Septic TanksYour District Council magazine in March has an article by the Environment Agency on reducing the nutrients reaching our rivers and we need your help. The water from Matlaske and some of Baconsthorpe drains to the Kings Beck then onto the River Bure. All the little pollutions from villages along the Bure route are adding together to affect the Bure Broads and Marshes near Wroxham, which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). These special areas for wildlife, and the rivers that lead to them, need low nutrients to support the full range of wildlife. Nutrients (particularly phosphates) can come from several sources including septic tanks and package treatment plants.

To help reduce the nutrients please desludge your septic tank or package treatment plant at least once a year (nutrients settle out in the sludge), change to phosphate free detergents and check that any septic tanks drain effectively into the land, rather than reaching the river. When your District council newsletter arrives, please read the article and take action to help the rivers and broads. If each household does a bit, we can make a big difference to the amount of nutrient entering our water environment.

Newsletters on lineIf you can’t find your Newsletter or would like to print your own or even let strangers take a peek then go to http://post.ly/3S2Ou

Have you noticedThere are often requests for help in the Community Diary pages. Please look out for them and get in touch with the organisers even if the events are not in the current month. Thanks.

Newsletter AdvertisersI’m pleased to announce that here has been a gradual increase in advertisements over the last year and I would urge you to consider what our advertisers are offering. Not only that but they enable our Newsletter to exist because they pay for the large part of the production costs. Thank you, advertisers.

Coffee & GossipThese events are contributing significantly to the funding of the Newsletter (£43 again in February). Thank you to all who support this venture and hope to see more of you there on 2nd March.

Thank you to our Distributors...For delivering the Newsletter to every household in the benefice.

Thank you to the anonymous sponsor of this edition of Village Diary & Newsletter

Thank you to everyone who has supported our Coffee & Gossip events in Hempstead – you help to keep our Village Diary & Newsletter solvent.

More help is needed – please see page 18. Next time it is on Friday, 3 Feb.

Call for ArticlesWe want this Newsletter to be really interesting and interactive. In some recent issues we have had delightful scribblings from T; Baconsthorpe history from Arthur, and the plight of Toad. But what can you tell us about? Gardening tips; history of our villages; favourite Norfolk walks? Please consider contributing to the April issue. Pictures are always welcome. Thanks. Ed

My dear friendsLent

Many people think that Lent is rather a miserable season in the Church’s year. Not a bit of it! It is, rather, a time to draw closer to God in a quiet and thoughtful frame of mind. We are having quiet, simple services on Wednesday evenings in Lent – each service will be at 7 pm at St Mary’s, Barningham Winter and lasts for about 45 minutes. They are listed above – do please come along if you possibly can – a warm welcome awaits you. I am particularly pleased that my old friend, Paul Ferguson, Archdeacon of Cleveland, is able to join us for the first Compline in Lent. Though usually I invite guest preachers for these services, this year I decided to share my own thoughts with you for all the services in March and hope you won’t mind too much! Finally, Jo and I thank you all very much indeed for your help and support while I was recovering from surgery.

God bless you all.

Baconsthorpe NewsCongratulations To Sarah and Oliver Husar of Stonefield Road, on the birth of their daughter Amber, born on Feb 3rd, weighing 7lb 11oz. Baconsthorpe Jubilee Exhibition Thank you so much to everyone who has offered to lend things for this exhibition. Following the EDP piece on the Coronation chairs we have now been approached by a village resident whose aunt embroidered the ‘ER’ on all the chairs and has lent us a sample piece. This is just the sort of thing we need to create what promises to be a fascinating exhibition. For further offers of help please contact 577263. Beetle Drive We had a very successful Beetle Drive. It was lovely to see so many people enjoying a good laugh. It is so much fun for all age groups. Baconsthorpe 200 Club £25 David Youngs; £10 Chris Gotts; £5 Rosemary Hardingham, John Hardingham. Milkman about 1940This picture shows Sydney Barrett writing in his book during a delivery in Baconsthorpe. The picture is in the possession of his niece, Jane-Elizabeth Tooke, who made contact after finding our newsletter on the internet. Sydney was born 1913 in Baconsthorpe and lived in the area all his life. He was buried in West Beckham in 1998. Jane-E’s mother was a teacher at Baconsthorpe School in the 1940s but most local people would have known her as Kathleen Wells from West Beckham. Does anyone remember the gift of a picture from pupils and staff given to her when she left in about 1946? She was very proud of it.

