From the Desk of the PresidentI can’t believe it’s the middle of winter. Are you

enjoying this beautiful weather as much as I am? What makes it the most enjoyable is having all our friends here with us. Our entertainment committee has chosen great professional shows and bands for our enjoyment, so get your tickets early.

I hope you attended the Health Fair and talked with the many Health Care Professionals. There are many new devices available for use in our homes along with “Home Visits from Doctors”. Blood pressure, weight, medication effects, pacemaker and many more things can be checked over the phone in our homes. Stop in and talk to one of the “Choices” nurses right here in Del Tura on Tuesday mornings if you want additional information. If you have an operation coming up, stop by “Choices”, they will make sure you have any needed assistance, DMe equipment and therapy. What ever you need they can set it up.

Great progress is being made on “The Wall”. If you haven’t seen it, take a drive on La Paloma and peak between the houses. After twenty years, the wall is a reality. So many residents donated hours and hours of work to make this happen. “Thank you.” You have improved all of our lives. The wall will reduce noise and also act as a safety barrier for all our residents who live along the perimeter. A celebration will be planned at the completion of the wall.

We NeeD YOU. Join the Fitness Challenge: Del Tura versus Tara Woods. This challenge will help folks to stay fit and stay functional. Dr. Salvatore Lacagnina and Marty Robinson, physical therapist will assist us with a twelve (12) week program to get healthy, lose weight and get fit. You will receive a fitness evaluation, a body age functional assessment, health risk assessment, blood work both at the begin-ning and end of the challenge, various health tests, a health coach who will call you every week, nu-tritional education, healthy eating to not only loose weight but to stay healthy and fit at the same time. The cost of this twelve (12) week program is $100. Think of all the gyms we have joined and didn’t get any of these things. everything will be done right here at Del Tura.

This includes all tests, blood work, etc. that I listed. We would like Del Tura residents to become the healthiest people in the county. It’s always more fun to do a program like this with friends and we’ve thrown in a challenge to Tara Woods to make it even more fun. Give Jay Flanagan or myself a call to be part of this program. Ummmmm---

I wonder if Dr. Sal can help with J.D.’s diet. (J.D. is my two year old rescue cat.) At twenty-one pounds, I could use him to lift weights. I wonder if they have treadmills for cats.

Monday, February 11, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. our An-nual Members HOA Board Meeting will take place. Please try and attend. The new HOA Board will be introduced and changes to the By-Laws will be voted upon. Our person and couple of the year will also be announced. Come and get to know your Board mem-bers. Their job is to help provide social, recreational and civic activities for Del Tura residents. They also act as a liaison between residents and management of Del Tura. Any matter which may be of interest or concern to residents, including the purchase of the community is handled by the Board.

Just a few reminders: • The 16 mph speed limit is for the safety of ev-

eryone.• Children under 16 are not allowed to drive golf

carts. (I know it looks like fun, but it is dangerous.)• Dogs and cats are NeVeR allowed on the golf

course.• Do not walk, ride bikes, walk your dog or cat,

drive your golf cart on the golf course paths (un-less you are playing), during the day time. This is DANGeROUS!!!! None of the golfers in D.T. are on the tour. Most of us are always surprised to see where our golf balls go. For your Safety - Stay off the course unless you are playing.

• Our Golf cart paths are NOT a nature walk or forest preserve—they are part of the game of golf and used to get from one hole to another. You would not meander across the tennis court during a match or take a short cut across the bocce ball court or shuffleboard court? Who would ever cut through a horseshoe game during play?! Respect our golfers playing their game, (they pay a lot of money to play) and stay safe. No one wants anyone to get hurt.

• There are many exciting events coming up in February: The International Food Fair, Profession-al Shows, The Del Prado’s, the Men and Women’s Member-Guest Tournaments, Valentine Day Dance, our wonderful Play---these are just a few of the events for February.

• Don’t forget to sign up for the Del Tura Chal-lenge and get fit, healthy and stay functional. (I’ll keep you updated on J.D. and my progress).

Have a healthy and fun February. I’ll see you at coffee.

The Del Tura HOA, Inc. by-laws have not been updated since 2005. After review by a resident committee, our attorney of record, and the HOA Board of Directors, the by-law revisions were prepared for review by the membership.

In January, copies of the recom-mended revision of the Del Tura HOA, Inc. by-laws were made available on the Del Tura HOA website, in the HOA office, and at Tuesday Morning Coffee. Both the existing text and the recom-mended changes are indicated in the document.

The recommended changes will be voted upon in their entirety.

• A Yes vote will approve all of the recommended changes;

• A No vote will veto the chang-es, leaving the by-laws in the origi-nal 2005 state.

At the February 11, 2013 Mem-bers Meeting:

• HOA members will be asked to present their HOA membership card, and will be given a ballot to complete during the meeting. Bal-lots must be deposited into the bal-lot box provided.

