2015 VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION What is A Voluntary School Contribution? The vast majority of public schools request a contribution from parents each year to supplement existing funding. These contributions allow schools to provide additional resources and learning programs for our students.

What Will The Money Be Used For? The money will be used to purchase resources to support teaching/learning programs for each student across the school.

How Much? The suggested contribution is $50 per child. Please note that this roughly equates to $1 per child per week. I cannot stress enough the difference to our school finances that your contribution will make. The contribution fees are within the guidelines as set out by the Department of Education and Communities.

How To Pay Please place your contribution, with the slip below, in an envelope and return it to the school office as soon as you are able. If you prefer, you may choose to pay a contribution in instalments. A receipt will be issued for all monies received.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school.

World of Maths Roadshow Numeracy is a compulsory component of our curriculum, and to make numeracy fun and relevant to our students, we have arranged for the World of Maths Roadshow to visit our school. The World of Maths Roadshow is an ideal opportunity for students to see how maths is applied to some real life situations.

More importantly, students will be engaged in hands-on activities that will cater for all ability levels and probe their problem solving skills. It is a highly engaging session which will show the children that maths can be fun!

Year 5 Food Inventions Year 5 students have been reading the book ‘The 26-storey Treehouse’ by Andy Griffiths before attending our excursion to see this as a play. The students have enjoyed the crazy and extraordinary inventions that are described throughout the text. Year 5 have designed and described their own bizarre food inventions and then drawn what they would look like.

Max Price’s “Pizzanater” which prepares, cooks and cuts up

your pizza for you with his many hands.

Georja Seaman’s “Jaylo” which is a mind reading machine

that finds out what you want to eat and cooks it for you.

Swimming Carnival On Monday students from Years 3 – 6 donned their house colours and proudly represented the sports houses of Wattle, Waratah and Bluegum in our 2015 swimming carnival. The weather was perfect for a day spent in the water. We had a great number of students competing in races and everyone participated in the novelty events.

Congratulations to Bluegum who won the carnival. The staff and students would like to thank the parents who took the time to help timekeep and assist throughout the day.

Good luck to the students who qualified to represent Crookwell Public School at the district swimming carnival taking place in Goulburn on the 24th February.

LIBRARY NEWS Welcome back to all students ….the library is open for business!

This semester, whilst the weather is warm outside, the library will not be open at recess or lunchtime. Books may be placed in the return box at the front of the library at anytime during the day. Books may be borrowed during regular class library lessons where supervision and assistance will be provided by either teachers or office staff or library assistants.

To ensure that the books stay clean and in good condition, students who wish to borrow a book must bring a library bag to their library lesson. We are again very fortunate to have a responsible, reliable group of library monitors from Year 6. These students will play an important role in the library with many regular jobs and responsibilities to complete each week.

Stage 1 has commenced their HSIE Unit called ‘Celebrations’ and have been busy painting and decorating the library to reflect their work.

Stage 2 has commenced their HSIE/ History unit called ‘Living in Communities’ and have been busy decorating the map of Australia, adding some colour to our library.

We are all looking forward to an exciting term with some surprises in store!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with queries or concerns regarding any of the above information. Thank you Mrs Davies Meet and Greet/Home Reading Parent Information Session is on Monday 16th Feb. On Monday 16th February there will be an opportunity for teachers and parents to meet one another and exchange information that may enhance the quality of a child’s educational experience.

The Year 1/2 teachers, Miss Kemp, Mrs McCormack and Mr Whittington will meet parents in the Technology Centre while Miss O’Neill, Mrs Jansen and Mrs Atfield will meet parents in their classrooms at 3.30pm.

Miss Logan and Mr Grey will meet the Kindergarten parents in the Kindergarten room and the Year 3/4 teachers, Mrs Harrison, Miss Bell and Miss Winkler will meet parents will in the Technology Centre at 4.30pm.

