Christian Meditation As taught by Father John Main O.S.B.
Thursday October 26th at 7.30pm
In anticipation of the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls you are warmly invited to participate in the ancient tradition and practice of silent Christian med-itation on Thursday, October 26th. We will be meet-ing in Church at 7.30pm. Meditation brings us to that place of inner silence where “we are simply be-ing with God who is in us in the Holy Spirit whom Jesus has given us” (John Main). Christian meditation is a prayer of faith. “It is more important to experience its power in our lives than to try to understand or explain it”. We will remember and draw closer to the saints and to our loved ones who have passed beyond the limit of our sight, knowing that we are all together in God, and we will hold in our hearts all in our country and in our world who have died in recent tragic events and all who are deeply grieving at this time. The format for our meetings is very simple and will consist of gathering together, followed by a prayer and a reading. We will listen to a recording of John Main for about 10 minutes then a couple of minutes of gentle music, before meditating together for 20 minutes. We will conclude with some more gentle music and candlelight prayers. This invitation is ex-tended with much love to all who have come to pre-vious meditations and also to anyone who has never meditated before. All are welcome – no experience required.

As individuals and as a nation, we are called to make a fundamental ‘option for the poor.’ The obligation to evalu-ate social and economic activity from the viewpoint of the poor and powerless arises from the radical command to love one’s neighbor as one’s self. Those who are marginalized and whose rights are denied have privi-leged claims if society is to provide justice for all. This obligation is deeply rooted in Christian belief.
U.S. Catholic Bishops, “Economic Justice for All”, #87
What God wants is a great wedding feast a feast that is open to all. God is unhappy when folks don’t accept the invitation. “The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests.” The vision is expressed in what we would call today “the option for the poor.” The vision is made concrete whenever we work to include those on the outside…those without power…minorities women, immigrants, refugees, the elderly, the sick, those who don’t fit our expectations and priorities.
The excerpt from Philippians reminds his that the vision of Jesus is a vision of freedom…freedom to have a lot or a little, a freedom to come to the banquet and to share the banquet…freedom to share “in the glorious riches of Jesus Christ.” It is the very opposite of the spirit that leaves a large percentage of the children in the U.S. in poverty. It is the opposite of the spirit of war and terror-ism. It is the very opposite of the spirit that puts us in a world of radical economic inequality and injustice. It is the very opposite of so many of the ‘ungodly’ spirits around us.