• HOA members who are unable to attend the February 11, 2013 meeting may present their HOA membership card to volunteers in

Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Collections

By Charlene Ruotolo Betty & Dave Scheetz

This year the Basket Charity Program was even more success-ful then we could have anticipated. We always knew this was one of the most giving communities not only with your donations, but with the overwhelming volunteer ef-fort that makes programs like this possible. You showed it this year again. Betty and Dave Scheetz should be given special thanks for running the Basket Program in my absence; my husband and I were in Illinois greeting our 1st

grandchild, Kyle. Betty and Dave not only ran the Basket Program but made an endless number of program improvements that will help make this a more successful program in the future. What better sense of enjoyment than helping less fortunate families during the Holidays. But without you won-derful people, that are so giving, it would not be possible. Give your-self a round of applause.

We provided food and gifts to forty-six (46) less fortunate fami-lies this year and as you can see from the financials (shown below) the Basket Program is positioned

to helping a larger number of families next year, hopefully into the 70’s. For those of you that do not know, we provide complete Thanksgiving and Christmas Din-ners as well as Christmas gifts for everyone in each family. I would like to mention that we were Very Fortunate to be able to obtain gifts at very deep discounts this year. Gift costs were approximately one half of what they cost us last year.

Again our heart felt thanks to everyone who donated to the holi-day collection and to all the volun-teers that collected, wrapped and packed the baskets.

DEL TURA Del Tura’s Got Talent

We’ve got good news and bad news....

The bad news is that we are not going to be putting on a talent show this coming March. We really ap-preciate all the people who signed up or showed interest in the show. Thank you.

The good news is we are going to have a great show next year...March of 2014. Why, you ask? Well, one reason is that we have a new resident in Del Tura named Bob Harmon. He has so much to offer that we want to get him in-volved. Let me tell you about him...

Bob has been a professional comic for 33 years. He was part of a three-man team called “She-nanigans”. You could have seen him in such places as Las Vegas, Atlantic City and even evansville, Indiana! When asked, Bob said he “. . . worked with Debbie Reynolds, Jim Nabors, the Smothers Brothers

and even . . . TINY TIM!!” He has entertained on cruise ships for many of those 33 years.

So, now he has retired to Del Tura. With only two m o n t h s until the show was supposed to go on, it would not be enough time to use all the resources he can supply. So, we have made the decision that with his wealth of knowledge (and lots of great skit ideas) we should wait until next season to put on the show. Also we will get a weekend that isn’t on St. Patrick’s Day, etc.

Thank you for understanding. It is our goal to put on the best show possible, using our own Del Tura people. We promise it will be worth the wait. Have a great season!

DEL TURA

By Dianne Roderick

Remember those Nor’easters, and the blizzards that seemed to last for days! It’s hard to imagine the stark realities of those winters we spent as children, especially now that we are living here in Par-adise. Winters were filled spend-ing special times with our siblings and friends; romping in the snow, sledding, ice skating, building snowmen-or snow families, and how about those snowball fights? So much fun! We never tired, or complained of being cold!

Ahhh….those January times of our youth! The storms seemed to last for days-drifts were higher than the windows and the roofs of our homes. Anxiously we would wait for the go ahead sign from our parents. Bundled up to our ears, it’s a wonder we could bend over at all! My brothers and I would waddle, or race each other out the door. Who would be the first to land into the newly fallen snow as a snow angel? Those were impor-tant decisions to make. That was our world then….So much fun!!

Building a snowperson (very important to stay politically cor-rect these days) was a very impor-tant decision. First we needed to see if the snow was worthy of such a task. Then there was the deci-

sion of who would be responsible for the head, mid-section, or the bottom? Don’t forget the branch-es for the arms and buttons for the eyes and mouth. A carrot for the nose, and of course, no snowman would be complete without the finishing touches of the scarf, top hat, etc.? BIG DeCISIONS!!

Later in the day we would ven-ture up the hill with our sleds to the schoolyard. Below the school-yard were three separate hills, perfect for sledding! The streets that surrounded those hills were closed off by the city with wooden horses and fire bomb torches. We sledded for hours- some of us on our sleds, toboggans, coasters, and even homemade sleds made out of cardboard boxes. There was a strong sense of security and safety back then. A strong feeling of go ahead have fun, be kids…play, laugh, don’t worry about to-morrow. Just have fun and make beautiful childhood memories. And we did! Those were truly the child centered times of our lives!!

Ice skating was another ac-tivity that we certainly enjoyed throughout those winter months. Our community firemen would flood the ponds at each of the local parks as soon as the temperatures dropped. The snow began to wear down but the temperatures would

always stay well below freez-ing. We were so lucky to have a pond complete with a warming house about a half mile from our home. I remember running home from school with my brothers. We would hurry to get our chores done. Then we would grab our skates and head for the pond.

There with in that warming house we were greeted by a roar-ing fire- always welcoming and glowing, with wooden benches for us to enjoy a steaming cup of hot chocolate –and don’t forget those marshmallows! Before you know it we were out on the ice again, whipping around and around un-til we were dizzy! I don’t think any of us could ever come close to a Sonja Henie, or a Dick Button, but we tried. For some reason we couldn’t even resemble graceful…but we certainly had fun!

