As we closed out the old year and prepared to enter the new year, a number of our Del Tura Tennis Association tennis players gathered on the four north courts for FUN.

The Four teams were the Servers, Receivers, Lobbers, and Poachers.

In addition to playing a traditional set of tennis the games included Tennis Volley Ball, (using volley ball rules), Single Racquet Doubles, Tennis Ball Dribble and Paddle Relay, Target Shoot (most diffi cult), Tennis Ball Lob and Plastic Bag Catch.

Something just a little different, as you may imagine, and lots of laughter prevailed.

The pictures on this page show the winners as well as the man who thought all of this up and put it all into place, Stan Young, assisted by his wife Irma.

A tribute was also given to the couple who have played tennis as a couple the longest here, Jack and Vera Lingeman.

At the January HOA Board meeting, Louise Wil-cox, Chair of the Nominating Committee, made a fi nal re-quest for candidates to serve as HOA Board members. As there were no nominations, and the three Board mem-bers whose terms expire in February had agreed to serve another term, no elections will be necessary.

Nevertheless, we’ll an-nounce the winners of our Person of the Year and Cou-ple of the Year awards at the February Board meeting (Wednesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m.), so I hope many of you will be there to con-gratulate these people who have given so much to the community.

The new HOA Offi ce, lo-cated at 18571 Avenida Es-

DEL DEL TURATURA From the President’s Desk

corial, is open. The phone number remains the same: (239) 731-3461. Hometown America has agreed to allow the HOA Board to continue to display items on the bulle-tin board outside the former Clubhouse offi ce.

Please display the Neigh-borhood Watch decals prominently on your home and your golf carts. The more people involved, and the more visibly they show their commitment to report-ing suspicious sightings, the stronger the program. (If your January Tower did not include decals, you can get them at the HOA Offi ce.) And while we are on the sub-ject of safety, please deter would-be thieves of cars left outside overnight by mov-ing all valuables out of sight,

closing windows and locking the doors.

Between the Entertain-ment Committee and the spe-cial event they have planned, February will be anything but dull. I hope you’ll enjoy everything we have planned.

Finally, heartfelt thanks from all of us go out to Anna Wilson, who, after many years of coordinating deliv-ery of the Tower, has decided to scale back on her commit-ments. Anna, we’ll try our best to keep up your good work.

DEL DEL TURATURA MailbagOn December 13, 2013,

I tripped over a piece of sidewalk that was sticking up about an inch. I was very badly bruised and shaken but, thankfully, no bones were broken. I reported it to Hometown and they fi xed the problem within a week, for which I am very grateful. If you see a part of the side-walk that is a hazard please report it to Hometown. If they don’t know about it, they can’t fi x it. All the Del Tura walkers and I will be very grateful to you.

Sincerely,Vera Lingeman

DEL DEL TURATURA Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Collections

By Charlene & Ron Ruotolo and Betty & Dave Scheetz

This year the Basket Charity Program continued to be as successful as it has in the past. We always knew this was one of the most giv-ing communities not only with your donations but

with the overwhelming vol-unteer effort that makes pro-grams like this possible. You showed it this year again. What better sense of enjoy-ment than helping less for-tunate families during the Holidays. But without you wonderful people, that are so giving, it would not be

possible. Give yourself a round of applause.

We provided food and gifts to 70 less fortunate families this year, up from 46 last year, and as you can see from the fi nancials (shown below) the Basket Program is positioned to help 70 families next year also. In addition, to the baskets for 70 families we were also able to donate ~75 toys, numerous bags/boxes of food and $2000 to Sun Coast.

For those of you that do not know, we provide com-plete Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners as well as Christmas gifts for ev-eryone in each family. As we did last year, we have already started buying gifts for next year. We will con-tinue to try to take advan-tage of all the store sales as the year goes on.

Again our heart felt thanks to everyone who do-nated to the holiday collec-tion and to all the volunteers that collected, wrapped and packed the baskets. We would like to mention all of you by name but the list is just TOO long.

International Food Fair - 2015

By Dennis Cottini & Heléne M. Glasson

The Starlight Ballroom’s lights have gone out on a beloved annual Del Tura tradition for 2014, the International Food Fair. Due to countries bowing out and the inability to acquire replace-ments, we made the decision to cancel this event for 2014.

