PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Avon is a meandering river that ows through
the centre of Christchurch CBD. It was formed in the
last ice age, which makes it rather young in geologi-
cal time.
Since Christchurch was settled, the Avon River has
a had a strong presence in the city. One can either
experience the Avon River by meandering through
the Botanic Gardens in Hagley Park or one can enjoy
it by taking a ride with one of the well known punters.
My aim is to develop a project where the river doesnt
just ow through the city but becomes a part of the
LIVING city. Eating and drinking is always a large
part of society, whether its a rst date or brunch
with grandparents, food is always a good excuse to
take a break. Restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs are
a great way to bring together different cultures and
tastes from around the world. The idea is for a 24hr
program starting with cafes for breakfast in the morn-ing, and restaurants serving lunch and dinner. Then
when the kitchens close the young come out to play,
and restaurants transform into lively bars.
Using Auckland City as an example, the Town Hall
sits in the centre of the CBD as a landmark as much
as it is a functioning hall. The surrounding area of the
Civic however is always under development and ever
changing. It is alive with markets and performance.
During the Rugby World Cup it was a popular fan
zone and a screen was erected. Thousands stood
and cheered New Zealand. A transformable space is
perfect for a city trying to nd its feet again. A meet-
ing place called the Avon Park for all ages and kinds
of people. Hey meet me at the Avon Park in 15?

THE CHANGING SHAPE OF NEW ZEALAND
When completeting this research investigation I became curious with the vein like shapes in Aerial Photography. The Cantebury plains
are special to not just New Zealand but the world in that there is extensive river braiding. The reasearch we have completed shows
the softness and the newness of Christchurch and her District (it having not existed til the last ice age). This soft sedimentary outwash
was a perfect scenario for the glacier melt and weather to form braiding channels. The ows push it through and out creating not only
Cantebury but the majestic rivers that are a part of it

FORM GENERATION
Highlighting the bars/islands they form and how they are related to each other. Form generating from reoccuring shapes
BRAIDING SYSTEM
Using the images of paper models, Heighteld was applied and exploded to generate braided lines to create a language similar to
what was made with physical experiments.
FORM
Thinking about deection of ow and the pedestrian trafc behaviour. In New Zealand people are more
comfortable walking on the same side we drive on, the left. When spaces tighten, groups of people
form a V shape This has helped to inform the tapered ends of the form concept.
MATERIAL
The palette of materials includes concrete, steel and gla ss. The braiding of the steel and the vertical
language of the pivoting glass demanded a more simple material surface to contrast against. What was
originally meant to be lightweight and timber resulted in a concrete shell.
CONCRETE
The roof was to be light as there is some cantilever-
ing. Bubbledeck is a type of concrete that is hollowed
out by plastic balls. This makes them at times 35%
lighter. Instead of insulation Ive opted for hydronic
heating which works by using radiant heat from wa -
ter that is in the tubing. The walls are double leaf
concrete walls with a layer of insulation. The roof
has a subtle pitch and a gutter for drainage.
STEEL CABLE AND ANCHORS
The steel cable facade is purely aesthetic and does
not help my pavilion stand up. The steel braids by
crossing over each other. Some braids are more
dense and some are more far apart. This varies
throughout the perimeter of the building. Where
there is more mass it is more dense
PIVOTING GLASS DOORS
The pavilions are not to be mo nolithic objects but
have an air of transparency. The glass will be able to
open or even be pushed all to one side.
FOUNDATION SYSTEM
The ground and the oor are to sit ush. Instead of
surrounding the building with gravel there is a pe -
rimeter of scoria underneath the topsoil for added
drainage. The site is in Christchurch which has soil
prone to liquefaction. Conventional piles would have
to be several meters into the ground and as my site
is on the river bed this is not an ideal method. Raft
foundations spread the load over a large area. The
foundations are thicker around the perimeter and
under walls.
