Representation of Males and Females -

Within Thriller

Females • Insurgent:

The film insurgent presents women to be powerful, independent and determined. The main character of Insurgent is a female therefore challenging the traditional media technique of using the male as the main character due to its biological power (muscles)

In order to present her significance and how powerful she is it had been done through the use of her role and clothing. However it can be argued and said that actually her hair has been cut off therefore giving her a much more masculine look. Within the 2 movies (Divergent and Insurgent) we have been exposed and been presented 2 different techniques. A woman with long hair to be powerful showing that females can be dominant too however we are then presented with the technique of women not being able to be as powerful as they don’t have the masculine not allowing them to be dominant therefore by cutting off the main characters hair would enable her to have the desired power.

However we still have Tobias whom is beside Beatrice therefore this may have been done in order to show that if Beatrice is ever at trouble which she has been Tobias is there to rescue her. This further links in with Anita Sarkeesian theory that within the media film industry females are seen to be as ‘Damsel in Distress’

In addition they are also seen to be the victim as many villains are after Beatrice swell as Tobias; therefore can be argued and said that the fact that they are both chased down they have equality between their powerlessness.

Males• American Snipper

American Sniper is an example the traditional representation of men within the film industry; strong, protective, powerful and dominant. The main character in this films a male, showing that the narrative will be about that gender group, this also shows women’s insignificance as the movie it self is based around killing and shooting.

In addition the female represented within this movie is shown as the stereotypical women of having beauty, and mainly focus on family. Even though a female role has been added in this movie (Taya), she does not have at least half of the males roles significance. This brings in the feminist view of how men press females and how they are the dominant gender of the society.
