Thank you for attending this year’s Junior School Musical,“It Happened In Hamelin”. Spending the last three months with these talented students, watching both their skills develop and also their confidence build, has been an absolute joy and privilege. We are so proud to have worked with them. By the end of this performance, I hope that you will agree that the talent and professionalism shown by many of these very young actors is undeniably impressive.
Putting on a full scale musical is no easy feat, requiring the dedication and co-operation of many people at Wesley. With over one hundred students involved not only on stage, but also in the orchestra, crew and behind the scenes, the co-ordination of such a talented and energetic group is quite a challenge! Our sincere thanks to all the countless hours contributed by all those amazing staff involved – you know who you are!
Our special thanks needs to go those who have been there for the long haul – without whom the show would simply not have gone on. Sabino Delbalso, for his attention to technical detail, Tony Scanlon for his artistic visions, and Stephanie Des Barres and Jill Welch for their enthusiasm and incredible work ethic. Finally, without Judith Ben-Simon’s patience, commitment and creativity, and the incredible skill, easy going nature and gentle encouragement of both Gillian Baldwin and David Mowat, this show would not sound as wonderful as it does. Congratulations team and thank you so much.
Twenty years have passed since Wesley College last performed this popular musical and it still retains the same vibrancy and colour. However, in this current version it was decided to give more emphasis to the message of the original legend. This revised ending highlights the importance of several of the show’s main messages; staying true to your word and acting with integrity. However, perhaps the most important messages is that the world is not all that it seems, and lying just out of reach are other possibilities undreamt of within us. In this, it is the children who lead the way.
Thank you for joining these students in what is to be the final Junior School musical for both of us, and for Wesley College. It is hoped that you enjoy the performance as much as we all have enjoyed preparing it for you.

SynopsisThe play is set in the quiet, German town of Hamelin many years ago. The town is peopled by many endearing characters such as the vain Mayor Otto; his younger brother, Fred, the town’s perpetually nervous exchequer; and their sister Zezparellda; the zany, lovable Royal Wizardess.
As the play opens, the normally placid town is in an uproar. Rats have invaded the streets and houses and are everywhere- in the beds, in the pantries, fighting the dogs, and even killing the cats! The townsfolk are desperate. Led by the wise Cobbler and his grandson the lame boy Johann, they petition the mayor to find a solution to the problem. But the foolish Otto is more interested in preparing for his Very Grand Ball than in spending money on solving the rat problem!
Suddenly, a mysterious Pied Piper appears in their midst dressed in a garment of yellow and red. The Piper is a strange figure who belongs to another world. He may appear to the townsfolk as a gaily-dressed joker, but he has another side that they are unaware of. The true source of the Piper’s power is a Puck-like creature that is unseen by ordinary folk. He neither speaks nor dances but uses music to shape the events of this world. The Piper agrees to help the town get rid of the rats and in gratitude the townsfolk offer to pay him one hundred golden guilders.
The Pied Piper is true to his word. However, events take on an unexpected turn when the townsfolk refuse to honour their side of the bargain. The ending is unforseen and comes as a shock to the complacent townsfolk. But one and all learn a harsh lesson that they never forget. The story was retold again and again, eventually passing into folklore and legend. Our play tonight, a musical adaptation of the famous Robert Browning poem, bring to life once more this strange tale of the Pied Piper and the unusual events that happened, long ago, in Hamelin.