In order to make this event successful in 2015, we need new volunteers to step forward and represent a country. Please note you certainly do not need to be of the country’s nationality. Simply choose a menu of 2-3 food items to be served in ap-petizer portions. You are allowed a combined budget for both food and booth decorations. Decorating your booth is a must and is lots of fun! The HOA supplies the colored tablecloths and serving pieces.

We need your creativity and we know you are out there. Volunteers for publicity, ticket sales, table/beverage setup and cleanup are also needed. To make the Food Fair possible, nine countries need to be rep-resented in order to have a suc-cessful event. As of this writing, we do have some commitments. Also, keep in mind, the tradi-tional date for this event has been the fi rst Saturday in Feb-ruary. Please call us if you have any questions, 217-0592.

ASSUMPTIONS Can Be Dangerous to Investors Every day of our lives, we make assumptions. We assume that the people we encounter regularly will behave in the manner to which we are accus-tomed. We assume that if we take care of our cars, they will get us to where we want to go. In fact, we need to make assumptions to bring order to our world. But in some parts of our life — such as investing — assumptions can prove dangerous.

Of course, not all investment-related assumptions are bad. But here are a few that, at the least, may prove to be counter-productive:

would probably have said that real estate is always a good investment. But since then, we’re all more painfully aware that housing prices can rise and

on your goals and risk tolerance. But don’t expect endless gains, with no setbacks.

gold-mining companies.

think that, since the price of your investment has dropped, you must have made the wrong choice. This type of thinking causes investors to hold on

sional, who can provide you with strategies designed to help cope with long-term care costs.

DEL DEL TURATURA Safety

New Year is sure to bring in Old Cons

A cool breeze, magnifi -cent sunsets, and the return of friends and neighbors from up north is a gentle reminder that Southwest Florida is an amaz-ing place to live, work and play. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year unscrupulous “Door-to-Door” con-artists head our way looking for an opportunity to take advantage of homeowners’ by offering to sell household cleaning products, books, and magazines. The Lee County Sheriff’s Offi ce encourages you to follow the tips below should you receive a knock on the door from someone selling or solicit-ing in your neighborhood, and reminds you it is highly likely that a door-to-door solicitor may have an ulterior motive in mind.

Keep all doors, including the garage door, closed and locked at all times, especially when

you are outside working in the yard. Stepping away from the front of the house to retrieve something in the backyard is all the time needed to gain ac-cess to your home.

If you answer the door, never invite someone you don’t know in to your home. Instead speak with them through a window or step outside, closing the door behind you.

Be the eyes and ears of your neighborhood. Don’t hesitate to report unknown or suspi-cious people, activity, or ve-hicles; particularly large pas-senger vans dropping of “sales crews”.

Before you make a decision to purchase something from a door to door sales person, ask for the information in writing and tell them you want to think about it and will get back to them. If they use high pressure sales tactics telling you “the deal is only good now”, the Sherriff’s Offi ce suggests you politely disengage and pass on

“the deal”. Legitimate sales as-sociates want to make the sale even if that means they have to wait a day or two.

Last but not least, don’t do business with door-to-door contractors such as tree trim-mers, landscapers, roof repair-ers, driveway paving com-panies attempting to sell left over material, and other home repair solicitors.

For more information about this Safety and Security tip or to report a fraud or scam, con-tact the Sheriff’s Offi ce Fraud Line at 258-3292. To report a suspicious person or vehicle, call 477-1000. In an emergen-cy, dial 911.

In keeping with our Neigh-borhood Watch program, The Tower has printed this warning information provided from the Sheriff’s offi ce. While we are a gated community, there are times when the above activi-ties can take place. We all need to watch out for both ourselves and our neighbors.

On Tuesday, January 7, FISH Board of Directors held their election meeting. The six FISH Directors who con-tinue serving their terms of commitment are Carolyn Cole, Vice President, Joanne Nitka, Ruth Anten, Rich Keen, Christine Raynor, Secretary, Rich Symes. Also joining the Board are Gerry Benjamins as Treasurer and Ginnie Ben-jamins as President, and new director, Betty Scheetz.

As the president I received a report from Joanne Nitka about the meals that have been delivered this past year to residents who are just home from the hospital. FISH vol-unteers delivered twenty-eight meals. Those wonderful car-ing people are Dianne Conlon, Bev Duff, Vivian Gray, Ellie Haug, MaryAnn Hoder, Fran Knoodle, Sherry Plisch, Chris

Raynor, Linda Schoonmaker, Bonnie Sharpless and Joan Whaley. These women are to be applauded for their service. I, myself, received a dinner last January after an operation.