As Snowbirds, we can all agree that the seasons up north were very well marked and felt by all of us. Outside of calendar reminders, be-ing here during the winter months, there are a few times that we actu-ally feel a significant change from fall to winter. The memories of our youth and holiday visits re-mind us of those fun-filled days that we spent as children…Thank God for the Memories!

to rate the importance of friend-ship in their lives and they’ll put it on the top of their list. As we age, priorities seem to rearrange them-selves. We have our homes and cars and now health and friend-ships take center stage. One way to acquire new friendships is to volunteer with the FISH program. Remember one day you too may need FISH help. Please come and join us. Not everyone finds the right volunteer program to match talents and personality, that’s why (FISH) Friends in Service Here is the right fit for you. To join, see us at coffee hour or call our num-ber 997-FISH or 997-3474.

~ Year in Review ~

Leaving the Board after 3 years of service are Ruth Ann Blevins, Joanne Nitka, and Mary Ann Hod-er. We appreciate and thank you for your commitment to the FISH Board and to the residence of Del Tura.

The FISH election has not taken place as I write this, by the time you read your February “Tower”, all will be decided. Come to coffee hour on February 5 and meet your

new FISH Board members. As I look back over the past

year I find so many volunteers making life a little better for our home owners and renters here in Del Tura. We have provided 185 pieces of medical equipment, many hours of service were given by Rich Symes, Neil Miller and Rick Rudzik. Sunshine helpers, Ruth Anten sent 346 get well and thinking of you cards. Lynn ever-ett sent 90 thank you letters. Sue Symes and her helpers delivered 54 baskets over the holidays. Let’s not forget our fruit picking project 2½ Tons of fruit was delivered to area Soup Kitchens, Co-chaired by Rick Rudzik and Sherry Plisch. There are also 24 plus volunteers that helped look for our FISH sun catchers in the fruit trees. The Flu Clinic organized by Ruth Donges,

made sure that 250 Del Tura resi-dents had their flu shots. Ruth has headed the clinic for the past 12 years.

Our thanks goes out to Gail Reeve who resigned in December 2012, Gail has been head of Trans-portation for the last 3 years. She was in charge of our nine Bookies (the telephone people who get you a driver). Ginnie Benjamins, Caro-lyn Cole, Marlene De Graaf, Liz Flanagan, Rich Keen. Val Moreau, Gail Reeve, Sue Symes, Gail Ven-tura and Lynn everett did the to-tal 250 rides plus 141 other calls total 391 served. Thanks to all our transportation drivers. (Some of you have been volunteering for 10 years.) Words cannot express how much you are appreciated. Not only FISH but all of Del Tura is grateful to Betty Scheetz, for FISH she organizes and updates every volunteer form, and records ev-eryone’s hours monthly. Betty also was head of the HOA Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas collection and deliveries for the less fortunate. She is definitely Del Tura’s vol-unteer of the year. Many thanks to all our volunteers who delivered meals made home visits and made Birthday calls.

This is an historical thriller telling the dramatic story of the events leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in the spring of 1865 and the aftermath in hunting for the conspirators. The Civil War scenes of the final battles before surrender, as well as the events and plans leading up to the as-sassination itself, are so vivid and gripping it is al-most like being there.

President Lincoln’s generous terms of the South’s surrender is meant to fulfill Lincoln’s dream of healing our divided nation. However, one man and his accomplices, perhaps reaching up to the highest ranks of our government, will not allow this to happen.

John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin, is a tal-ented, charismatic actor. He is handsome and a ladies’ man, but is a rabid racist. Others were in-volved in the plot to kill Lincoln and several other

high ranking officials at the same time. Details of the other assassination attempts were a compelling part of the story.

After the assassination, a manhunt ensues to find Booth by a smart, but shifty, New York detec-tive and former Union spy. His hunt ends in a fiery shootout, killing Booth. Federal forces are also sent out to track down Booth’s accomplices. After cap-ture and a trial, four conspirators were hanged and four were sentenced to prison. One of those hanged was a woman, the first woman to ever be executed by the U.S. government. Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865 and four conspirators were hanged on July 7th, less than three months later. Amazingly swift justice!

This is a book that is hard to put down and is a stirring depiction of one of the most important events in the history of our country.

The holidays have come and gone and all of our snowbirds are arriving in Del Tura. We wish ev-eryone a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Our Christmas seminar was a great success. Some of the new folks who joined us are now work-ing on new projects. everyone is welcome to join us by dropping by the Ceramic Room Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and see what is happen-ing.

Because of the success of the last class we will be having another one doing projects for spring and the easter Holiday. You will have many things to choose from such as an adorable garden figurine or perhaps an easter basket with multi colored ceramic eggs. If you are in-terested, as before, just come into ceramics and sign up for the class. You can finish the project in one

morning and we will have it ready for you to pickup within a few days. The class will be held Mon-day, February 18, at 10:00 a.m. the approximate cost is $12.00 and in-cludes everything you will need. Some of the projects you might like to do will be on display in our windows in the Ceramic Room. Come by and take a peek at them.

We also have assistance this year from a Del Tura resident who had her own business and is a cer-tified ceramics teacher. I know she will have many great and new tech-niques to show us.

