I am writing to implore you to block in-flight cell phone use. Not only would the noise level be unbearable, but many of us believe that it would cause unrest because something untoward may be overheard, a potential bomber could click their cell phone to engage a bomb, and just the general peace-and-quiet would be disrupted.

We all know that once "given an inch", it is human nature to take that to a mile and then it would become a "right" to talk on your cell phone ... that entitlement issue. It is ridiculous that the public could conceivably not go without talking on their cell phones for an hour to 14 hours. If they have other devices to use, like iPads, etc., let that be enough.

Case in point is not talking while driving; has anyone noticed how many people still do that? It is a distraction and endangerment. Imagine the flight attendants trying to give people direction during an emergency, taking refreshment orders, and soothing a ruffled passenger with a loud noise level-unpleasant chaos. ·

Again, use your safety and lobbying power to block this measure/idea. Thanking you in advance .for your efforts.

I understand you are considering a proposal to allow inflight mobile service above ten thousand feet. PLEASE do not allow any such thing! If people used their mobile communication devices responsibly and in a manner that showed some thought for others, I'd be all for this. But we know that this just isn't the case. Currently, an in-flight aircraft is one of very few places I can go without hearing some individual yammering on endlessly (and typically mindlessly) on his or her cell phone. I don't want to hear this person's end of the conversation, but it's all too frequent that I have no choice. One or two airlines have announced "mobile-free zones", but that's going to be completely ineffective when the zone ends in your row; you'll still be able to hear people talking into their phones all over the plane. Flying is stressful enough these days; please do not add to that.

Further, there are genuine safety concerns. What's going to happen when mobile communication above ten thousand feet is allowed, and John Smith receives a phone call mid-flight from his wife of23 years, Jane Smith, announcing that she wants a divorce? What's going to occur when busy advertising executive Ellen Jones receives a phone call mid-flight from her incompetent assistant, who has managed to screw up the big account she should have landed for her agency? What about the unfortunate individual who is informed halfway through a trancontinental journey that a beloved relative has passed away before he could get to see them? How will he react? The problem here is one of "air meltdown". It might be rage, it might be hysteria, it might be a panic attack, or the other passengers could hit the trifecta from hell and have all three occur simultaneously. People react emotionally to all sorts of things, both with and without justification. A passenger who is hysterical or out of control is more than sufficient reason for any flight to have to be terminated suddenly. And a flight that does not reach its destination means that everyone on the plane is inconvenienced or worse, all because someone received a phone call when the plane was in the air.

News, good or bad, can wait until a flight lands. Please allow some of us temporary tranquility and a break from the endless mobile conversations of others! Do not allow inflight mobile service on aircraft, period!

