1 General information andprecautions
The electrical system is of 12-volt negativeearth type. Power for the lights and allelectrical accessories is supplied by alead/acid type battery, which is charged bythe alternator.
This Chapter covers repair and serviceprocedures for the various electricalcomponents not associated with the engine.Information on the battery, alternator andstarter motor can be found in Chapter 5.
It should be noted that, prior to working onany component in the electrical system, thebattery negative terminal should first bedisconnected, to prevent the possibility ofelectrical short-circuits and/or fires.Caution: If the radio/cassette player fittedhas an anti-theft security code, (thestandard unit has), refer to the precautionin the Reference section of this manualbefore disconnecting the battery.
Warning: Before carrying outany work on the electricalsystem, read the precautions in“Safety first!” at the beginningof this manual, and in Chapter 5.
2 Electrical fault finding -general information
Note: Refer to the precautions given in“Safety first!” and in Section 1 of this Chapterbefore starting work. The following tests relateto testing of the main electrical circuits, andshould not be used to test delicate electroniccircuits (such as anti-lock braking systems),particularly where an electronic controlmodule is used.
General1 A typical electrical circuit consists of anelectrical component, any switches, relays,motors, fuses, fusible links or circuit breakersrelated to that component, and the wiring andconnectors which link the component to boththe battery and the chassis. To help topinpoint a problem in an electrical circuit,wiring diagrams are included after thischapter.2 Before attempting to diagnose an electricalfault, first study the appropriate wiringdiagram, to obtain a more completeunderstanding of the components included inthe particular circuit concerned. The possiblesources of a fault can be narrowed down bynoting whether other components related tothe circuit are operating properly. If severalcomponents or circuits fail at one time, theproblem is likely to be related to a shared fuseor earth connection.3 Electrical problems usually stem fromsimple causes, such as loose or corrodedconnections, a faulty earth connection, ablown fuse, a melted fusible link, or a faultyrelay (refer to Section 3 for details of testingrelays). Visually inspect the condition of allfuses, wires and connections in a problemcircuit before testing the components. Usethe wiring diagrams to determine whichterminal connections will need to be checked,in order to pinpoint the trouble-spot.4 The basic tools required for electrical fault-finding include a circuit tester or voltmeter (a12-volt bulb with a set of test leads can alsobe used for certain tests); a self-powered testlight (sometimes known as a continuity tester);an ohmmeter (to measure resistance); abattery and set of test leads; and a jumperwire, preferably with a circuit breaker or fuseincorporated, which can be used to bypasssuspect wires or electrical components.Before attempting to locate a problem withtest instruments, use the wiring diagram todetermine where to make the connections.5 To find the source of an intermittent wiringfault (usually due to a poor or dirtyconnection, or damaged wiring insulation), a“wiggle” test can be performed on the wiring.This involves wiggling the wiring by hand, tosee if the fault occurs as the wiring is moved.It should be possible to narrow down thesource of the fault to a particular section ofwiring. This method of testing can be used in
conjunction with any of the tests described inthe following sub-Sections.6 Apart from problems due to poorconnections, two basic types of fault canoccur in an electrical circuit - open-circuit, orshort-circuit.7 Open-circuit faults are caused by a breaksomewhere in the circuit, which preventscurrent from flowing. An open-circuit fault willprevent a component from working, but willnot cause the relevant circuit fuse to blow.8 Short-circuit faults are caused by a “short”somewhere in the circuit, which allows thecurrent flowing in the circuit to “escape” alongan alternative route, usually to earth. Short-circuit faults are normally caused by abreakdown in wiring insulation, which allows afeed wire to touch either another wire, or anearthed component such as the bodyshell. Ashort-circuit fault will normally cause therelevant circuit fuse to blow.
Finding an open-circuit9 To check for an open-circuit, connect onelead of a circuit tester or voltmeter to eitherthe negative battery terminal or a known goodearth.10 Connect the other lead to a connector inthe circuit being tested, preferably nearest tothe battery or fuse.11 Switch on the circuit, bearing in mind thatsome circuits are live only when the ignitionswitch is moved to a particular position.12 If voltage is present (indicated either bythe tester bulb lighting or a voltmeter reading,as applicable), this means that the section ofthe circuit between the relevant connectorand the battery is problem-free.13 Continue to check the remainder of thecircuit in the same fashion.14 When a point is reached at which novoltage is present, the problem must liebetween that point and the previous test pointwith voltage. Most problems can be traced toa broken, corroded or loose connection.
Finding a short-circuit15 To check for a short-circuit, firstdisconnect the load(s) from the circuit (loadsare the components which draw current froma circuit, such as bulbs, motors, heatingelements, etc).16 Remove the relevant fuse from the circuit,and connect a circuit tester or voltmeter to thefuse connections.17 Switch on the circuit, bearing in mind thatsome circuits are live only when the ignitionswitch is moved to a particular position.18 If voltage is present (indicated either bythe tester bulb lighting or a voltmeter reading,as applicable), this means that there is ashort-circuit.19 If no voltage is present, but the fuse stillblows with the load(s) connected, thisindicates an internal fault in the load(s).
Finding an earth fault20 The battery negative terminal is
connected to “earth” - the metal of theengine/transmission and the car body - andmost systems are wired so that they onlyreceive a positive feed, the current returningvia the metal of the car body. This means thatthe component mounting and the body formpart of that circuit. Loose or corrodedmountings can therefore cause a range ofelectrical faults, ranging from total failure of acircuit, to a puzzling partial fault. In particular,lights may shine dimly (especially whenanother circuit sharing the same earth point isin operation), motors (eg wiper motors or theradiator cooling fan motor) may run slowly,and the operation of one circuit may have anapparently-unrelated effect on another. Notethat on many vehicles, earth straps are usedbetween certain components, such as theengine/transmission and the body, usuallywhere there is no metal-to-metal contactbetween components, due to flexible rubbermountings, etc.21 To check whether a component isproperly earthed, disconnect the battery, andconnect one lead of an ohmmeter to a knowngood earth point. Connect the other lead tothe wire or earth connection being tested. Theresistance reading should be zero; if not,check the connection as follows.22 If an earth connection is thought to befaulty, dismantle the connection, and cleanback to bare metal both the bodyshell and thewire terminal or the component earthconnection mating surface. Be careful toremove all traces of dirt and corrosion, thenuse a knife to trim away any paint, so that aclean metal-to-metal joint is made. Onreassembly, tighten the joint fastenerssecurely; if a wire terminal is being refitted,use serrated washers between the terminaland the bodyshell, to ensure a clean andsecure connection. When the connection isremade, prevent the onset of corrosion in thefuture by applying a coat of petroleum jelly orsilicone-based grease, or by spraying on (atregular intervals) a proprietary ignition sealer.
3 Fuses and relays - general information
Fuses1 Fuses are designed to break a circuit whena predetermined current is reached, in orderto protect the components and wiring whichcould be damaged by excessive current flow.Any excessive current flow will be due to afault in the circuit, usually a short-circuit (seeSection 2).2 The main fuses are located in the fusebox,below the steering column on the driver’s sideof the facia.3 For access to the fuses, on models up to1992, turn the two securing clips through aquarter-turn, then drop the fusebox paneldown from the facia. On models from 1993,

