Student Professional Development

• Co-­founded university-­wide Teaching Assistant Learning Conference (held 4 times to date) to provide systematic training in active learning techniques for TA’s

• Co-­founded Teaching Assistant Learning Communities. TA’s participate in graduate student led groups that meet 3 times a semester to provide additional training, advice, and support

• Work with units in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to provide workshops and training opportunities for graduate students. Examples include Improv to Improve: Building Scientific Communication Skills, Networking, Negotiations, Responsible Conduct of Research, for-­credit course in Leadership Skills

• Develop & teach workshop “Demystify Your Dissertation” to prepare students to film the required dissertation video workshop.

• Hosted Graduate Student Mentoring Month with programming for faculty and students designed to improve graduate advising

• Invite speakers from business, industry and government to present to and interact with graduate students and faculty

Development, Fundraising, & Advocacy

• Launched the Three Minute Thesis Competition in February, 2015. Three annual competitions have been held to date. Judging panels include external judges from the media business, industry, and non-­profits. Invited guests include local and state office holders, local staff in Congressional offices, donors and potential donors, staff from the Chancellor’s office, and multiple units across campus. • Work with NDSU Development & Alumni Association to raise funds for special projects

• The goal of holding an annual preconference is to provide moral development scholars with a regular opportunity to interact, enriching their knowledge of the field, learning new methodologies, and building collaborative networks. The preconference has proven quite popular, with the first annual preconference, held at the Society for Research on Adolescence, to be the only preconference to reach capacity and have a waiting list that year.

Online News Editor Society for Research on Adolescence (SRA), January 2010-­December 2012

Provide Vision & Framework for Online News, • Prior to my term, the SRA Newsletter was a print-­based document published twice a year. I was hired for a three year term to launch the online news through a competitive process that required submitting a vision for the online news.

• Key considerations included the need to have a dynamic and changing website with current content;; how to encourage traffic to the website, and how to take advantage of the features and flexibility that are only possible on the internet.

• The framework developed included Announcements, Feature Articles, Members in the News, Adolescence in the News, Podcasts/webinars, Teachers’ Corner, New in Science, SRA Blogs, and archives of SRA Connection. SRA Connection is a weekly email highlighting new website content that is designed to encourage traffic to the website. Hire & Supervise Associate Editors (paid)

• Each of the following Online News areas had an Associate Editor: New in Science;; Feature Articles, Teachers’ Corner

• The Associate Editors were tasked with either writing a monthly or bimonthly piece for their area or soliciting articles from other SRA members Hire & Supervise Bloggers (unpaid, received conference registration)