Following the ‘Meet and Greet’ at 5.30pm will be a Home Reading Information session for parents in the Technology Centre. This session, hosted by Mrs Davies and Mrs McCormack, is to provide parents with some ideas, hints and tips about doing home reading with their children. Parents may also like to volunteer to be reading mums and dads at school one or two mornings per week. Reading is a critical skill and we would like parents to reinforce some of the strategies we use at school to make this an enjoyable experience each night with you and your children.

We look forward to your attendance to these sessions.

Back in the Groove! With the end of Week 3 now upon us it is amazing to see how quickly our wonderful students have settled back in to school routines. Friendships have rekindled after the summer break and classes across the school are settled and working hard.

Emma Robertson and Darcie Osborne were very happy to

be back at school after the long summer break. Peer Support Leaders’ Training for Year 5 and Year 6 Students This year, due to the small Year 6 enrolment, Peer Support will be run with the assistance of Year 5 students. Consequently, all students in Years 5 & 6 will participate in Peer Support Leaders’ Training, which will be held on Thursday February 19th and Friday February 20th, at Crookwell Public School, in preparation for their role as Peer Support Leaders for 2015.

For the two days the students will be divided into small groups with students from Crookwell High School facilitating the training, under the supervision of Mrs Atfield, Miss O’Neill and Mrs Jansen. Students will work through a range of experimental activities, take part in discussions and complete activities in their Peer Leader’s Guide.

During the training, students will participate in a range of activities focusing on: • Leadership skills

• Relationships with others

• Their role and responsibilities

• The structure of a peer support session

• Understanding how groups work

• Strategies to lead a group

• The facilitation of some activities.

This training is part of the school’s comprehensive plan and commitment to create a safe school. It provides students with the opportunity to develop and practise leadership skills within a supportive environment.

Year 5 and Year 6 students are to come to school, on both days, in weather appropriate casual clothes and closed in casual shoes. Lunch will be supplied on Friday. Students are to bring a pen, an adventurous spirit and a sense of humour! Thank you, Lesley Atfield, Kirstie O’Neill and Margi Jansen

Year 3/4 Sport The students in Years 3 and 4 have been really enjoying sport this term. Participating in physical activity promotes healthy lifestyles as well as teaching students valuable skills such as working together as a team, treating others fairly and trying their best. It’s also a great opportunity for all students to get outside and have some fun.

Students in Year 3 and 4 warm up for relay races.

Library Assistants 2015 Once again our school library is fortunate to have the assistance of several Year 6 students to fill the important role of library assistants. Each year several interested and capable Year 6 students are chosen to take on this important leadership role. Their duties are varied and interesting, and combine to ensure the smooth daily working of the school library for all students and staff.

This year our library assistants are Megan Forbes, Grace Skelly, Harriet Woods, Petria Okkonen, Chloe Griffith, Taiten Hill, Sophie Murphy and Adrian Olde. These wonderful assistants have already immersed themselves in their important role and regularly display their mature responsible leadership characteristics in the library.

Well done so far and thankyou for the valuable contribution you are making to Crookwell Public school.

Mrs Davies

Taiten Hill, Megan Forbes, Grace Skelly, Harriet Woods, Petria Okkonen and Chloe Griffith were busy, using the

library computer to assist students with the borrowing and returning of books.

Absent: Adrian Olde and Sophie Murphy

Jargon Buster Wondering why your kids talk about playing under the school COLA? Baffled at parent-teacher discussions about KLA's? This list of common abbreviations or terms will help you to become familiar with the world inside school.

Exemptions could be granted for similar reasons to those allowed in the 1880 Act; but children of 11 years or more were not exempt unless required to walk more than three miles to school.

P&C News

Monday night saw our first P&C meeting for 2015, and wow what a turnout. It was fantastic to see you all back and so many new faces too. I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to school to all of our students and their families on behalf of our P&C. To all of our new families and students we say welcome to C.P.S.

