THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 10, 2016

St Christopher’s 50’s Club DAY OF RECOLLECTION

JANUARY 18TH, 2016 Happy New Year! The St. Christopher’s Over 50’s Club will host a Day of Recollection on Monday, January 18, 2016 in Walsh Hall. The day will begin at 9 a.m with coffee and breakfast rolls, at 9:30 a.m Fr. Chris will begin with our first session. At noon we will break for lunch. Please bring your own bag lunch and the club will provide coffee and dessert. The day will end with Fr. Chris celebrating Mass and we will adjourn between 2:00-2:30 p.m. There is no school that day so there is plenty of accessible park-ing. This is a wonderful way to begin the new year and prepare for Lent. If you are planning to attend, please call Jo Bertaccini at 408-266-7364 to reserve a seat. All members of the parish are welcomed to the Day of Recollection.

Dear Parishioners, With the feast of the baptism of the Lord, the focus is now very much on the adult Jesus rather than the child Jesus. The baptism was a watershed in the life of Jesus, the moment when he passed from the relative obscurity of village life in Nazareth onto the public stage of his mission to Israel. At this significant moment of transition, he experienced the coming of the Spirit and an assurance of favour from his Father. In the strength of this experi-ence, he began his mission of proclaiming God's kingdom. There are similar moments of transition in our own faith journey. A time will come for all of us when we feel called to make a more public statement about our faith and the values arising from it, when, like Israel in the first reading, God wishes to make of us 'a witness to the peo-ples In our own world, such public witness can be a daunting prospect as it could mean becoming unpopular, los-ing opportunities for personal advancement, standing alone on certain issues. Like Jesus, we can suddenly find our-selves battling in a wilderness. In that threatening situation, we discover our own vulnerability and our radical need of God. We quickly realize that if we are to be God's witness in our world, we must learn to live, not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Baptism was the beginning of the Great Service of Christ on behalf of us all. When he went down into the river Jordan, and stood waist-deep to be baptized by John, it was a rich sign of dedication to God's will. Baptism was (and is) a deeply religious act. There Jesus the young adult On the verge of his public ministry, made a full surren-der of himself to do whatever God his Father might require of him. Nobody can achieve any good, without the help of God. Whether or not we are aware, any kindness, love, honesty or creativity we accomplish - all is a gift of grace from our heavenly Father. At his Baptism, Jesus received the help he needed to begin his ministry of service. 'God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power' - as Peter puts it. At that moment Jesus began a new phase of his life, moving out from the quiet village of Nazareth into the busy confusion and hectic demands of his public work. He received 'power' to be compassionate towards all, to give himself unstintingly to his followers, to heal and console the many sick who were brought to him. In a less dramatic way, God gives grace to each man and woman, to share in the ministry of Jesus, to continue it in our day. Our problem is - are we willing and generous enough to accept this power, to use it in service? The Servant is appointed to 'bring justice to the nations', to improve things in this world of ours, and right some of the wrongs, heal some of the wounds . . . starting with ourselves. Do I re-ally act as a baptized Christian? How can I better respond to God's call to me to be in the service of my God and my neighbor?

Fr. Chris Bennett

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

The Gospel reading today is a reminder of Je-sus' full embracement of His humanity. He was/is truly one of us. As a product of First Century Palestine, He was influenced not only by the culture of the time but also by being a Jewish citizen under domination of Rome. His was a patriarchal society in which women and children were, if not the property of the males in the family, one step above. Despite this, Jesus professed a message of inclusion. To mention a few examples: His reminder that if we do not become as little children, we will not enter heaven; His dialogue with the Samaritan woman at the well; His extensive interchange with the Syrophoenician woman pleading for her possessed daughter (Mark 7:24-30); His ap-pearance after His resurrection first of all to a woman. Throughout His ministry, Jesus championed for the poor, marginalized, discarded members of society. He was an inclusive force within the downtrodden Jewish people; a voice speaking against the dominate element in control at that time, both cultural and political. Might we reflect on the current struggles of those not included in the white, male dominated social/political structure in which we live: the vic-tims of xenophobia, the homeless, the poor, women in the workplace, the existence of hu-man trafficking/slave labor, etc. During the Jubilee Year of Mercy ought we pray for meaningful discernment as to the manner by which we might bring Jesus' humanity into the 21st Century? Events

If you left a picture of your loved one in the church during the month of November for All Souls, you can pick it up in the parish of-fice, during office hours. Mon—Friday, 8:30am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us

that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by mon-

ey; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking hap-piness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by for-giveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in

weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and

forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the

poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit

for ever and ever. Amen.