At Coffee on each Tuesday during January, a fl yer show-ing how your contributions made it possible for the trailer, where the medical equipment is stored, to be rebuilt stron-ger than ever were displayed. FISH appreciates all the con-tributions you were able to give. I know it always seems as if some organization needs money, but believe me, this went to a very good cause. If we wanted to continue to serve the needs of residents and rent-ers in their time of need, we needed to repair the trailer. Thanks again.

To just say “Thanks” to Di-anne Conlon and Marge Lord

for their many years of service does not cover all the time and work and great ideas that FISH enjoyed. If you see either of these lovely ladies, please let them know how much they mean to this community and give them a hug.

Don’t forget on Tuesday, February 11, after Coffee, there will be an open house at the rebuilt trailer. Please come and see our “new” trailer.

DEL DEL TURATURA Meet Your Neighbor

By Sue Dunigan

Al and Ida Capuano159 Las Palmas Blvd

Ida answered the phone when I called to confi rm the in-terview appointment. She said over her shoulder to Al, Honey it is Sue about the Tower article, and then with a delightful laugh she explained to me, “ we have been married seventy-one years and still call each other Hon-ey”. I knew right then that this was going to be special time with an extraordinary couple.

Al and Ida freely shared with me about their courtship, mili-tary lives, careers and family life through the years.

They were born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. They lived just two blocks from one an-other but did not discover this until their late teens. One day Al (age eighteen ) and his two buddies decided to walk down a street in a direction they had never gone and discovered a beautiful gal sitting on the steps in front of her home (Ida, age seventeen). Al and Ida were sitting in front of me at the ta-ble and smiled sweetly at each other and said they have been together every day since. They went together for three years. Ida teasingly says that she paid for their dates those fi rst few months, as she had graduated early and was working while Al was fi nishing his senior year of high school. Ida hurried to say that Al paid for everything once he was working and they enjoyed much more elaborate dates. Again, a tender smile was shared between them.

Al was drafted nine months after they were married, and Ida followed him to wherever he was stationed. Which in-cluded Maryland, Arkansas, Wisconsin, and North Carolina but couldn’t follow when he was shipped to Germany.

Al had a faraway look in his eyes as he told about the war

experience in 1942 -1943. Al and his company hit the beach July 12 and he was captured July 18. He was a POW for ten months being moved like cattle from camp to camp in box cars. He suffered like all POWS but did encounter one kind guard who assigned Al to indoor work duty because of his ail-ments. One day his fellow prisoners were complaining to Cappy, as they called him, that they needed haircuts. So he found an old rusty pair of scis-sors and a comb and began to cut their hair. He laughed and said, “That was the beginning of my career as a barber.”

He went on to say that it was kind of strange, the war was over and on the last day as a POW the guards simply took off their uniforms and went their way. The prisoners left going the other. Ida didn’t know for months that Al was a POW and when her boss told her it was a complete shock. She loved her job as a stenog-rapher but didn’t work much after that.

When Al fi nally got back to Columbus , his own barber asked him, “Why don’t you go to barber school and then come work for me?” So he did. Uncle Sam paid for his school-ing and Al worked for him for 12 years. Al’s eyes were bright as he said he was very lucky and had great clients and was able to open his own shop, which he owned and operated for 25 years with six employ-ees. Ohio state coaches, ball players, Senators and a Gov-ernor were his clients. Their only child, Richard became a barber and worked for him for a for a few years, Al proudly stated.

Richard went on to work in New York in downtown Man-hattan which he loved, then eventually moved to Florida and ran our own Del Tura Pro shop for 25 years. The retire-ment party for Richard was re-

ally something, Ida said with her big eyes twinkling.

In 1985, Al and Ida bought a model home that was on dis-play here in Del Tura and had it set up at 159. They had bought it as an investment and went back to Columbus. It was such a bitter cold winter, they decid-ed to sell the business and their home and moved here full time that following summer.

