capacity to deal with major emergencies such as evacuations. A physical trainer specialist is also on board with sports equipment and a gym to maintain crew fi tness and health. Sport and adventurous training can also be arranged for the ship’s company.