Finally, we would like to thank Ruth Ann Blevins for all the help she gave us during the past summer months. She kept the kilns fired up and running so everyone could continue their projects.

We look forward to a great year and if you have any questions feel free to call Janet Ragone, our Presi-dent at 543-7818 or myself, Dianne Bevilacqua, Treasurer at 567-2234.

January 19 found many Del Turians in the Starlight Ballroom enjoying the music of Katie Brooks and the comedy of Harley Worthit. Many commented that they like a show that has a blend of comedy and mu-sic. Cathy Wallace, Chairperson of the entertainment Committee, welcomes feedback from those attending our shows so that future shows can be planned based on your input. Several members of the entertainment Committee recently attended a Showcase at Herons Glen to sample some of the acts that are available to us in the future.

During February, "the month of love," there will be two performances that we hope you will love. On February 9, at 7:00 p.m. Suzi Cruz and Don Townsend, "The Mentalist," will star in a show once again featuring both song and comedy. Remaining tickets will be on sale February 5 at 7:30 a.m. before coffee. The price for a ticket is $16.00. Secondly, the ever-popular Del Prados will be harmonizing for one and all at the Valentine's Dance starting at 7:00 p.m. on February 16. Price of tickets for this dance will be $10.00, and remaining tickets can be purchased on February 5 and 12 at 7:30 a.m. before coffee.

On March 9 at 7:00 p.m., we will be treated to a show by Donna and Dunning who have appeared in Vegas, Atlantic City, and appeared as an opening act for The Judd’s, Kenny Rogers, and other major stars.

Donna and Dunning are multi-talented and integrate music, comedy and impersonations into their act. If your favorite is elvis, Cher, Dolly, or elton, come to this show, as they will bring them along. Tickets go on sale for this show on Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30 a.m. in the Starlight Ballroom for HOA mem-bers only the first day of sales, and remaining tickets will be available to all on February 26 and March 5 starting at 7:30 a.m. The price of a ticket is $16.00.

"All aboard!" Join The Southern express at the Green Dance, held on March 15 at 7:00 p.m., in the Starlight Ballroom. Paul and Jim play a variety of music - "not just country and western." From Sinatra to elvis, rock and roll to disco, The Southern express will lead you down the tracks. So, hop on board, and enjoy! Buy your tickets at the "station" - the Starlight Ballroom beginning at 7:30 a.m. on February 26. The first day of sales is HOA members only. Remaining tickets will be sold starting at 7:30 a.m. on February 5 and 12 and will be open to all. The tickets for this event are $5.00.

Contact Cathy Wallace for additional information, with any questions, ticket requests, etc., at 731-1092. All these performances are HOA sponsored, and there is a no-refund policy in place.

As you can see, there are many opportunities to share a laugh, enjoy some music, and/or click your heels right here in our community in the next few months. Hope to see you there!

DEL TURA SPORTSDEL

TURA Del Tura AmigosBy Jay Flanagan

The Del Tura Amigos opened the season in Cape Coral’s Mark Ford Senior Men’s Softball League with two hard fought wins over Sabal Springs and an excellent Lake Fairways team. Both wins were a product of great defense and very timely hitting.

On the first night, after an impressive opening ceremonies that included the introduction of the teams, the presentation of the colors and the singing of the Nation Anthem, introduction of the Mark Ford League officers, remembrances of league players who have died in the past year and Del Tura’s Mary Ford (wife of the late Mark Ford for whom the league is named) throwing out the first pitch, it was great defense from Joe Angelilli at sec-ond base and third baseman Mike Stark that sparked the win. The final 8 to 1 score was highlighted offensively by Rick Bourquin’s triple with the bases loaded and followed by a long two run home run by Craig Lindahl. Rick An-taya and Dave Denman also led the hit parade.

The season’s second game fea-tured a great come from behind win. Lake Fairways jumped on the Amigos in the first inning by scoring three runs and continued to hold a 6-2 advantage until the top the 7th and last inning. After

two outs, Joe Angelilli singled, Mike Stark’s hard ground ball to short resulted in everyone being safe, Jerry Beiermann singled to load the bases and Rick Antaya followed with another single driv-ing in our third run. This brought Rick Bourquin to the plate whose home run scored the Amigos first run and Rick came through with his second homerun of the game, a grand slam, making the score 7-6 Amigos.

This didn’t end the suspense, however, as Lake Fairways still had to bat in the bottom of the 7th. The first two men that came to bat singled putting runners on 1st and 2nd. A long fly to left was cor-ralled by Donnie Vadeboncouer leaving 1st and 2nd still occupied. A walk loaded the bases and one of their top hitters was coming to bat. Tom Walsh’s pitch induced a hard ground ball toward left field on which shortstop Rick Bour-quin scooped up, flipped to Jerry Beiermann for the force and the relay to Lou Picciuto at first was in time to complete the double play and end the game.

The Amigos continue to play each Monday and Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. through the month of March at the Northwest Softball Complex off Chiquita in Cape Coral.

Your attendance and support at the games is greatly appreciated.

