8 Welcome To Armenia

Christmas is a time when the “Box of Miracles”opens to grant everyone with love, kindness and real-ization of dreams. Our souls are filled with cherishedfee-lings, strong belief and happy mood. And today,on this festive evening all Christians with their chil-dren and even small babies in their arms along with allwho await the Savior hurry to the manger to see thenewborn Jesus and the wise magi who came to presenttheir gifts to Infant Jesus. The happy celebration on thefeast’s eve is followed by a beautiful Holy Nativityperformance in Etchmiadzin, the holy center of allChristian people. Today the whole Christian worldresembles Bethlehem where the wise and the humbleshepherds worship the newborn Jesus Christ lying inthe little straw box. The performance imitates thenativity and epiphany of Christ: in Christian tradition, the Star of Bethlehem, also called the Christmas Star, revealed the birth of Jesus to the magi, and later ledthem to Bethlehem. The star appears in the nativitystory of the Gospel of Matthew, where magi from theeast are inspired by the star to travel to Jerusalem.

Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates theChrist’s Nativity and Baptism on January 6 withsolemn ceremonies. But in the whole world Christmasis celebrated on various days because of differences inJulian and Gregorian calendars. Catholic Church cele-brates Christmas on December 25 according to theJulian calendar and the Orthodox Church celebrates iton January 7 according to the Gregorian calendar. It isinteresting that until the 4th century Christians all overthe world had been celebrating Christmas on January6. But even after the adoption of Christianity manynations, especially the Romans, continued celebratingthe sun worship which fell on December 25.

To prevent the pagan traditions in 336 the RomanChurch declared December 25 the official birthday ofJesus Christ. Later Christmas day moved on December25 nearly in the whole East and January 6 remained asthe day of Epiphany and Christ’s Baptism. Adhering toancient traditions Armenian Apostolic Church cele-brates both holidays on January 6. The OrthodoxChurch begins celebrating the holiday on the evening ofJanuary 6 with the divine service in church and contin-ues the festive ceremonies on January 7.

According to the Armenian Church the week prece-ding Christmas is a lent period. People usually come outof the lent in the evening of January 5 with DivineLiturgy after which they take lights from church to theirhomes to burn them on the evening supper as a sign ofdivine light and blessing. Traditional Christmas dishesare fish as the symbol of Christianity, and rice madewith raisins; rice symbolizes the whole mankind and theraisins are the selected ones, who were chosen by God.

Next morning, on January 6 people visit church tobe present at St. Liturgy after which they take part in thece-remony of “Water Blessing” that symbolizes the bap-tism of Christ in Jordan River. The miraculous waterblessed by the Holy cross and sprayed with SacredChrism is distributed to people. Celebration and cus-toms differ from country to country but the holidayremains favorite one in Christian world. Christmas isconsidered to be the most domestic holiday which iscelebrated in a warm homely atmosphere. This is a peri-od of time when all are happy and hurry to congratulateeach other with the following words:

“Christ is Born and RevealedGreat Tidings to you and us”!

Welcome To Armenia

Varagavank (Monastery of Varag) was an Armenianmonastery known by locals as Yedi Kilise or Yedikilise (SevenChurches), reflecting its past glory. The ruins are still worth visit-ing. A few churches of the monastery remain in various states ofcollapse, two without roofs, one with frescoes, and some nicecarved crosses, particularly along the front under the arches. Oncethe best known monastery of Vaspurakan and seat of theArchbishop of Van, the monastery takes its name from Mt. Varag,on the southern slopes of which it is located.

It was founded in the early 11th century on a preexisting reli-gious site by Senekerim - Hovhannes, the Armenian King ofVaspurakan. It served as the necropolis of the Artsruni kings. Inlater centuries, it was the seat of the archbishop of the ArmenianChurch in Van.

The monastery was one of the great monastic centres of theArmenian Church and the richest and most celebrated monasteryof the Lake Van area.

During the Armenian Genocide the Turkish army attacked, burned, and destroyed much of the monastery. A significant partwas destroyed in the 1960s, while good sections have just barelysurvived until our days. The monastery was also greatly damagedas a result of Van earthquake in 2011.

Welcome To Armenia

In 1857 Mkrtich Khrimian, the future head of the ArmenianChurch, became father of Varagavank and made the monasteryeffectively independent and only a subordinate of the ArmenianPatriarchate of Constantinople.

He founded a printing house and began publishing ArtsivVaspurakani ("The Eagle of Vaspurakan"), the first newspaper inhistorical Armenia, which was published between 1858 and1864. He also established a modern school where subjects liketheology, music, grammar, geography, Armenian studies and his-tory were taught. The prominent novelist Raffi briefly taught atthe school. First graduates graduated in 1862. The English writerand traveler Henry F. Tozer described the monastery in 1881 as"important" and as having a "good school".

According to tradition, in the late third century St. Hripsimehid the remnant of the True Cross she wore on her neck on thesite of the monastery. In 653, when its location became known,Catholicos Nerses III the Builder built the Church of Surb Nshan(Holy Seal). Hewsen described the church as "a simple her-mitage". Catholicos Nerses also established the Feast of the HolyCross of Varag (Վարագա սուրբ խաչի տոն), celebrated by theArmenian Apostolic Church on the Sunday nearest to September28, always two weeks after the Feast of the Exaltation of theCross.
