A TOP-RANKED LAW SCHOOLDeakin Law School has been ranked as one of Victoria’s top three law schools by the prestigious QS World University Rankings (2014). The QS rankings are based on several criteria, including research, teaching, employability, facilities and internationalisation and engagement.

DEAKIN LAW GRADUATES IN DEMANDDeakin law graduates have an international reputation for their arbitration skills, well-rounded skill set and adaptability. Our graduates are performing extremely well in a highly competitive employment environment, with seasonal clerkships at a record high.

Deakin law graduates are sought after for their well-rounded skill set, adaptability and practical experience.

WHY DEAKIN?

A PRACTICAL CURRICULUMOur Bachelor of Laws is designed to meet the academic requirements to become a barrister or solicitor in Victoria. Leading, practising lawyers help to shape our courses, so everything you learn is relevant to the industry, preparing you for a career in law.

COMMERCIAL FOCUSDeakin Law School boasts an excellent reputation in commercial law, an important and challenging area of practice and one that is changing rapidly. As well as conducting litigation and facilitating property transactions, commercial lawyers are increasingly using their legal expertise to directly contribute to their clients’ business ventures at the formative stages.

DEAKIN LAW STUDENTS RULED BEST IN THE WORLDDeakin Law School triumphed in one of the world’s most prestigious law student competitions, winning the teams award in the 2014 Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna.

“Deakin’s results place it firmly amongst the world’s best – receiving two individual oralist Honourable Mention awards, placing in the top 16 teams of 99 in Hong Kong, and winning the oral arguments overall out of nearly 300 teams in Vienna,” says Professor Mirko Bagaric, Dean, Deakin Law School.

PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT FOR LAW STUDENTSThe Law Clinic program, which in 2015 will be known as legal internships, gives law students a chance to gain practical experience in a legal workplace while earning a credit point towards their degree. The program is continually expanding and while some of the partner organisations are private firms, many others are community legal centres or placements with the Department of Human Services and the TAC.

Law lecturer and legal internship placement coordinator, Marlene Ebejer, explains that “the aim of the internship is to expose students to the legal environment so they can experience what lawyers do and then it can motivate and enhance their learning even more. It helps them decide if they want to actually pursue a career as a lawyer and if so, what type of law they want to practise in the long term.”

Luke Perilli has just completed his Bachelor of Laws with the law clinic component being one of his final units. He says the number one thing he gained from his internship at West Heidelberg Legal Clinic is confidence. “You’re out of your comfort zone; every day you’re doing things that you never thought you’d do in your wildest dreams as a student, it gives you such rich experience and enhances your studies as well.”

Luke believes the other key benefit is that it further develops your time management skills. “If a lawyer gives you a task you need to do it on the spot, but when you’re given an assignment at university you have four weeks to do it. In the real legal world it’s completely different.”

Participating students can add the legal internship experience to their resume, demonstrating to prospective employers that they have employable skills. Luke couldn’t agree more. “You do so many different types of work in the internship, it’s given me so many more skills that I can put on my resumé.”

During the more than 10 years the program has been running, many students have even been offered paralegal and graduate positions at the organisations where they were placed. Many students also continue to volunteer for the various legal centres once qualified.

I consult with industry regularly on the curriculum design, and involve industry

by inviting guest speakers, such as judges, lawyers and senior policy and legal officers

from the relevant statutory bodies.

Studying overseas helps prepare you for the global employment market, develop social and academic skills and learn another language while travelling and having fun.

GAIN REAL EXPERIENCE Work experience plays a critical role in developing graduates’ employability and students undertaking courses offering placement and internship experiences are highly sought after by employers. Regular, compulsory practical learning experiences undertaken throughout the law degree at Deakin means our graduates are confident, work-ready and successful employees.

WHY DEAKIN?

HAPPY STUDENTSDeakin has achieved the highest level of student satisfaction of all Victorian universities for four consecutive years.* So what could Deakin be doing that is giving our students an edge? One factor that might contribute to this is Deakin’s student mentor programs, which focus on students helping other students.

International and domestic students alike have different questions and needs throughout their study lives. Each of these mentor programs aims to meet the needs of these different student cohorts.* 2010–2013 Australian Graduate Survey responses.

INCREASE YOUR CAREER OPTIONSStudies have shown that employers prefer graduates of combined courses. Deakin offers powerful combinations that will help you stand out as a graduate and increase your career options.

STUDY INTERESTING AND COMPLEMENTARY AREAS A combined degree allows you to undertake complementary studies in both degrees while exploring particular areas of interest to you. For example, combining an arts degree with a law degree enhances your understanding of the context in which the law operates. You can choose to study areas such as history, sociology, philosophy, politics or literature, in addition to law studies.

GRADUATE SOONERCombined courses are designed to allow you to complete both courses in as little as four or five years, which is quicker than completing one degree followed by the other.

IT DOESN’T DOUBLE THE WORKCombined degrees are structured in such a way that you will normally study four units (subjects) per trimester, just the same as you would if you were completing a single degree.

WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNINGDeakin graduates hit the ground running thanks to work-integrated learning programs. We offer a wide range of programs that help give you a taste of the real world, from internships to community-based volunteering and more.

COMBINED COURSESCOMBINED COURSES OR ‘DOUBLE DEGREES’Some courses at Deakin let you undertake two degrees at the same time. You’ll complete two degrees faster than it would take to complete them separately, and you’ll also save on university fees.

Law student Tess Blackie recently completed a legal internship at the Child Protection Division of the Department of Human Services in Geelong, during the final year of her Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of International Studies.

“I did it because I wasn’t sure if it was something I wanted to do and I thought it would be really interesting to get a perspective on this area of law. I absolutely loved the placement and I didn’t want to leave,” she says.

Tess says while she found reading about family situations involving child abuse confronting, the clinic was a rewarding experience. “It was good to think that the notes I prepared would be used in a court case and hopefully help put a child somewhere they’ll be safe.”

She found it incredibly motivating to work independently and on real cases. “Not just working for marks but actually working for people who have rights and emotions invested in what you’re doing.”