18-Hole Women’s Golf AssociationDEL TURA

By Carol Marra

2013 starts with a lot of sig-nificant news. In November we had a three day Club champion-ship Tournament in which Brenda Sharp became Club Champion defeating Paula LaFreniere on the first hole of sudden death. In December we had our Member-Member and the first place win-ners for each flight are as follows: (A) Paula LaFreniere and Joyce Cuffe (B) Brenda Sharpe and Jere Mangrum (C) Jane Glancy and Bernice Stead. This January 9, 2013, nine Members of our As-sociation went to Pine Lakes and seven won! Paula was number one over all.

Now there are many events to look forward to. In January we had a variety of Thursday games

starting with “Mutt and Jeff” on the 3rd, (No, not tall players with their more petite friends!!). It is 9 holes; 5 of our longest and 4 of our shortest. We also played “throw out one hole before you start”. This is especially good when you are feeling the challenge of 5 North! One week was ABCD - mixed flights in a scramble. The 18-Hole Women’s Association also sponsors the Valentine tour-nament (February 14 and 21) and the Member-Guest on February 28.

We are not always serious on the golf course but we are serious about enjoying golf, learning the rules (at least the ones we can un-derstand!) and helping each other to have the best round of golf pos-sible.

Advice for the month: If you are off the green and are not a good chipper you are probably better off with your putter. (I know Ryan doesn’t agree but Marty Riley has a big smile on her face!) However, if you would like to learn to chip, putt or hit that new hybrid you have been carrying around since last Christmas, there are group and private lessons available. See the Pro Shop for more information.

Most of all remember what Harry Penick said in his book (Lit-tle Red Book) on golf:

“A husband should never teach his wife to drive a car or play golf and she should never try to teach him to play bridge”. Keep the peace and have a good time on the course!

This issue of “The Tower” finds us two months into 2013. By the time this article is published, the Club Championship will have taken place on January 16 and 17. Results and winners of this tour-nament will be submitted in the

March issue of “The Tower”. Our Annual Christmas Lun-

cheon was held on December 13. As usual, our Social Chair, Gail Reeve, planned an enjoyable event. The lunch was delicious; the entertainment - the beauti-ful singing voice of Joan Leydon with accompanying piano music -

lovely; and the gift exchange, com-monly known as a “Yankee Swap”, fun and funny. Many award pins and cart name plaques were also presented for individual golf ac-complishments during the year. Congratulations to all winners!

Two other major events sched-uled for February and early March are the Couples’ Valentine Scram-ble on February 13 (changed from the 14) and the Del Tura Invita-tional on March 7. In addition to these events being announced at the weekly tournament play, mem-bers are reminded to regularly re-view published announcements in the “dungeon” to obtain the details for participation in these events.

New members are always wel-come to join the Nine-Hole Wom-en’s Golf Association at any time during the year. Don’t hesitate to contact Marlene DeGraaf at 599-4404 for more information.

PLANNING FOR LONG-TERM CARELong-term care includes medical and non-medical care for people who have a chronic illness or disability. Non-medical care includes non-skilled personal care assistance, such as help with everyday activities, like dressing, bathing, and using the bathroom. At least 70% of people over 65 will need long-term care services at some point. Medicare and most health insurance plans, including Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies don’t pay for this type of care, also called “custodial care.” Medicare only pays for medically-necessary skilled nursing facility care or home health care if you meet certain conditions. Long-term care can be provided at home, in the community, in assisted living, or in a nursing home. It’s important to start plan-ning for long-term care now to maintain your independence and to make sure you get the care you may need in the future.

PAYING FOR LONG-TERM CARELong-term Care Insurance – This type of private insurance policy can help pay for many types of long-term care, including both skilled and non-skilled (custodial) care. Long-term care insurance can vary widely. Some policies may cover only nursing home care. Others may in-clude coverage for a range of services, like adult day care, assisted living, medical equipment, and informal home care. Note: Long-term care insurance doesn’t replace your Medicare coverage. Your current or former employer or union may offer long-term care insurance. Current and re-tired Federal employees, active and retired members of the uniformed services, and their qualified relatives can apply for coverage under the Federal Long-term Care Insurance Program. Personal Resources – You can use your savings to pay for long-term care. Some insurance companies let you use your life insurance policy to pay for long-term care. ASK YOUR INSURANCE AGENT HOW THIS WORKS.

