Soon after the discovery of gold at Gympie in 1867, a Cobb and Co. coach route was

established, passing over the hill on which our

school now stands. A changing camp was

necessary, so the settlement of Cobb's Camp

came into being. As the population increased, a

school was needed, so Cobb's Camp School, No.

476 was established, the opening day being 17

August, 1885. This very small school grew with

the arrival of more settlers, and the advent of

the railway line from Landsborough to

Woombye. Woombye was an aboriginal name for

the black myrtle which grew in the scrub, its

straight, tough stems being used by the coach

drivers for whip handles. Another source

attributes the name "Woombye" as an aboriginal word meaning "the place of the black

snake".

As more children attended the school, a library building now known as Cobbs Cottage was

built, and then a separate infants building was erected at right angles to it. As the years

have gone by, so the school has progressed with more buildings being added, some wooden,

two modular buildings, and later, a modern brick building. During the early fifties, the

scheme to convert a rather steep hill into a series of flat terraced playing areas, evolved,

and so we now have the playground of which Woombye School is justifiably proud. Also during

this era the first school transport came into being, a taxi bringing in the West Woombye

children. Today a fleet of buses provides easy access from the surrounding area.

There have been many teachers, but perhaps the name of J.T. Wilson is more remembered,

as during his span of office from 1899 to 1926 he helped the fruit industry for which

Woombye is famous by being instrumental in getting the first fruit train organised.

The nineties saw the development of a new building program to cater for enrolment growth

and to ensure that our ovals remained available as play areas. Major building re- development

occurred with the sale of B block, relocation of C block and construction of a new covered

area and amenities block as well as a new administration and teaching block (H Block).

In 2009, Woombye State School received a new hall and library as part of the “Building

Education Reform” Federal Funding Package. The school expanded even further early in 2012

with the acquisition of a further allotment of land. This land has been used for further

expansion with the construction of more classrooms, a music room and instrumental music

room completed in 2015. During 2018 and 2019, our school grounds were further enhanced

with the terracing of the banks separating the play areas and extensive landscaping to

mitigate erosion issues.

Today, Woombye State School has an enviable reputation

around the Sunshine Coast with an enrolment of 480 students.

We are proud of our history and our achievements and look

forward to serving the Woombye Community for many more

years to come.

Tina’s Business

Dear Parents,

Our staff and students have the right to come to our school and feel safe, valued and

respected. We value our close relationships with our parents. We value the time and

commitment that parents make to support us so their child can learn and achieve their

potential. These relationships help us to support our students to achieve their very best.

Whilst we understand there are times where emotions or frustrations can strain relationships,

attacking staff members verbally, taking these frustrations out on them, or being

disrespectful towards staff is not acceptable.

In the event that a parent is threatening, abusive,

using insulting language or disrupting the good

order or management of the school, parents need

to understand and respect that there are

processes to protect our rights to work in a safe

environment. These processes give Principals the

authority to give directions about an individual’s

conduct or movement on school property.

As a school community, we all need to work

together to create a safe and productive learning

environment for everyone.

Parents are also remind that at no time are they

to “take matter” into their own hands and

approach or to speak to another child about their

behaviour or issue that may have occurred on

school premises. Where there are concerns, please ensure you raise these concerns with your

child’s teacher, Paul or myself.

Parentline Cyberbullying training for Parents:- Parentline Cyberbullying support training

has been designed for use by all adults who care for older children and teens at risk of, or

already have experiences with cyberbullying. To view the landing page and access the training

resources: CLICK HERE

This training is FREE and available 24/7 via any internet enabled device.

The Parentline Cyberbullying training will be helpful to parents, carers and grandparents

who are:

Nervous or fearful of using the internet or new devices

Anxious about their young ones using the internet

Concerned cyberbullying may be impacting their child

Concerned their child may be engaging in cyberbullying behaviours

Would like to learn how to identify when cyberbullying may be impacting their family

unit

Would like supportive, practical information around starting uncomfortable

conversations.

This program is a joint initiative between the Queensland and Northern Territory

Governments.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival:- Yesterday, we hosted Day 1 of our Interhouse Athletics

Carnival which was our nine year old students to twelve year old students competing in

various field events. Next Friday 28th August. Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth are set to

continue the battle in all age groups across a number of events to determine the Champion

Team for 2020. We

acknowledge that in

the past, this has

been a huge

community event with

parents,

grandparents, and

other family members

coming along to cheer

and support.

Unfortunately, this

year it is a closed

event with no

spectators in any way.

This is unfortunate

but due to Covid-19

restrictions, we are

not permitted to

make it an open event.

New “You Can Do It” Flags:- For over six years, Woombye State School proudly flew the

five “You Can Do It” flags at the

front of the school. Towards the

end of last year we had to retire

these old flags due to their

deteriorating standard with

fading and rips becoming quite

prominent. At last, these flags

have been replaced and once again

fly proudly at the front of our

school. The flags of “Getting

Along”, “Organisation”,

“Confidence”, “Resilience” and

“Persistence” fly prominently once

again at the front of our school as

a constant reminder of the keys

that underpin our behaviours at

Woombye State School.

Sunshine Coast Regional Sporting Representatives:- With

the Covid-19 outbreak this year affecting many ‘normal’

Representative School Sporting events, it is pleasing to see

that some sporting selection trials have been possible.

Sunshine Coast Regional Trials were recently conducted for

the 12 years and under Hockey Teams. This year, we are proud

to announce two Woombye State School students have been

selected in the Sunshine Coast Regional Team to contest the

State titles. Congratulations Wil Ehrat and Connor Leyburn on your selections into this team.

Both boys will travel to Ipswich to contest the State Titles in October.

Prep Orientation for 2021:- Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions in

place in Queensland schools, Woombye State School will not be hosting a

general Prep Information Meeting. Instead, a short video will be created

and distributed before the end of the Term to all families on our Prep 2021

Waiting List. Prep Interviews will still be conducted early Term Four with

a decision still pending on how the transitions will take place later in the

term.

Woombye State School Private Therapists/NDIS Guidelines for Term 3 2020:-

Applications can be made for appointments at the school for Private Therapists as per the

NDIS Guidelines. These applications can be made by contacting Ellen Cummings, Head of

Special Education Services, (HOSES) via email [email protected]. The appropriate

pm-3 pm for these appointments. The room has already been booked for some sessions so

appointment will be rescheduled at the Principal’s discretion. Contact Ellen if you have any

questions.

please order uniform items via QKR and items will be

delivered to the student. If you need to try on an item please

contact us to make an appointment.

immediately and Out of Catchment enrolments are accepted on to our

waiting list with a very high chance of acceptance into the program.

on this day but the school will be
