Graded ditch section with vegetation removed.

    Completed lined ditch section

Lining the bottom of the ditch with the rst longitudinal layer of CC

    Batter prior to ditch excavation.

Lining the left side crest of the ditch

Part of the M1 junction 12 project involved the lining of a

320 linear metre top of batter V ditch to prevent seepage

and control water runoff. Concrete Canvas was specied

over traditional concrete solutions for this project due to site

limitations. The project was a success as the programme,

originally scheduled for completion in 3 weeks, was

completed in 5 days. Having used the product on previous

projects, I knew the speed and ease of installation would be

    of great advantage to us.

    Church Village Bypass

In 2009, Costain were appointed as the

main contractor for the 90M Church

    Village Bypass scheme in South

    Wales. This involved major ground

works including the installation of holding ponds

and an extensive surface drainage network. The

decision was made to use Concrete Canvas

(CC), after it was granted Environment Agency

    approval for the project.

Thanks to the ease and speed with which CC

is installed compared to traditional concrete

solutions the project, originally scheduled to

take 3 days, was completed in 45 minutes.

The Church Village Bypass scheme presented

our team with a unique challenge. The location

and nature of the works required the sensitive

    use of appropriate construction materials

in order to minimise the impact on the local

    environment. Concrete Canvas provided a

means of rapidly installing a low carbon concrete

ditch whilst maintaining the natural aesthetic of

    the overall scheme.

    CC5 was used to stabilise

    and protect a slope suffering

    from severe surface erosion

    and slip. The erosion

    threatened to destabilise a

road at the crest of the slope

    and damage housing at the

foot of the slope from falling

    debris.

Project site prior to CC installation, showing

    severe erosion.

CC was dispensed from a spreader beam,

allowing it to be laid at a rate of over 150m/day

Joints were overlapped by 100mm and xed withscrews at approximately 200mm intervals. CC was secured at the crest with a concretelled anchor trench.

Soil anchors and drainage pipes were installed

prior to laying CC, which was easily tailored

    around these features.

200x200mm steel plates were used to securethe CC to the slope face using the soil anchors.

    ongoing programme

    E n t e r p r i s e m o u c h e l

    needed to clear and repair

    an interceptor drain adjacent

to the M4, with a key project

    requirement to introduce a series

of cascades in order to reduce the

water ow rate. Originally a series

    of pipes and headwalls were

    considered but concerns over pipe

    blockages meant an alternative

    design was sought. CC provided

a solution that prevented erosion, suppressed weed growth and

    eliminated the maintenance issues

    associated with blocked pipes. CC

    enabled simple and cost effective

    cascades to be constructed using

    concrete bagwork, over which the

Canvas was easily laid. Due to the

size of the drain the Canvas was

laid across the width allowing a

20m section was laid by a team of

3 workers in only 1 day.