Other Private Options – Besides long-term care insurance and personal resources, you may choose to pay for long-term care through a trust or annuity. The best option for you depends on your age, health status, risk of needing long-term care, and your personal financial situation. (Taken from the 2012 Medicare & You Handbook)

Friday Shuffleboard leagueDEL TURA

By Jack Blevons

Writing this today, Jan. 11, we just finished week nine of our 18 week league. We reached the half-way mark today. Can’t believe how fast the weeks are flying by. By the time you read this, another three weeks of playing will have passed. We had another gorgeous

day to play, warm temps with a nice breeze. The standings af-ter today’s games are as follows. The “A” flight leaders are: Ben Hargraves/Bob Crawford in 1st place at 24/3; Pete Slusarski/Doris Thurber at 23/4 in 2nd place fol-lowed by Jack/Janet Blevons in 3rd place at 20/7. The “B” flight leaders are: Donna Crawford/

Len Fleming at 19/8 followed by Stan Peters/Don Mummert at 17/10 and in 3rd place are Mollie Brown/ellen Slusarski at 14/13. As you can see, the races in both flights are still tight. That’s the way our league goes. The sea-son usually goes right down to the wire when it ends in March. I would like to take this chance to thank all those people who are playing as subs this season. I can’t tell you how important you are to our league as there isn’t a Friday that goes by that we don’t have subs playing for regulars who aren’t able to play for one rea-son or another. When we played our games today we had 11-subs playing for regulars. Without you people, trying to correlate the games today would have been a nightmare for me. I also want to remind all those who sub, that in March, when we have our an-

nual Bust-Up Party, all of you and your spouses or significant others are also invited to attend and join in on the fun. That will be held on March 29 in the “Royal Palm” Ballroom, so mark your calen-dars. It runs from 12:00-4:00 p.m. One last thing I want to bring up is, about a week ago; I found four (4) broken push sticks in the shuf-fleboard shack. I’ve been playing this game for over 15 years and have never seen any of these bro-ken while our league plays. So, I don’t understand how they get broken if they are used in the way they are supposed to be used. I ask you please, if you bring guests, friends, or visiting kids down there to play, please be sure that our equipment is used in a manner that it was intended. Don’t throw things around, don’t bang them on the courts and don’t use them as baseball bats. This equipment

costs money both to repair or re-place. We appreciate Hometown in maintaining our courts and pro-viding us with necessary equip-ment for repairs so we can all en-joy using the courts and enjoy the game of shuffleboard. We have a Travel League that plays every Wednesday during the months of January through March and also our 20-team Friday League, which plays every Friday starting in late October through March. I also know we have other groups who play on Tuesdays and Thurs-days, so we have a lot of people who enjoy the game of shuffle-board, so I am asking everyone, enjoy playing, but please respect our equipment and treat it as your own. Thank you. See you again in the March Tower.

Christmas Golf Cart Parade

DEL TURA

By “The Cousins” (Sue Savitt and Deb Winsor)

Sue: Good Morning, Cousin

Deb: Good Morning, Cousin

Sue: Can’t wait to see pictures of the Golf Cart Parade in the Tower this month. The weather was perfect. Carts were decorated so cre-atively.

Deb: I still can’t believe that there were 40 carts in the parade, and over 100 people were at the Cocktail Party prior to the event.

Sue: The appetizers were great, and everyone seemed to be having fun during our contests and drawings.

Deb: What a great committee we had. They really rolled up their sleeves and pitched in. They even agreed to appear in our skits at Cof-fee Hour.

Sue: Yes, Ron “Zoom Zoom” Raming, Ron “Light Man” Winsor, Chick “Diva” Brown, Walt “Turkey” (alias Santa Claus) Brown, Bill “Smirnoff” Harris, Joan “Joanika” Wanamaker, Betty “Catering Coor-dinator” Scheetz, and Dave “Does in All” Scheetz, did great jobs.

Deb: Don’t forget how supportive were the HOA Board, Wolfgang and Teresita Weber, Doris Myer, Barbara Boyd, Dave Jacobs, Henry Moreau, and, of course, our mentor Molly Walker who gave us the information and encouragement to put it all together.

Sue: Talk about support. The Del Tura residents, their families, guests, and dogs, lined the streets and cheered us all on. My Mom and Dad had paddles which they raised as the carts went by giving everyone a well-deserved “10.”

Deb: Cousin, I just opened my mail and we won an all-expense trip to Hawaii for the month of December 2013.

Sue: Are you kidding! We would miss the Del Tura Golf Cart Parade. Deb: I wouldn’t even consider doing that. I’ve already started to think of the theme for my cart next year.

Sue: You have to be kidding.

Deb: I am. Gotcha!

Both: Thanks again to everyone involved. See you in December.

Meet Your NeighborDEL TURA

By Mary RichardsonA childhood spent in war torn england, a move to

Canada as a young wife and mother, then immigra-tion to another country, the USA (Pennsylvania), and finally retirement years in Del Tura in sunny Florida – this is the journey JeAN CORNWeLL of Sierra Madre has made during her lifetime.

Jean was born in Uxbridge, Middlesex and moved to Southampton as a baby. Her mother had a little private school in the house but when she was about seven, she and her brother went to the public school. When World War II started the family had to move out of Southampton as the ships there were a prime target for German bombs. All the children over five years of age had to be evacuated and went to live with families in the Bournemouth area. Jean and her brother didn’t go for a while because they had mumps. After a few unsuc-cessful moves, Jean’s mother rented a house for the three of them but then she decided to go back to South-ampton in case their father came home. Because he was in the Merchant Navy and very little communi-cation was available the family had no idea about his whereabouts or even if he was still alive.

