The rally, a firm favourite on the annual rally calendar, celebrates the fact that Toyota has the largest dealernetwork in the province and is a strong contender inthe National Rally Championship.

“Toyota has 35 dealers in the Western Cape. This is thelargest dealer network in the province and it ensures that youare never far away from Toyota,” says Anton Falck, SeniorRegional Manager of the Western Cape region for Toyota.

Toyota’s wide Western Cape presence mirrors that of allthe other provinces and neighbouring countries, in whichToyota has the largest and most representative dealernetwork. This follows a practice started in 1961 – the year inwhich Toyota was established in South Africa – to create anetwork of dealers near customers. This was a novel approach

as all other manufacturers focussed on the major cities andtowns and vehicle owners often had to travel far forassistance.

Today Toyota maintains a wide network of dealers, which itservices with parts and components from its National PartsDistribution Centre (NPDC) in Gauteng. The centre, whichwill be the largest of its kind on the continent once bothphases are complete, delivers service and repair parts toevery dealer every day.

“People place their trust in Toyota. This is in no small partthanks to the network of dealers who provide quality serviceand support to our customers. We would like to thank themfor their continued partnership and support for motor sport,”says Falck.

The South African Rally Championship moves to theWestern Cape for the first time this year for the ToyotaCape Dealer Rally, the second of the two rounds of theeight-event championship sponsored by Toyota SouthAfrica Motors.

It will also mark the sixth national championship outing ofthe all-new Toyota Yaris S2000, Toyota Motorsport SouthAfrica’s latest weapon in the quest for an 11th national rallychampionship.

The two-door four-wheel drive Yaris, built and developed byGlyn Hall and his team at Toyota Motorsport’s BarbecueDowns workshop within earshot of the Kyalami grand prixcircuit, has made an immediate impact on the rally specialstages, improving with every outing as the team works hard onits development.

Four consecutive podiums in five events and a best result todate of second in the Toyota Gauteng Dealer Rally in roundthree – with Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan (Castrol TeamToyota Yaris)– have been encouraging, but Hall wants more.

“Johnny and Carolyn are third in the championship, but 36points behind current leaders Cronje and Houghton in the carin which they won the 2012 championship. However they’reonly 11 points behind Jan Habig and Robert Paisley. We have topush for our first win and to achieve this on an eventsponsored by Toyota would be more than appropriate,” saidHall.

All three of Toyota Motorsport’s entries are strongcontenders and each has been on the podium in the new car.Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee, fifth in the championship inthe second Castrol Team Toyota Auris and second in round two, missed out on what would have been a well-deserved secondplace in the recent Ford Dealer Rally after being penalised aminute for an unintentional jump start.

Dakar Rally winner Giniel de Villiers and Greg Godrich arefourth in the championship in the Imperial Toyota Yaris after aconsistent first season together in the top class that has seenthem finish in the top six on three occasions with a best resultof third in round four.

“Despite a lot of testing and making improvements we’re notseeing the results we expected,” said team principal Hall. “Forthe Toyota Cape Dealer Rally we’ve changed the set-up quite alot – suspension and transmission in particular. The cars will beeasier to drive, rather than faster, and more predictable. Resultsof testing have been encouraging. We have three good cars.”

The two-day 780-kilometre Toyota Cape Dealer Rally willstart from Imperial Toyota CapeGate in Brackenfell at 11.00 on

Friday September 13 and finish back at Imperial Toyota around15.00 on Saturday. There will be five special stages on each daycovering a total of some 175-kilometres of timed flat-out racing.Rally headquarters and the event’s single service park, whichwill be used twice on Friday and three times on Saturday, will beat Brackenfell High School.

With a 25-point lead in hand – equivalent to a rallyvictory – defending champions Mark Cronje andRobin Houghton seem headed for a second straighttitle in their Ford Dealer Fiesta S2000 as thechampionship heads for the Western Cape for thethird last round of the championship, the Toyota CapeDealer Rally this weekend.

Time is running out for the Toyota and Volkswagen factoryteams to capture what for the past few years has been forthem the elusive South African National Rally Championship.Volkswagen last won in 2010 with Enzo Kuun and GuyHodgson – the end of a six-year winning streak for theUitenhage-based team - while Toyota’s run of 12 driver’s

championships came to an end with Serge Damseaux’s victoryin 2004.

Cronje and Houghton’s winning run last season followedFord’s first national championship in 29 years withZimbabwean Conrad Rautenbach taking the title in 2011 in aFiesta S2000. Ford’s previous title was won by the legendarySarel van der Merwe way back in 1982.

Not only do the Toyotas and Volkswagens have to catchCronje and Houghton, who have won four of the five eventsso far, they also have to catch second-placed privateers andformer champions Jan Habig and Robert Paisley in a BasilRead Ford Fiesta S2000, the only other crew to have won thisyear. The veteran Habig has been enjoying a resurgence of

form since leaving the factory VW team for whom he won fivetitles between 1999 and 2007.

The leading factory Toyota is the Castrol Yaris S2000 ofperennial runner-up Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan, whoare 11 points behind Habig/Paisley and 36 behindCronje/Houghton. Gemmell, a former FIA African rallychampion and national production car rally champion, hasfinished second in the championship four times and would likenothing better than to rectify this. He and Swan have a secondand a third to their credit to date and will be aiming for thetop step on the podium this weekend and a rare win by amanufacturer in its own rally.

