The New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital was organized by the Post-Graduate Medical Faculty of the University of the City of New York on the 4th of April 1882 The announcement of the names of its officers and of its clinics was made in the Medical Record of August 19th of that year The sessions were opened on the evening of November 4th 1882 at a meeting held in Chickering Hall on Fifth Avenue corner of Eighteenth Street and the clinics began the following morning This history shows that our school is the oldest Post-Graduate Medical School in this country and that any claim to this distinction from any other College is not well founded The school is a part of the University of the State being under the general supervision and control of the Regents of the University It has a special charter granted by the Legislature of the State The number of physicians attending the school the last year has been greater than were ever before enrolled in this College and much larger than that of any similar Institution in the United States The work of the Institution is conducted almost enshytirely under the roof of the Post-Graduate School Consequently no time is lost in going about to attend the clinics The school is adapted bothfor specialists and general practitioners Those who

propose to confine themselves to some special part of medicine or surgery may procure tickets for these departments only and find their time amply occupied during the day but the general all-round practitioner who desires to refresh his knowledge and increase his experience in all departments of medicine and surgery wili find the general ticket with two special tickets added well adapted to his purpose It comprehends instruction in the operations on the cadaver work in the laboratory attendance on the clinics and dispensary and bedside instruction everything in short which the general practitioner wishes to know The Post-Graduate Faculty endeavors to arrange the courses so that every practitioner may find what he desires to study within its walls and that study is by means of clinics and demonstrations No so-called didactic lecshytures are given

During the year the Faculty has been strengthened by an adshyditional professorship in surgery one in orthopedic surgery and one in hydrotherapeutics but in the main it remains as in previous years New adjunct Professors in Medicine and Diseases of the Ear and one in Diseases of Women have been added the latter a lady of large experience whose services will be especially valued by the female practitioners who may attend the School

CHARACTER OF THE INSTRUCTION

The teaching of the School is entirely clinical or demonstrative Our hospital accommodations are so ample that practitioners

may witness several important operations each day and also see a large number of patients in the Dispensary besides the attendance upon clinics The Professors and Instructors who have patients in the Hospital are always ready to make their examinations and dressings in the presence of small numbers of the class Any practitioner is at liberty to make a request of the Professor for such an opportunity and he is asked not to wait to be invited but to make his wants known not only in this respect but in all others properly connected with his relations to the Institution

The practitioner is brought face to face with the patient and whenever it can be done without detriment to the recovery or well-

being of the patient he is allowed to personally examine the case for himself Bedside instruction also furnishes a prominent feature in this Institution both in the babies childrens and adults wards

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

None of the Professors or Instructors in the ]gt0 t-Graduate Medical School give private instruction elsewhere in the subjects which they teach in the Institution for the simple reason that the whole system in our College is one of private and personal instruction Whenever necessary the classes are divided into small sections so that they can be reached by individual demonstration If any matrishyculate wishes more than can be found on the schedule for special courses or on the general schedule arrangements can be made to that end by applying to the Superintendent It is believed howshyever that the faithful attendant at the clinics at the School who makes himself at home with the Professor or Instructor will want nothing more in the way of complete practical private instruction on the subjects in which he is interested than is here given

The matriculates of the School may depend upon regularly seeing the teachers in the places to which they are assigned on the schedule

LABORATORY

In the Laboratory of the Post-Graduate Medical School the most advanced instruction is given in Pathology Histology and Bacteriology Besides this the needs of the general practitioner are carefully attended to in the matter of microscopical examlOashytion of urine the blood and so forth

The Anatomical Rooms are exceptionally large and well adapted to their purpose Classes in Operative Surgery on the Cadaver are continuously formed and there is no interruption in their regular succession The arrangements are of the very best order in this department

pathology diagnosis and treatment of the diseases of the alimentary tract liver kidneys and general diseases It is essential to clearly understand the chemical and physiological principles that underlie and control all pathological processes if we are to most successfully treat disease Particular attention will therefore be given in the clinics to the elucidation of these essential problems

Every effort will be made to displace empirical and symptomshyatic therapeutics as much as possible and to replace them by such methods and treatment as are suggested through the advance in our knowledge obtained from a closer study of medical chemistry and bacteriology and the fixed laws of chemistry and physiology Espeshycial attention will be devoted to the study of the proper dietetic treatment of disease all of which will be fully demonstrated in connecshytion with the abundance of clinical material brought before the class

to the topographical anatomy of the thoracic and abdominal viscera and to the physical signs which are found in health as well as to those which are found in disease including their mode of production

attention to constitutional diseases such as gout rheumatism diabetes and so forth and diseases of the blood and ductless glands such as lukemia myxedema anemia Graves Disease etc Cases of abdominal tumors will also be shown and examined for diagnosis and treatment He will also give an occasional lecture on Clinashytology and the Use of Mineral Waters

HYDRO-THERAPEUTICS A course in hydrotherapeutics which has become such an important

factor in the treatment of disease has been instituted under the direcshytion of Professor Baruch The methods of using water in any form of disease to which it is applicable will be thoroughly demonstrated

SPECIAL COURSES IN DISEASES OF THE STOMACH Professor Einhorn will give lpecial courses in diseases of the

stomach twice during the season The first course will begin about October 1st and last for five weeks two lessons being given by Dr Einhorn in each week The second course will begin about April 1st The class will be limited to six The lessons will consist of newer methods of diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the stomach The fee for the course will be S30 which is not included in the general ticket Professors Quintard and Rose will also give instruction in general medicine both in the Clinics and Dispensary

The rooms for instruction in diseases of the Nose and Throat are exceedingly well adapted for their purposes and constitute one of the best equipped departments in the city Daily clinics are held at the School The work is very practical consisting entirely of demonstration of Diseases of the Nose and Throat in patients with proper medical or surgical treatment for each case carried out in the presence of the student When qualified students are allowed to perform some operations under the supervision of a Professor A course on Operative Surgery of the Nose and Throat including all operations on the Accessory Nasal Sinuses is given on the cadaver by Professor Beaman Douglass

Classes in which practical work may be done by the students are conducted two evenings each week at the School by Dr Sheedy especial attention being given to Laryngeal Technique