They immediately got in-volved with EVERYTHING, Golfi ng, Bingo, volunteering and they went to all the danc-es and shows. Al started the ITALIAN NIGHT and was in charge of all the planning. Al loved to golf and made the course record in 1987 with a score of 56. They had several couples that they grew close to and enjoyed many of the activ-ities together through the years although Ida said many are no longer here.

They have gone on thirty-one cruises and the Panama Canal was their favorite. They had planned to go on another one this past November but had to cancel it at the last min-ute because of Ida’s health is-sues.

While living in Ohio, they were given tickets and went to the Rose Bowl twice and enjoyed the parades so much. The Athletic director of Ohio State, Hugh Hindman, was Al’s good friend and gave him four tickets (faculty seats) every year for years to the Buckeye games. They are still huge fans. One year Ida was given a large bag of Chestnuts. (Buckeye fans know what this means) and she made necklac-es out them for everyone .

They both, in their genteel manner, said they have truly enjoyed doing things together for over seventy-four years. Cappy inserted with a sly grin that guys often ask him, “How have you done it for so many years?” He says he responds to that question by saying

that’s an easy one,I just always say “yes dear”. All three of us laughed out loud and I watched again, as Al an Ida squeezed their hands together on the ta-ble in front of me.

Al went on to share how he had sponsored a Golf Tourna-ment every year for twenty years for his customers with dinner and prizes, the whole works! They chimed in at the

same time to say, “People were standing in line for this fantas-tic event!” I might add, that if all of the Capuano’s neighbors knew what an interesting and charming couple they are, they too would be standing in line to spend time with them. They are a unique and wonderful part of the Del Tura Communi-ty family. I count it a privilege to be their friend and neighbor.

TURATURA Book Review

Submitted by Eleanor Bergman

This story is about Nick, a writer, and his wife, Amy, who have both recently lost their jobs in New York be-cause of the changing econ-omy. Because of the poor health of his parents, Nick’s twin sister persuades Nick and Amy to move back to Nick’s home town of North Carthage, Missouri.

Amy, a New Yorker, was brought up by wealthy par-ents who made millions writing a series of children’s books about Amy, the per-fect child who always did the right thing. Nick opens a bar with his twin in Carthage with money Amy inherited from her parents. They move into a “McMansion” situ-ated on the river in Carthage. Amy, the perfect wife, seems to accept the move.

They have now been in Carthage for two years and it is their fi fth wedding an-niversary. Their marriage is a bit rocky, but Amy is still trying to make Nick into a perfect husband. Amy al-ways sets up a treasure hunt for Nick on their anniversa-ries with each clue leading to the hiding place of the next clue until he reaches the end – and his present. The prob-lem with Amy’s treasure hunts is that he never fi gures out all the clues!

This day Nick arrives home from work to fi nd the cat out-side and the front door wide open. In the living room the

glass coffee table is shat-tered, end tables are turned over, books are scattered across the fl oor, and a pair of sharp scissors are in the middle of the mess. Blood had been mopped up in the kitchen. The ironing board is up with the iron still on. Amy is not there – she is gone! The police are called and other clues are found. It is believed Amy was mur-dered, and all clues point to Nick as the murderer. But is he? Had she really been mur-dered – or was she still alive?

The chapters alternate between Nick and Amy telling the story of their marriage, Amy’s disap-

pearance, and the efforts to solve her strange disappear-ance. Nick fi nds Amy’s fi rst letter with clues leading to his anniversary present, and he feels this will lead him to fi nding his missing wife.

The plot takes many strange turns as each tells their story. Nick stands by his innocence, although a series of his deceits and inappropriate behavior sur-face. Through her diary, beautiful, clever Amy, the alpha girl, shows her socio-pathic behavior.

This story is suspenseful, chilling and surprising. It made me want to keep read-ing to its unsettling end.

DEL DEL TURATURA Golf Cart Parade Thank You

We would like to thank all those who made the golf cart parade a success. First of all, a big “thank you” to the HOA for their support of the event, with special thanks to Kevin Wilcox for his help with get-ting the supplies for us and lending both hands in setting up.

Ruth Ann Blevins for her cooperation and suggestions. Ron Raming for videoing .

Donna Burns Phillips and Mary White for representing the HOA in the parade.

Thanks also to the over one hundred people who attended the pre-parade cocktail party. Everyone brought delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts and joined in the contests and drawings.