Jean and her brother were placed in separate homes for a while but when the war ended the family all returned to Southampton and the children went to Grammar Schools there. The family had no car and Jean and her brother rode their second-hand bikes to the swimming pool. even at a young age Jean enjoyed sewing and made stuffed dolls and toy dogs for children who had no toys.

eventually Jean was accepted at the Gipsy Hill Teachers’ Training College at Kingston-on-Thames in Surrey and went on to teach first grade in South-ampton and then nursery school in Kingston. In 1951 she married and moved to Canada with her husband. She worked for the City of Toronto in the nursery schools and then taught Kindergarten in Rexdale, Ontario until just before her first daughter Roberta was born. Later the family moved to Penn-sylvania and her second daughter Wendy was born in Secane, PA.

After Jean’s husband died she met Dick Cornwell, a patent attorney, who attended the same church she did in Wilmington De. He also had lost his spouse and was the father of two daughters. They were married in 1978. Jean became the social director in

a nursing home in Wilmington. Later she and Dick both went into the real estate business affiliating with Century 21.

Two other couples who were friends of theirs from church moved to Del Tura and the Cornwells decided to visit them. They liked what they saw and bought property here in 1985 having their home built the following year. This was in the original part of our community before the northern area was

developed. The main club-house was built but not the additions and there was only one nine-hole golf course. There was a snack bar where the present kitchen is in the Starlight Ballroom and the restaurant was where the Pub now is. eventu-ally a swimming pool was installed directly in front of their home and this has al-ways been the heart of their close-knit neighborhood.

Dick died in 2004 follow-ing a three and a half year illness, but Jean continues today to be active in the La-

dies Nine-Hole Golf League and visits the pool dai-ly. All her life Jean has enjoyed working on crafts, sewing, bird carving, doll making and ceramics and still finds time to participate in these activities. The picture shows her with her collection of birds which she has carved herself. When her daughters were growing up she made all their clothes. She has participated in the Del Tura Craft Fairs for the last twenty-five years displaying several tables of hand-made knit items such as sweaters, caps and scarves. She has assisted with our Trash and Treasures sales and still finds time to play canasta and mahjong with groups here. She also is active at All Souls episco-pal Church and volunteers in their Thrift Shop. In addition to that, she picks up the canned goods col-lected here each week at our Bingo games and takes them to the church’s Outreach Program. She even finds time to play dominoes with a group from the church.

Because Jean values the time she is able to spend with her family which now includes nine grandchil-dren and six great-grandchildren scattered through-out Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia, she joins them every year at Rehoboth Beach, De for a family reunion. About thirty people attend the weeklong event.

This longtime resident of Del Tura has made many contributions to our community and we are pleased to call her “a good neighbor”.

WALLIS SIMPSON – ROYAL OBSESSIONTHE LOVE SCANDAL THAT ROCKED THE EMPIRE“That Woman,” as Queen Mary called Wallis, was the most infamous woman of her time. Just mention her name at a party and you’ve stirred up a hotbed of interest. Everyone has an opinion. What magical hold did Wallis have on Edward VIII that he abdicated the throne of England to marry her? Did she even want to be Queen? And why did the roy-als at Buckingham Palace despise her so?

People will forget what you did, what you said,

but they will never forget how you made them feel.

DEL TURA Good Timers Singles News

By Susan Savitt

A smiling face, an “up” atti-tude, a great sense of humor, are attributes that we do not forget in people because they make us feel good. We have several people in the Good Timers who exhibit these attributes. One who comes to mind immediately is Millie Hanrahan. Millie says the motto she lives by is “Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.” She is originally from Chicago, has six children, and is always looking forward to her next cruise. She has lived in Del Tura nineteen years, loves golf, bowling, Mah Jong, Red Hat activities, and, of course, Good Timers activities. Millie re-cently celebrated her 80th birth-day, which is hard to believe. She says her life is very full and very happy and having her as a friend makes us all feel happy as well.

We are so pleased that Peg Mc-Ternan agreed to be president of the Good Timers “once more.” Peg has done a wonderful job, and like Millie, is a person who makes you

feel good to be around. The other officers are esther Kuntz and Joan Whaley, co-vice presidents; Debo-rah Alt and Winnie Guzowski, co-secretaries, and Louise Dodge, treasurer.

At the January meeting, we were pleased to welcome new member, Sue Highfill, and wel-come back Lorna Callan.

Thanks to the Good Timers members who took part in the Del Tura Golf Cart parade. Peg represented the Good Timers and rode with Walter “Santa Claus” Murphy. Other members who par-ticipated were Alice Harris, Gerri Camburn, Anna Wilson, Kath-leen Quigley, esther Kuntz, Judy Fehrman, Barbara Boyd, and Jan VanAmburg. It was my pleasure to co-chair this year’s event, and thank the Good Timers for their participation,

The January birthdays of Marge Applebaum and Millie Hanrahan, and the February birthday of Irene West, as well as the birthdays of members who are not here dur-ing the summer, will be celebrat-

ed during the month of February. Date, time and place will be shared at the February 5th meeting.