Whilst at the school she took the children on trips: boys for gardening and one trip for the girls to Baconsthorpe

Selbrigg Pond Thank you to all those that contacted me regarding Selbrigg Pond, as I said I am trying to rejuvenate the pond and to this end the trees along the bank are going to be coppiced. It is about 40 years since they were last cut and some are 20m tall now. The tree work is scheduled for 6 days towards the end of March and will mean long delays (at least 20 mins) on the road past the pond. Signs will be erected but my recommendation is to avoid the road completely. Please accept my apologies in advance. Full details will be on the Selbrigg.com website which is live, although some pages are still a bit bare. If you can help fill these or have any other details that I can include please contact me. Thanks – Francis Feilden [email protected]

All Saints’ Church ApseWork has been done to refresh the thatching. Please come and take a look now that it is finished. Hempstead Film Club January’s film – 3.10 to Yuma (1957) A classic western directed by Delmer Davies – Bankrupt farmer (Van Heflin) in a desperate

attempt to earn a reward for escorting a captured leader (Glen Ford) of an outlaw gang to prison. Classic shoot-out at the railway station when the bad guy turns good guy and saves the farmer. More talking than action. An interesting observation by a Film Club member ‘Glen Ford and his gang of murderous outlaws were all clean shaven throughout the film’.

February’s film – A Blonde in Love (1965) A delightful Czech film in black and white, written and directed by Milos Forman – A poignant and humorous story of lost love in a town bereft of young men (where had they all gone?) but full of young women who all worked at a collective shoe factory, the director of which tries to solve the problem by persuading the army to encamp a battalion of soldiers nearby with hilarious results at the local dance hall. The girls eager for male company are turned off by the overweight middle aged soldiers who were there for a good time. Andula (Hanna Brejchova) is easily diverted from the soldiers’ attentions by disappearing with the dance band’s pianist Milda (Vladimir Pucholt) an expert Lothario. She abandons her current boyfriend and pursues Milda to his parent's shoe box of a flat in nearby Prague only to find she is not welcome by his parents or Milda. Sad end to love affair!

Toad Patrol Volunteers will be patrolling the road near Green Farm and Rookery Pond during the toad migration period to try to reduce the toads-on-the-road casualty figures. A few toads have already started to cross the road and many more will do so from dusk onwards as days and evenings become a little warmer (especially in damp conditions). We will be wearing high-visibility jackets and carrying torches as we bucket the toads across the road. Signs will be out whilst we are

Christmas Donations All Saints’ Church sent £157 to the Children’s Society following the lovely Christingle Service held before Christmas. It was good to see so many families there. Also, after the Come and Sing Carols evening, £25 was sent to St Martin’s Housing in Norwich, for the benefit of the homeless.

New HedgerowsIn the interest of balance, after commenting on the loss of trees in a field south of Matlaske last month, I’d like to mention that over the last few weeks many gaps in the old hedgerows have been re-planted, so that within a few years a regeneration of the field edges should be well under way.

Plumstead News

Found in Plumstead A tiny teddy bear was found on the public footpath between Plumstead Green and Jericho Lane at the end of January 2012. It is currently lodging at Green Farm, Plumstead Green. If it is yours please telephone 577376 because it would like to be reunited with you.

Plumstead PC Chairman David Ramsbotham has stood down as the Chairman of Plumstead PC. David said ‘It is always difficult to choose the right time to make an important personal decision but I have decided to stand down as Chairman of the Council with immediate effect to enable me to concentrate on other interests. I will continue as a Councillor to help the village in the future and to represent the views of all those who kindly supported me in the local elections last May.’

DeathIt was with sadness that we learnt of Billy Roper’s death. He and Frances lived in Cherry Tree Road for many years and only moved out to Mundesley fairly recently in order to be near Nadine and her family. Our condolences go to Frances, Nadine and Kevin and Cathy and their families.

Welcome...To Matthew Sewell who has come to live in his grandparents’ (Terry and Joan Cooper) bungalow on Stocks Hill.

Gresham Village SchoolWe are delighted to welcome an occasional column from Marc Goodliffe, headteacher of one of the schools attended by some of the children in our Benefice.

Steaming Gloves and Warm FacesChristingle and all the school Christmas celebrations seem a long time ago now – all present thoughts amongst Gresham Village children are on the snow. With the first major snow fall in the final week of the half term, we were all able to get outside and enjoy it. As I look out of the Blueroom window, the field is covered in snow men and women of all shapes and sizes, gloves and scarves continue to steam on the radiators and there is a warm glow on the faces of all the children. It is scene that we are all familiar with and one that brings back memories of our own not so distant childhoods.

Our children, like our snowmen, are all unique individuals, all with their own different backgrounds and experiences that make them the children they are. Learning is about having fun, because children learn best and more deeply when they are happy and the learning is memorable. Some recent news has highlighted how boys and girls learn differently- of course they do, we’ve known this for years, although we know it is not as simple as that! In fact the Victorian ‘boys’ entrance still stands and although no-one wants to see segregation by gender, we, by recognising their differences, can support all of our children more fully and encourage happy confident children who are keen to learn. All our children are at the beginning of their own journeys in life, learning to read and write and to become grown ups with a sense of duty for their community and families. We, the adults responsible for our children, are all acutely aware of our role to help them on this journey and treat each and every one of them as an individual.

In the run up to Easter, we are all looking forward to our spectacular production of Alice in Wonderland, which will be open to the whole community on the afternoon of 21st March. We have a Family Quiz night on 19th April and a car-boot on Saturday 5th May. If you would like to come to these events, please drop in or call the school office 577349. Our Toddler Group meets at the school every Thursday at 1.30.