The hard-working com-mittee members, Bill and Joan Harris, Barbara Boyd, Jan Loosli, Jayleen Ruffalo,

Marisa Godbout, Ron Ram-ing, Peggy Peters, and Ron Winsor were a pleasure to work with and a big help.

Much appreciation to Anna Wilson, Molly Walker, Bar-bara “Pearl” Boyd and Ron Winsor for participating in our skits promoting the parade at Coffee hours. We give addi-tional thanks to Molly Walker for her on-going encourage-ment. Special thanks also to Doris Meyer for always sup-porting our promotions in The Tower, and for providing much appreciated feedback and sug-gestions, Dave Jacobs for sound assistance, and Henry Moreau for leading the sing-ing on Las Palmas Norte.

The video Ron Raming took can be seen on the HOA website.

Much appreciation to Bob Masson for leading the parade on his wonderfully decorated

motorcycle, Walter Murphy and Peg McTernan for being our Santa and Mrs. Claus.

And, to those who deco-rated their golf carts in the parade - BRAVO! You outdid yourselves. There were forty golf carts, beautifully adorned with very enthusiastic people riding in them. You gave the parade watchers a real show. And, the parade watchers -- your encouragement, ap-plause, smiles, and holiday wishes are greatly appreciat-ed. We estimate between two hundred fi fty to three hundred people viewed the parade. Who needs the Macy’s or Rose Bowl Parade when you can have so much fun here at Del Tura? We hope you will plan to be part of it in 2014.

Love to all, “The Corny Cousins”

Heléne M. Glasson

It is just the fi rst week of January as I write this article for the February Tower. Our friends from the deep freeze, which is currently affecting nearly the entire northern half of the United States, are leav-ing in droves and are on their way down to Florida. We anx-iously await their arrival in Del Tura. They all look for-ward to enjoying the warmer weather and the great ame-nities and activities we have here. Some may be looking forward to the 2014 entertain-ment we planned for them in early 2013. By the time you receive this issue of the Tower only two dances and two pro-fessional shows will remain in our current lineup. Following is what we have planned for

your listening and dancing en-joyment.

We are dedicating this dance to her memory and her leadership of the Entertainment Committee over the past fi ve years.

BACK HOME AGAIN – A TRIBUTE TO JOHN DEN-VER FEATURING TOM BECKER, Saturday, March

If you have further ques-tions about any of our dances and shows or would just like to purchase tickets on days other than at Tuesday Coffees, just contact me, Heléne Glasson. My phone number is 239-217-0592.

This is the fi rst year the current members of the Enter-tainment Committee will be selecting the entertainers who will make up the 2014-2015 season. We are excited to have this opportunity and look forward to bringing our fellow Del Turians the best entertain-ment our budget allows. Just so you know, Erich is already booked and will be back to Del Tura in September! Thank you in advance for your continued support.

“First Impressions”By Dianne J. Roderick

First people experiences-what do we learn from them? What do they tell us? From the very beginning of our lives throughout the last seasons of our lives, we experience many fi rsts. As infants our very fi rst human connection begins at our birth. An infant can feel tender touches and hear loving sounds. Consoling smiles in those fi rst precious months of life will set the stage for all of life and will set the parameters for how trusting and cautious people will be throughout their lives.

As young children and lat-er as adults our experiences take us to that unpredictable world outside. Suddenly we fi nd ourselves immersed in many different surroundings,

and in some instances, with people who are not always as welcoming and kind as we so innocently were led to believe. How does one react to these situations? Somehow these life experiences teach us to defend ourselves and protect our feelings. Some individuals choose to keep their thoughts and feelings to themselves and are often viewed as shy, dis-tant, or even cold. Others ex-hibit outgoing behaviors and will share their feelings with-out reservation. Thank God we are all different! With all the differences among each of us there are some needs that make us the same! Let’s think about this and how we can use those needs to make each oth-er feel better each day.

As adults in our “Golden Years”, we continue to enjoy fi rst experiences each day.

Think about how you feel when you meet someone while you’re out walking, attending a function in our community, or joining a group for the fi rst time. What are some of the things that make you feel more comfortable? Allow you to re-lax and help you feel at ease in these different situations? For me, a warm greeting, a hug, and a welcoming smile will say it all!