The locally built and developed four-wheel drive YarisS2000 rally car is showing pace and promise in its first seasonand Gemmell’s Toyota Motorsport team-mates Giniel deVilliers and Greg Godrich (ImperialToyota Yaris) and Leeroy Poulterand Elvéne Coetzee (Castrol Yaris)– currently fourth and fifthrespectively in the championship –are also contenders for a maidenYaris win should Cronje andHoughton run into any problems. Both have finished on the podiumalready with Poulter second toCronje in round two.

The leading factory Volkswagenis the Sasolracing Polo S2000 of 19-year-old Henk Lategan and BarryWhite in joint fifth place withPoulter/Coetzee. Lategan hasimpressed in his first season in thetop class and boasts a second placein the recent Ford Dealer Rally.Looking to regain their formerglory but enduring a disappointingseason so far are VW’s formerchampions Enzo Kuun/Douglas Juddand Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries inthe other two Sasolracing Polos.

These two experienced crewsboast 11 championships betweenthem, but their results to date,

which see them in 10th and 11thplaces respectively in thechampionship, do not reflect theirtrue ability. Both drivers haveshown flashes of their true pace, with Kuun finishing third in roundthree, and it’s just a matter of timebefore they come good.

Seventh overall and leading theS2000 Challenge class for olderspecification four-wheel drive carswith 30 points are Team Total’s Jean-Pierre Damseaux and Hilton Auffrayin a Toyota Auris after two classwins in the first five rounds. Ninepoints behind in the driver’scategory is defending Challengetitle holder Gugu Zulu (VWSasolracing Polo) who has a classwin and two seconds but also twonon-finishes to his name. His co-driver, Carl Peskin, is fourth in his

category as a result of missing a round to attend the birth ofhis first child.

Mohammed Moosa is third in the driver’s category and co-driver Andre Vermeulen is second in his category in thesecond Team Total Auris. They also have a class win to theircredit and any one of these top three crews, who are coveredby just 9,5 points, is capable of winning.

Japie van Niekerk and Gerhard Snyman are enjoying arevitalised season after Van Niekerk acquired an older specFord Fiesta and the pair won the Challenge class in the recentFord Dealer Rally. Van Niekerk is fourth in the driver standingswhile Snyman, who stood in for Peskin in round three, is thirdin the co-driver competition.

With just 9,5 points separating the top five and threedifferent winners in the past five rounds, the S1600class for two-wheel drive cars is the most hotlycontested in the South African Rally Championship.

The lead in the championship has been changing fromround to round and with just three of the eight roundsremaining time is running out for the champions-in-waiting tomake their move.

Heading the points table as the young contenders (and oneveteran with numerous titles already under his belt) preparefor the Toyota Cape Dealer are Matthew Vacy-Lyle and Schalkvan Heerden (Fragram Tools Toyota RunX). Surprisingly theyhave yet to win a round, but their consistency – they havefinished in the top five in each event to date – has paid off.

Second and a slim two points in arrears is the wily andvastly experienced Craig Trott and his co-driver JanineLourens (Team Total Toyota RunX), who have scored in everyround including two podiums and are also seeking their firstwin of the season.

Trailing them by 1,5 points are former championshipleaders Clint Weston and Christoff Snyders (Reef TankersCitroen C2 R2), the latter a champion driver turned co-driver,who have two class wins so far but also two low scoringrounds where they finished under Super Rally rules afterexperiencing problems on the opening day. They led therecent Ford Dealer Rally on the final day for the first sixspecial stages before rolling out of contention on the laststage.

Joint fourth and a further six points off the lead are

Namibian Thilo Himmel and Armand du Toit in the debutseason of the all-South African Toyota Etios R2 and circuitracer turned rally driver Chad van Beurden (Van BeurdenConstruction VW Polo R2). Himmel and Du Toit have beenthe most consistent stage winners and led the championshipafter the first three rounds thanks to two class wins and asecond place.

Van Beurden and stand-in co-driver Nico Swartz weresecond in the recent Ford Dealer Rally in Gauteng, VanBeurden’s best result in his first season in rallying.

Sixth after an incident-filled season that has included a winin the most recent round and three low-scoring Super Rallyfinishes is Ashley Haigh-Smith (Castrol Ford Fiesta R2), whoseBritish co-driver Chris Parry is fifth in his category thanks toVan Beurden’s regular co-driver Henry Dearlove Jnr missingthe Ford Dealer Rally.

With a deficit of 21 points to the current class leaders –equivalent to a second place finish – Haigh-Smith and Parryare by no means out of championship contention, whichmakes the S1600 class so fascinating to follow. It is a fast-growing class that is attracting new competitors from othermotorsport disciplines and with 15 entries in the Ford DealerRally it is proving to be a popular ‘nursery’ for the moresenior classes and a fertile proving ground for champions ofthe future.

Also the numerous people working in the background, controls , spectator marshals, radio operatorsand officials without whose help the Rally would not be possible.

Leaving only your footprints sounds easier than it actually is.

It requires a conscious effort which includes taking certain actions,

while refraining from others.

At the end of the event, when you leave the great outdoors today, your

footprints should be the sole evidence that you have visited here.