Thank you for your consideration.

~~~ Stephanie D. Zonis
Can you imagine setting next to a teenager for 3 hours who talks and says "NOTHING". A loud mouth Sales person ... trying to impress the entire airline passengers If there is an emergency ... you can make it up ... so there is no reason to have exceptions. There will be problems for the flight attendants with. passengers. I can go on ...
Don't allow airlines to let you sit in a quite no CAll ZONE ... it won' t work. Then make you pay for it. NOT FAIR ... Enough extra costs.
There has to be some control over phone use.
PLEASE NO PHONE USE ON AN AIRLINE ...
I travel a lot and if I want to speak with the person next to me that is enough. Please listen to those of us who say NO PHONE USE on an AIRLINE.
I am against the ruling that approved that passengers be able to talk on their cell phones during flights because of the following reasons:
l. As passengers we are forced to get to airports two hours before flight time. For those who live a distance from the airport it may mean getting there four hours before flight .tip:te, which means getting up very early in the morning. As a result passengers like myself look forward to relaxing and possibly sleeping so as to be somewhat alert when we arrive at our destination.
2. Going into work in the mornings I have been exposed to uncaring, loud, and even argumentative phone conversations with a person next to me. Politely telU~g :the ,individual to speak lower has brought on undesirable results .. · ·u
3. I feel that as a flying passenger I have the right to not being inconvenienced or intimidated by a talkative passenger.
I hope that the FCC will take above into account and reverse their ruling on cell phone ~PPt;~,val. ~ '· , . , , . , .
Last week, while I was sitting on an airplane traveling internationally, squeezed in on all four sides by a seat designed by a midget who apparently had no legs (since there was no space for my legs in the area assigned to me), trying to balance the $4 bottle of water and micro-bag of tired pretzels in the space that remained in the area between seat and my neighbor's fully reclined seatback, I read that you are considering permitting cell telephone calls to be made during flights. Except for the fact that there was too little space available for me to move freely, I would have banged my head sharply against the seat in front of me to dull the horror.
PLEASE tell me that this is some weird type of April Fools Day joke! I tried to bring to mind all the ways in which airplane travel has shifted over the 'more than 58 years I have been flying as a passenger on commercial airlines. Years ago, we dressed in suit and tie; stewardesses wore high heels and nylon 'stockings; fuld foOd amved on rea( china, heated to dining temperature. Time spent in ;the 3:ir was· actUally ~·period of time that wa5' pieasant
Nowadays, one wishes that some Federal agency wouid accord passengers the rights enjoyed to cattle being led to slaughter. Frankly, the thought of being trapped for hours at a time on a cross continental flight near some blowhard bellowing into his cell phone, with a teeny-queenie across the aisle sobbing about her boyfriend who just dumped her, while a hard-of-hearing grandmother talks baby talk to the new grandchild - couldn't we just sign up to sit in the section reserved for screanling i.rifants instead? We are strongly opposed to the FCC approval of the use of mobile phones on board airplanes.
We are sure that you personally have observed abusive cell phone use in places like libraries, restaurants, and movie theaters. These are all places that forbid cell phone use, but they take place anyway. These cell phone abusers are loud, profane, and not discreet of whatever they are yakking about for long periods of time.
At least in those locations, we can get up and move away from the rude and discourteous big mouths. But as you know, we are virtually captives within an airline. We are strapped into very narrow and cramped seats. We are rarely allowed to stand up, much less walk around. So your ruling will force us to bear these obnoxious situations like no other locations in our daily lives.
And the example of pennitting emergency phone use is a big fraud and falsehood as well. Dwing the last 60 years of aviation (other than 9/11 ), has there been any instance when a potential cell phone user needed to make their personal call? The answer, of course, is no. No emergency "exception" is needed. The abusers will just lie about their purpose.
We beg you to NOT allow cell phone use while in flight. Allow us some peace and civility.
I am writing in opposition to the proposal allowing cell phone usage on airplanes while in flight. I can think of no greater annoyance or distraction to nonusers being seated in an aluminum tube across from someone loudly chattering away or, horror of horrors, in between two such inconsiderate oafs while trying to watch a movie, reading a book or newspaper or just wanting to relax.
Air travel is getting to be difficult enough without the Commission foisting this regulation on the public. Thank you for your consideration.
We just heard on the news that you are considering cell phone usage on airplanes.
We would like each one of you who \Ote to imagine yourselves, on an airplane packed with 300 people, with different languages using their cell phones; each would be yelling louder & louder to be heard! To us it almost UNIMAGINABLE!
Pilots and Stewardesses would not be able to be heard, nor the seat belt warning when to stay seated. Fights between passenger would erupt, etc. This would sound like the Tower of Babel and wold be like torture to us. We would never fty on an airplane after that law has been passed.
Please for everyone's sake and sanity, DO NOT PASS lHIS LAW!
Thank You,
To: The FCC/FAA commission on allowing Cell Phone talking during flihts FCC Mail Room
I have been flying for over 75 years, and cannot bear the thought of having someone next to me talking
for hours on an airplane. I object to the talking, not the texting or emailing on smart phones. It is one of
tnefew places where one is allowed some privacy and quiet as it is, unlike restaurants where one can
just leave.
A group of women discussed this last week, and we are so terrified of sitting next to a talker, we will
hope that airlines schedule some "non talking" flights. The trains have designated cars where there is no
cell phone talking allowed.
You can't control who talks and who doesn't and it would be just dreadful and keep me from flying.
Re: An absurd possible change to permitting passengers on board to go yackety-yak.
I read with great disturbance in today's USA TODAY (copy attached) that "At its meeting Dec. 12, the FCC will consider changing its rules to allow passengers access to mobile wireless services." Please do your utmost not to permit such nonsense. When a passenger steps on a plane he wants peace and quiet. The seats are getting smaller and closer to each other already, and then the last thing you want is listening to some nonsense that people around you will yak about on some phone-forever.
Dear Mr. Chairman, please make sure such nonsense will never be permitted.
I fly often and do not want to be exposed to such completely unnecessary and annoying nonsense.
Encl.
The Federal Communications Commission is reviewing its 22-year ban against. in-flight .cellphone cills, igniting concerns among frequent fliers about plane cabins becoming much noisier.
I say a vehement ''No!" to the infliction of cell phone pollution on flights. As you mentioned that it is technically fine, I assert that it is morally wrong.
Rather than sign an on-line website in protest, I choose to take time from writing my book manuscript to contact you. I am assaulted with electronic noise outside of my home. I carry earplugs which mute, but do not erase. When I go to a movie, I arrive twenty minutes after the scheduled time to avoid the ear-splitting previews on which managers claim the sound cannot be turned down.
I have traveled on six continents. Last month, on a flight from New York to Charlotte, I was trying to rest. The bright light from the tablet of the man in the middle seat made a nap impossible. I put my head on the seatback in front of me and raised my left arm to block some of the distraction. This scenario was exacerbated by the motor-mouthed jerk in the row behind me who was talking loudly "at" a person across the aisle. A polite request to him to please lower his voice went ignored.
I undergo a public, humiliating search when my chemo Power Port sets off security. I no longer present the card from my oncologist.
Know that when I travel, I will choose Delta or another airline which does not permit cell phone usage during captive-audience flights.
Sincerely,
As someone who flies a lot for business and pleasure I am adamantly opposed to the use of cell phones by passengers on fl ights.
Each year there are more inconveniences to flying on the airlines but with the added annoyance of passengers talking on their phones through an entire flight could make it unbearable for many of us. Why can't we have simple peace and quiet? I also agree that this will be a tremendous burden to flight attendants who already have a miserable job dealing with passengers.
The only reason this is seriously being considered is lobbying by telecommunications companies so people use more of their minutes. It's all about money and not good public policy. Also it is not a good idea to let airlines decide this for themselves- they' ll cave to pressure from the telecommunications lobby and K Street.