We may not know what is going on in someone else’s life; everyone has his or her own personal battles to fi ght as they travel along life’s journey. As individuals we cannot change what happened yesterday or predict what will happen to-morrow, but we do have to-day. We can choose to make it better, even with all our aches and pains, by sharing good feelings and a smile with each

ReflectionsDEL DEL TURATURA

other. It doesn’t cost anything, and it will send a message that says, “I care!” A kind word and the power of that smile can re-new hope within each of us!

In this world I realize how easy it can become for some-one to put walls up and close others out. So many people carry hurt and loneliness their their lives. Together we can turn frowns into smiles,

tears to joy, dismay to hope, negatives to positives, disap-pointments to happiness, dis-crimination to acceptance, loneliness to friendship… and so much more. So my friends as we enter this month of hearts and continue to work on our New Year’s resolutions, let’s listen to our hearts and send messages that will have everlasting effects.

You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catch-ing you unaware of the pass-ing years.

It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is, my friends

DEL DEL TURATURA Humor are retired and getting grey.

They move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me, but, I see the great change. Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant, but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d be.

Each day now, I fi nd that just getting a shower is a real tar-get for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore - it’s mandatory! Cause if I don’t on my own free will - I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so now I enter into this new season of my life unpre-pared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!

But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I’m not sure how long it will last, but this I know, that

when it’s over on this earth, it’s NOT over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done. Things I should have done. But indeed, there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime.

So, if you’re not in your win-ter yet, let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long!

Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

“Life” is a gift to you. The

way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

Live it well! Enjoy today! Do something fun! Be happy!

REMEMBER:.... It is health that is real wealth

and not pieces of gold and sil-ver.

Live happy in this year and every year!

Lastly, consider the follow-ing:

Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be so, enjoy this day while it lasts.

Your kids are becoming you.Going out is good.. Coming

home is better! You forget names, but it’s

OK because other people for-got they even knew you!

You realize you’re never go-ing to be really good at any-thing, especially golf.

The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don’t care to do them anymore.

You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It’s called pre-sleep.

You miss the days when ev-erything worked with just an ON and OFF switch..

You tend to use more four letter words ... what?, when?, who?, and where?

Now that you can afford ex-pensive jewelry, it’s not safe to wear it anywhere.

You notice everything they sell in stores is sleeveless!

What used to be freckles are now liver spots.

Everybody whispers. You have three sizes of

clothes in your closet, two of which you will never wear.

But old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD Friends!

It’s Not What You Gather, but What You Scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.

TURATURAFriday Shuffleboard League

By Jack Blevons I am writing this article on a

very cold Friday night, after play-ing today while temperatures that never reached 60! Not typi-cal weather to play shuffl eboard. If you were to see us today you would have noticed that no one was playing in shorts and T-shirts but instead, were playing in long pants, jackets, caps and gloves. This included Janet and myself. Now I know this doesn’t have any comparison to what they are hav-ing all over the rest of the coun-try, especially the Midwest where we come from and the Northeast where probably the most of you come from. But for us softies down here, this is cold!!! And next

week they are talking lows in the 30’s ! Brrrrrrrrrr!

Anyhow, we managed to get our 3 games in today and the standings after today’s play are as follows: In the “A” fl ight, in 1st place are Jack and Janet Blevons at 20/4, followed by Bob Craw-ford/Ben Hargraves in 2nd place at 19/5.

They are followed by Fred and Carolyn Brueggemann in 3rd place at 16/8. The “B” fl ight lead-ers are Dave and Nancy Denny at 18/6, followed by Mollie Brown/Ellen Slusarski in 2nd place at 13/11 and 3 teams tied for 3rd place at 12/12, Leon and Mary Lou Buss, Joe Vigilante/John Eck and Lynne Sable/Barb Jones.

As the standings show, the rac-

es in both fl ights are still tight and there is a lot of season left because we play into the middle of March. We are still in need of subs for our league because four subs that became regular team members, replaced 2 teams that we recently lost, one due to illness and the other who left our community and moved farther north in our state. We did replace those four people but that really left us short on subs. So, again, anyone who would like to be a sub please contact Janet or myself at 731-0892 and if we aren’t home to answer, please leave a message on our voice mail. Hopefully now with the holidays over and renters down here, we can pick up more people to be subs. Even if you haven’t played a

Sometimes it is even cold in Florida! We welcomed 2014 with a cool New Year’s Eve and some unsettling weather, but also with a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks. January through March is “season” and we try to have as many activities as pos-sible for those who are only here for a few months.

