M I N U T E S

The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of the Alvord Unified School District was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by President José Luis Pérez in the Board Room of the District Office. The Board adjourned to Closed Session at 5:31 p.m. and reconvened to Open Session at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Office. A quorum was established with the following Board Members in attendance: Present: Mr. José Luis Pérez, President Mr. Mike McKelroy, Vice President Mr. Greg Kraft, Member

Absent: Mr. K.R. Zack Earp, Clerk Mr. Ben Johnson II, Member The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was recited by those in attendance. 4. Presentations: a. City of Riverside Public Utilities Tree Power Program: Deputy Public Utilities Director, David H. Wright and Public Benefits/Customer Relations Manager, Atoya Mendez, presented Alvord Unified School District with a rebate check for $2,552.55 for participation in their program. The Board presented John Krick, teacher at La Sierra High School, with a certificate of appreciation for his efforts in coordinating this program for the District.

AUSD – Minutes – Meeting of September 16, 2004

Hearing Session: President Pérez extended an invitation to the audience to present matters to the Board on items not on the Agenda. The following individuals came forward:

Jerry Leslie, Vice President of AEA, relayed a pleasant experience he had recently watching a parent read to their young child. Mr. Leslie stated that a child’s first teacher is the parent and in order for Wells Middle School, which is in the fourth year of program improvement, or any other school to have a chance we need to find a way to empower parents.

Mike Gasca, community member, thanked the Board and administrators for their assistance with the La Sierra High School Business Academy and his ability to be on the La Sierra campus. Mr. Gasca stated that there are teacher trainings available through the Riverside County Office of Education at no cost to the District. Mr. Gasca suggested purchasing supplies through Office Depot who will provide the District with a 60% discount. Mr. Gasca expressed concern for splitting the lunch periods and removing the nutrition break at La Sierra High School. President Pérez requested that Mr. Gasca contact Dr. Wright’s office with the names of the free programs available through the Riverside County Office of Education.

Craig Adams, President of AEA, discussed SB 1661 and AB 205 related to health benefits for domestic partners and the potential impact this would have on the District. Mr. Adams continued discussion on the Williams Case and No Child Left Behind Act. The following students, parents and staff came forward to express their concerns with splitting the lunch periods at La Sierra High School:

Their concerns included the loss of tutoring time, ability to take make-up tests, participation/attendance in pep rallies, inability to attend club/sports meetings at lunch time and lack of social contact. Students presented the Board with letters from students. Mr. Kraft requested that the Superintendent share a copy of the final schedule with the Board prior to implementation.

Ben Johnson – Absent Zack Earp – Absent Mike McKelroy – Mr. McKelroy stated that he was proud of the students, teachers and parents for exercising their rights as Americans and speaking to the Board tonight. Mr. McKelroy wished Mr. and Mrs. Pérez a wonderful time on their cruise.