Our AGM will be held on Monday 30/03/15 where all positions will be declared vacant. We would love to see as many of you there as possible and please don’t miss it because you are afraid you will be given a positon you are not qualified for. If you would like to be a member of the P&C this year there is an annual membership fee of $2 per person. This small fee will entitle you to vote on decisions at P&C meetings. Membership fees are due prior to the AGM so please fill in the form below and send in your $2 membership fee to the school office who will pass this information on to the Treasurer.

March is going to be a very, very, very, busy month for the P&C.

On Saturday 7th March we will be holding a stall at the Potato Festival at the Memorial Oval. We will be selling baked goods and holding a wood raffle. If anyone out there is able to donate a cake or slice we would be very grateful for the help. We would also like to call on volunteers to help sell raffle tickets. If you are available for half an hour to 1 hour please complete the slip below and return it to the school office or phone the school to leave your details. We are grateful for your support.

On Saturday 14th March the Binda Picnic Races are on. As in previous years the P&C along with our wonderful teaching staff will be running a BBQ; selling sausage and steak sandwiches, meat and salad rolls, drinks and for dessert scones with jam and cream. We will be running an Easter raffle at this event and would like to request donations from families for this raffle. Be it chocolate or vouchers or whatever you think would be great to help celebrate Easter for one lucky winner. The raffle will be drawn on the 28th March after the State Election.

This brings us to our 3rd fundraising event of March. The N.S.W. State Elections will be on Saturday 28th March. So the P&C will be running another wood raffle. I would like to shout a big “THANK-YOU” to Norm McCormack who has kindly offered to donate the wood for BOTH of our wood raffles in March. If there are any parents who would like to donate some time to sell tickets at the elections please fill out the slip below and return to the school office.

I wish you all a safe and relaxing weekend, take care.

Sharon King, C.P.S. P&C Secretary. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Attached to this week's newsletter is an information pack for parents. School banking day at Crookwell Public School is every Friday so for those students who have a Youth Saver Account with the Commonwealth Bank, you can bring your deposit book to school and it will be processed and deposited for you at the bank. All deposits made through the School Banking Program help earn the school valuable commission which helps fund resources for the school. For those students who don't have a Youth Saver Account, it is easy to open one by one of the methods below: 1. Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with ID for yourself and your child (i.e. birth certificate); 2. Call the bank on 13 2221; 3. Download a form from commbank.com.au/youthsaverapplication or 4. If you are already an existing Commonwealth Bank customer, log into NetBank, go to the "Offers and Apply" tab, click "Accounts" and "Youthsaver". From there just select Crookwell Public School, and have your child's birth certificate on hand for ID purposes. It's never too late to start banking. There is no minimum deposit and a Youth Saver bank account can be opened at any time through any branch of the Commonwealth Bank. There are account application forms at the school office. New account application forms should be taken directly to the bank and not sent to school as the bank will need to verify your child's ID. Thank you for your support, School Banking Team

LOOK OUT HERE COMES PETER KAOS is about to hit again and you can be a part of this year’s production. KAOS is about having fun, achieving something personal in your lives- whether it is by - increasing your self-esteem, confidence, making new friends or just getting up in front of an audience- something maybe you think you can’t do.

This year we are staging Peter Pan (and yes there will be flying) which has a large speaking cast and is designed for all ages. Popular songs have been added to make this a great show for anyone to be part of.

The production team for KAOS this year is Sandra Bill, Rechell Naughton and Rebecca George.

If you are interested we will be having a ‘muster’ afternoon (to explain the commitment and take names) on Thursday February 12th from 5.30pm till 6.30pm. Then Monday February 16th we will be holding auditions from 5.00pm till 7.00pm with the younger parts auditioning first.

Both these afternoons will be held at the Crookwell Memorial Hall in Denison Street Crookwell and if you attend school, either primary or high school you are welcome.