We prefer not to have signifi -cant tournaments in January but

the Pro Shop hosted Glow Ball on January 18. Next month, on Feb-ruary 22, there will be an ABCD tournament. Ryan continues with his Wednesday clinics. Sign up sheets are in the Pro Shop. And of course, the Friday Night Scrambles are always popular.

Our fi rst event of this year is the Ladies 18-Hole Valentine tourna-ment on February 13. February 27 will be the Member-Guest. Check for details in the dungeon. The President’s Cup and Men’s

DEL DEL TURATURA Amigos Report

By Jay Flanagan

On the fi rst Monday of January the men’s softball team, the Del Tura Amigos, opened their season in the new Mark and Mary Ford League in Punta Gorda. After playing in Cape Coral for the past twenty-one years when the league was started in 1992 by Del Tura resident Mark Ford, a new league was formed and games are being played in the beautiful Carmelita Sports Park off Florida St. just north of Edison State College.

After an impressive opening ceremony during which all of the teams were introduced and Mary Ford tossed out the fi rst pitch, the Amigos took on the Old Bridge Village People. The team showed an impressive hitting ability by scoring 1 run in the fi rst inning then coming up four more 5 run innings to win easily by the score of 21 to 8. Five different hitters each had 3 hits apiece in the 28 hit attack with 4 more players adding 2 hits. Shortstop Rick Bourquin led the hit parade with a home run, double and a single with Rick Antaya, John Ruttman, Don Va-deboncouer and Mike Scott also

providing three.Eleven different Amigos were

credited with a run batted in with Bourquin leading the way with 5.

In the second game of the week, the Amigos faced a tough Buccaneer Pirates squad and great defense led to a 12 to 1 vic-tory. The infi eld came up with four double plays to keep the Pi-rates from mounting a serious offensive threat. John Ruttman and Dave Denman led the offense with three hits apiece while four others had two hits of the 18 the Amigos had for the night.

The Amigos had a great crowd for each of their games and as a reminder, those interested in see-ing the team dressed out in their brand new uniforms, games are held each Monday and Wednes-day beginning at 5:30 p.m. To reach the complex, take 41 north to Taylor Rd. (just after the Edi-son State College sign) and fol-low it through Jones Loop to the second light at Airport Rd. Take a right on Airport and go to the overpass over I75 where you take a left. The fi elds are approximate-ly a mile up Florida on the left just past Edison.

Jack and Jill will be in March. As well as playing at Del Tura,

the Women have the opportunity, through LEGA, to visit other clubs in the area for golf and lunch. In January we went to Pine Lakes. A schedule of other courses will be set up next month and posted. Sign up and take advantage of the chance to meet golfers from near-by clubs and play area courses. In LEGA you play with handicap so everyone has a chance.

If you are new to Del Tura and interested in joining our Associa-tion, please contact Liz Flannigan at 543-1640 for more information. We play every Thursday and try to have a variety of team and individ-ual games as well as closest to the pin and Blind Bogey. Something for everyone!

We don’t play baseball but it is three strikes and you need help! One day of bad golf, forget it, two days in a row, review fundamen-tals, three days in a row go see your Pro! Remember those clinics I mentioned? Bring a friend, who also struck out, and have fun!

lot, we can use you and will gladly help to teach you the game. We have a great group of 40 regular league players, and we have a lot of fun. We play every Friday af-ternoon, starting at 1:00 p.m. and play three games each week. Usu-ally we fi nish between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m.

In the past weeks we have found three different push sticks that were broken. We were able to fi x two of them. I have also no-ticed that someone has been using our chalk to write all over the ce-

ment area by our scoreboards. I tend to think this could possibly be a young visitor here over the holidays visiting parents or grand-parents. This is not what our chalk is for, so hopefully this won’t continue to happen. Children are supposed to be supervised by our residents when using all our com-munity’s facilities and if they are, this sort of thing shouldn’t hap-pen. Please treat all our facilities here as if they were your own. Re-pairs tend to be expensive. Thank you for understanding.

DEL DEL TURATURA Del Tura Men’s Golf Assoc.

By Jay Flanagan

The Men’s Golf Association of Del Tura is busily working on the logistics of their up-coming tournaments while the Partner Match Play continues on Wednesday mornings.

