Jackson’s Streak Continues

RedHawks outfielder Nic Jackson is currently on a 31-game on-base streak -- the second highest streak in the AA behind Abel Nieves of the Wichita Wingnuts. Jackson in the last 10 games has went 17-for-35 (.486) with a home run, eight runs scored and 12 RBIs. Recently, Jack-son had one of his best peformances at the plate. On July 12 in Gary, Jackson accumulated four hits, while crossing home three times in a 9-3 victory for the ‘Hawks.

Caldera Looks to Rebound

Alex Caldera’s last start garnered him a no-decision, but heading into that start Caldera had earned four consecutive victories -- the second highest mark in the league. In his four prior starts, Caldera had not allowed more than two runs and had went six innings or more in each. Caldera leads the team in strikeouts (56) and ranks among the league’s best in victories (7, Tied-2nd) and ERA (3.39, 10th). This season’s work so far may have outdone his 10-4 record and 3.50 ERA last year. Pitching Remains a Key to Success

The RedHawks pitching staff boasts the second-best ERA (3.28) in the American Association coming into tonight’s game against the Canar-ies. Starters Taylor Stanton, Jake Laber and Alex Caldera all rank among the league leaders in ERA at third, fifth and 10th, respectively. Pitchers Danny Gutierrez, Joe Harris, Nathan Kilcrease and Mackenzie King all boast under-3.00 ERA’s out of the bullpen for the RedHawks. Vets Crushing it in July

Although the RedHawks are batting a combined .249 in the month of July, two players have thrived. Nic Jackson is hitting .452 in July with a team-leading 19 hits and 12 RBIs, while Zach Penprase has batted .333 on 17 hits, with a team-high five stolen bases and 14 runs scored.

RailCats Earn Split With Fargo-MoorheadCourtesy: Gary SouthShore Media Relations

Gary, IN - The RailCats rallied for three runs in the sixth inning and the bullpen contributed four innings of scoreless relief as Gary SouthShore (33-21) defeated Fargo-Moorhead (32-23) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.

RedHawks Taylor Stanton brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning before loading the bases with one out. Christian Vitters recorded the first hit of the day with a line shot off the glove of the first baseman to score Mike Massaro from third.

Then, Cristian Guerrero reached on a fielder’s choice ground ball to third to score Brian Kolb and Drew Martinez followed him with a solid single to right to score Vitters and make it 3-1 after 6.

The RailCats bullpen would need no other offense as the com-bination of newly signed; Osvaldo Rodriguez, Kyle Lindquist, Ian Durham and Marco Gonzalez kept Fargo-Moorhead off the board in the final four innings.

RailCats starter James Adkins, making a spot start in place of the injured Morgan Coombs, delivered five innings and allowed one run on six hits and one walk. The lefty took a no-decision in his second start of the season.

Fargo-Moorhead struck first with a Nic Jackson RBI single up the middle; his tenth hit in the series. His single scored Buddy Sosnoskie to make it 1-0 in the top of the third. C.J. Retherford followed with a broken bat flare to left but the RailCats avoided any further damage by catching Retherford trying to advance to second in a run down.

The game was devoid of offense for the remainder of the game as each team’s pitching staff controlled the pace of the game.

The Red Hawks threatened in the top of the eighth, earning back-to-back walks to start the inning off of RailCats reliever Ian Durham. C.J. Retherford moved the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt for out number one. Durham then buckled down to strike out Keith Brachold and get Tim Alberts to ground out to short with a great scoop at first by Christian Vitters.

The Red Hawks drew a leadoff walk in the ninth by Ronnie Bourquin off of Railcats closer Marco Gonzalez. Gonzalez sent Todd Jennings and Buddy Sosnoskie down on strikes and closed out the game with a ground ball force out at second to pick up his fourth save.

The Hawks’ head man has led the team to five league titles and most recently a North Division crown last season after a 65-35 regular season performance. Individually, Simunic won a league title as the Winnipeg manager in 1994 – before he came to Fargo – and has won six Manager of the Year Awards during his time with the RedHawks.