One of the Good Timers yearly favorite activities is the Interna-tional Food Fair. The group has hosted the American Booth for several years. We always select an American theme, sometimes a food, such as apples, oranges, etc., or a state. We have featured foods representing New York, Texas, California, Florida, and Massa-chusetts. You will have to stop by our booth on Saturday, February 2 at 5:00 p.m. to find out what this year’s delicacies will be. Okay, a hint: everyone will get a kiss.

Be sure to plan to see our Lou-ise Dodge performing in “Luxury Cruise,” which will be presented on February 21, 22, and 23rd. Louise Dodge always gives a bra-vo performance, and she tells us that this play is hilarious. See you there.

At the February 5 meeting, we will have our annual Sweets Par-ty in memory of one of our past presidents and good friend, Lor-raine Greiner. Those attending are asked to bring a sweet to share to honor a lady who shared so much of her time, expertise, and friend-ship with the people of Del Tura.

Also singles are welcome to join the Good Timers at any time of the year. To get the most from your dues, however, now is the time to join. You may join at the February 5 meeting at the club-house at 5:00 p.m. or call mem-bership chairperson, Pat Clemens at 567-0716.

May your friends make you happy, and may you make them feel good as well, this month and always.

Five Reasons Not to Be a “Do-It-Yourself” InvestorThese days, you can go online and invest, for modest fees. You can also visit various websites for research and watch numerous cable shows for investment recommendations. So, why shouldn’t you be a “do-it-yourself” investor rather than work with a financial professional?

Actually, there are at least five good reasons why a financial advisor can help make you a better investor.

A financial advisor can:

• Ask the right questions — If you try to invest on your own, you may find yourself asking the wrong questions, such as: “What’s the ‘hottest’ investment out there?” A financial professional can help frame better questions, such as: “Given my individual risk tolerance and long-term goals, which investments should I consider to help me build a balanced portfolio?” In other words, a financial profes- sional can help you ask the questions that can lead to better results.

• Look at your situation objectively — No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to take all the emotion out of your invest ment choices. After all, your investment success will play a large role in some key areas of your life, such as your ability to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Consequently, if you think you’re not making the progress you should with your investments, you may be tempted to make a hasty decision to give your portfolio a “jolt.” Frequently, though, such choices can backfire. When it comes to in- vesting, it’s better to invest with your head, not your heart. A financial advisor can analyze your situation, assess your risk tolerance and make appropriate recommendations.

• Show a deeper understanding of investment research — You can look up many types of financial data on your own. But do you know how to put all these pieces together into a cohesive picture? A financial professional, with years of experience and training, is generally more capable of finding the research sources and making the most sense out of the results.

• Put experience to work in making portfolio recommendations. Even if you’ve been investing for many years, you might be sur- prised at all the underlying influences that should go into making investment decisions. But a financial professional understands market patterns, the nature of diversification and other factors necessary in helping you make the right choices for your situation.

• Spend time looking for opportunities — Even if you enjoy the process of investing, the chances are quite good that you can’t spend as much time on it as a financial professional. That means, among other things, you aren’t constantly on the lookout for new investment opportunities. Nor are you always looking within your own portfolio for opportunities to rebalance or make other adjustments that can help you move forward toward your goals. But when you work closely with a financial advisor, he or she is exploring the financial markets for new investment prospects while regularly reviewing your portfolio for possibilities of upgrading quality, increasing diversification or making adjustments in response to changes in your life.

The “do-it-yourself” route may be fine for home repairs. But when it comes to managing your investment situation, there are benefits to working with a professional.

HEALTH NEWS

Just because the nights seem longer and darker, it’s no excuse to oversleep.

Maintain an average of seven to nine hours of sleep nightly as this not only helps reduce your chances of weight gain, but also helps pre-vent conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Also be sure you’re getting

enough Vitamin D. With less sun-ny hours our bodies produce less Vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones, a healthy immune system and heart disease preven-tion.

Slow down and stretch. Re-gardless of age or flexibility level, stretching is something that can always be added to your daily

routine. Start by doing simple stretches while watching TV, on the computer, and even getting ready for bed. Adding a few min-utes of stretching to your day en-hances muscular coordination and increases blood circulation and energy levels. Stretching can also help you relax, as it acts as a natu-ral stress reliever.

DEL TURA Stop Singing the Winter Blues

By Jack Dunigan

On Thursday, January 10, a pool of talent flowed into the Jacaranda Room as fourteen Del Turians met to discuss what they’ve written, what they would like to write, and how to be better at their craft. In a short time, the group decided to make Del Tura the permanent home of a writers group.

The group will meet twice a month during season and once a month during the summer. The February meetings are on February 5 and 19 in the Jacaranda room. The meetings will begin at approximately

10:00 am following the Tuesday morning Coffee Hour and last approximately an hour.

All writers are welcome whether they have pub-lished anything or not. The only requirement is a desire to be better at the craft and to help others. Support groups to meet throughout the month are forming for various genres of writing – historical fic-tion, memoirs, non-fiction, mysteries, and more. The group plans to publish an annual anthology, sponsor writing contests, schedule guest speakers, and build a website. Inquiries may be made to Jack Dunigan at 239-599-4221 or [email protected].