Plans for the Ryder Cup, taking place on January 31, February 1 and 2 have been completed. The team draft has taken place and the cap-tains have put together their line-ups for the competition.

Every thing seems to be falling into place for the Mem-ber-Member Tournament on February 26 and 27 and for the Men’s Member-Guest Tourna-ment on March 7 and 8.

The Partner Match play had 32 teams start on the open-ing week, and after the fi rst Wednesday the entries were

whittled in half to 16. This tournament will be completed on January 29 as competing teams continue to play as long as they win.

All Men’s Golf Association members are reminded that your 2014 dues are now past due if you haven’t paid. The $25.00 fee can be given to the Pro-Shop or to Treasurer Ran-dy Gottsacker. Checks should be made out to DTMGA. Membership allows you to compete in the many tourna-ments and on the Wednesday Men’s League contests.

All are also reminded that skin games take place on Sun-day, Monday, Tuesday, Thurs-day and Friday. Sign up sheets for each day are posted in the dungeon and are taken down two days before the competi-tion.

Good Timers Singles NewsDEL DEL TURATURA

By Susan Savitt

“Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful.”

~Annette Funicello

I recently received a card from my wise and good friend, Marge Lord, a special lady so many Del Turians are fortunate to call their friend. The above quote from a singer and actress many remember from the 60’s, was on the cov-er of the card. I paused and refl ected on the quote. An-nette wrote a book entitled “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” in which she talks about her career challenges and her struggle with mul-tiple sclerosis. She also tells about issues in her personal life, which combine to lead one to agree that her life was not a “perfect” one. She does not dwell on this. Rather she emphasizes the “good times”

and how important it is to ac-cept that life is not perfect. She also discusses the role her friends played in helping her realize how wonderful her life was without worrying if it was perfect. Their kindness, car-ing, and sharing enhanced her happiness. Many Good Tim-ers, and others in Del Tura, like Marge Lord, take time, through their friendship, to make us realize, that although not perfect, our lives are won-derful.

The Good Timers offi cers for 2013-14 are Peg McTernan, president, Mary Lou Pudlo, vice-president, Anna Wilson, secretary, and Louise Dodge, treasurer. We thank them for giving their time to make the organization run smoothly.

At our January meeting, we welcomed new members, Ann Boncore, Annette Artini, and Cheryl Stepanek. We are very happy to have them as part of

the Good Timers. Thanks to Sylvia Miller for being acting secretary for this meeting.

As we go to press, there is no date set for the Janu-ary birthday dinner. Mem-bers should check the bulletin board across from the Pub for further information. Mem-bers celebrating their birth-days during this fi rst month of the year include Marge Apple-baum and Sue Highfi ll. The February dinner will be held at a date to be determined. It will be at the Fountain Grille and there will be no cost to those who were members last year. Further details of that dinner will be shared at the next monthly meeting held on February 4 in the Poinciana Ballroom at 5:00 p.m. Follow-ing the February meeting, we will hold our annual Sweets Party, which we dedicate each year to Lorraine Grein-er, a past HOA president and

Good Timers member. We celebrate the memory of Lor-raine and other past members who although are not with us in person will always remain in our hearts. Each member is requested to bring a “sweet” to share.

Although we have, at pres-ent, no members with birth-days in February, Peg came up with the idea last year that we should celebrate those who have birthdays during the summer months and are not in Del Tura at that time. We will do that once again this year and celebrate the birthdays of Bea Botterbusch, Anna Gessner, Pat Gilmour, Joan Johnson, Esther Kuntz, Nancy Lich, Susan Savitt, and Betty Mennen.

Dates members should cir-cle on their calendars include April 10, 2014, for the Road Rally. Esther Kuntz and Pat Gilmour will once again chair

this fun Scavenger Hunt and challenge us to ride through the streets of Del Tura to locate objects. We will be rewarded with a pizza party and prizes following the event. Further details will be discussed at the February and March meetings.

The Kentucky Derby Party will be held Saturday, May 2, 2014. Peg has requested volun-teers to chair this Good Tim-ers’ favorite event. Be sure to save the date. Details will follow in the next few months.

In closing for this month, I’d like to give a shout out to Bill Southwick who is always encouraging, helpful, and car-ing, and says the right words at the right time to put a smile on our faces. We appreciate you, Bill.

Wishing everyone a Val-entine’s Day full of happiness and much love.
