M y how time fl ies. I can’t

believe that the Annual meeting is approaching and we have a great venue set up for our organization to provide great education and our governance meeting.

San Francisco has consistently been listed as one of the best destinations for meetings in the country. Having our meeting this year in San Francisco gives us the opportunity to put on great education. The new Dental School at University of the Pacifi c is virtually 2 blocks away from Moscone Center and we will be presenting some dissection courses at the school. Moscone Center itself is a great venue for a meeting with lots of hotels and food right in the vicinity. Bring the family as San Francisco has some of the best sight seeing when you are through with your CE courses.

Governance this year will be interesting as we have elections for Secretary, Vice President and Speaker of the House. All of these elections are contested which means that we have 2 candidates for each position. This years election will be very important for our Delegates to be thoroughly engaged as their votes will count and they have a chance to set the direction of our academy.

We have had a few bumps in the road over the last year which as a Board we have voted to move the academy in the right directions even when we have had a bit of contention and some personality issues. To date, I fi rmly believe that the votes we have made, have moved us forward even though we have had some heated discussions. This has set up a number of contested elections as politics has dictated that potentially opposing directions are visualized by different candidates. Consequently the votes of our delegates becomes very important and the attendance at the caucus and town hall meetings will be extremely important. Delegates, I am sure that you will rise to the occasion and we will have a great governance meeting.

Next year we are going to be in Boston for our annual meeting and then we are going to Vegas for 2017 as we separate governance and the Annual meeting. This provides us with a very great opportunity to put on the best CE and establish an annual meeting that will be second to none.

Financially the Academy is in good shape and we have added in a lot of great member benefi ts so please go to the website and look up your member benefi ts and enjoy the savings.

I am really looking forward to the coming year as Mark Donald takes the reigns of the organization as our President and he will be a good hands-off type of a leader. He has shared his vision over the years and I fully support his direction and we as an organization will grow and prosper through his leadership. He will need all of our support to be successful.

Our governance year has been strong and we have had some extremely good opportunities legislatively and we have built some very strong coalitions that will strengthen us in the future. We recently set ourselves up as a leader in the area of public health awareness and we are moving forward with some of these initiatives. At the very least by hosting this meeting we set ourselves up as a leader in this initiative.

I realize that this report is a bit sporadic and choppy but we have had a busy year and all that I can say is wow, we have a great future. I am honored to serve as your Trustee and look forward to the next years as we move this organization onward and upward.

June 5–7, 2015 NAGD Mastertrack

June 5th – June 7th, the NAGD welcomed Bob Margeas DDS

to Lincoln for his course titled ““Everyday Dentistry — More than Everyday Esthetics Results”. The course was designed to give Operative credit for those engaged in the Mastertrack program.

The Friday lecture was held at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel. The lecture style was informal and entertaining. Dr. Margeas covered key topics such as bonding, preparation design, material selection, and composite polishing. He went into a high level of detail on how full mouth wear cases could be restored in a step-wise manner using composite overlay build-ups on posterior teeth (including over porcelain and gold), finishing with either anterior composite or porcelain veneers or full coverage restorations.

The Friday evening hands on portion ran until 9 p.m. The

first exercise was completion of posterior composite resins on premolar and molar teeth. Dr. Margeas demonstrated his “esthetic” layering technique with focus on properly building out the proximal box area to prevent undercuring and ensure a solid contact using Garrison rings. Dr. Margeas is not immune from issues related to production and dental insurance in his practice and did advocate using a bulk fill resin in posterior applications. We completed the exercise

using 3M Filtek Bulk Fill in an unesthetic manner. A substantial amount of time was spent focusing on polishing, with a multi-finisher approach including disks, brushes, and polishing pastes. Dr. Margeas continued to highlight his favorite Epitex polishing strips by GC America.

The Saturday hands on application focused initially on porcelain veneer preparations. Participants were given a dentiform requiring “instant orthodontics” and a stone cast with an esthetic wax up. Dr. Margeas demonstrated his technique for creating reduction stents, including a unique method where strips are made on the facial at the middle and apical 1/3rds allowing the operator to pull back a strip to visualize further down the tooth. He lectured further on creating esthetic temporaries using a 2-step method starting on the incisal 1/3 to get length, and finishing the middle and apical 2/3rds for contour. The afternoon exercise was centered on creating a composite layered veneer using five different shades and tones to create realistic translucency. A significant amount of time was spent showing the class polishing and texturing techniques to accent the composite placed. A main take away was to give the facial texture using a diamond burr, then to polish (but not buff out) the lines using a jiffy type brush. A main critique was the lack of development anatomy on the facial, so he gave the class a lesson

in using diamond burrs to create realistic 3D anatomy to reflect light properly.

The final hands on session Sunday finished out the weekend with a Class IV composite restoration using lingual stents and the layered technique learned on Saturday. Dr. Margeas was very hands-on and readily gave advice to the whole class on an individualized basis.