prise off the cover to expose the fusebox (seeillustrations).4 Additional fuses may be located in thefusebox on the right-hand side of the enginecompartment, in front of the suspension strut,and/or at the front left-hand corner of theengine compartment (see illustration).5 A blown fuse can be recognised from itsmelted or broken wire.6 To remove a fuse, first ensure that therelevant circuit is switched off.7 Using the plastic tool provided in thefusebox, pull the fuse from its location (seeillustration).8 Spare fuses are provided in the blankterminal positions in the fusebox.9 Before renewing a blown fuse, trace andrectify the cause, and always use a fuse of thecorrect rating. Never substitute a fuse of ahigher rating, or make temporary repairs using
wire or metal foil; more serious damage, oreven fire, could result.10 Note that the fuses are colour-coded asfollows. Refer to the wiring diagrams fordetails of the fuse ratings and the circuitsprotected.

Relays13 A relay is an electrically-operated switch,which is used for the following reasons:a) A relay can switch a heavy current
remotely from the circuit in which thecurrent is flowing, allowing the use oflighter-gauge wiring and switch contacts.
b) A relay can receive more than one controlinput, unlike a mechanical switch.
c) A relay can have a timer function - forexample, the intermittent wiper relay.
14 Most of the relays are located under thefacia, behind the main fusebox, and mountedon various brackets around the steeringcolumn. The rear wiper motor relay is locatedin the tailgate, behind the tailgate trim panel.On some models, additional engine-relatedrelays are located in the relay box mounted atthe front left-hand corner of the enginecompartment, or in the left-hand corner of thescuttle (see illustrations).15 If a circuit or system controlled by a relaydevelops a fault, and the relay is suspect,operate the system. If the relay is functioning,

it should be possible to hear it “click” as it isenergised. If this is the case, the fault lies withthe components or wiring of the system. If therelay is not being energised, then either therelay is not receiving a main supply or aswitching voltage, or the relay itself is faulty.Testing is by the substitution of a known goodunit, but be careful - while some relays areidentical in appearance and in operation,others look similar but perform differentfunctions.16 To remove a relay, first ensure that therelevant circuit is switched off. The relay canthen simply be pulled out from the socket,and pushed back into position.

Ignition switch/steering column lock1 Refer to Chapter 10.
Steering column combination switches
Models up to 19922 Remove the steering column shrouds, asdescribed in Chapter 11.3 Working under the switch, unscrew the twoscrews securing the switch to the steeringcolumn bracket (see illustration).4 Withdraw the switch, and disconnect the
wiring connector(s). Note the routing of thewiring to aid refitting.5 Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuringthe wiring is routed as noted before removal.
Models from 19936 Proceed as described previously formodels up to 1992, but note that the securingscrews are accessed from the front of theswitch (see illustrations).
Radio/cassette player remote control and cruisecontrol stalk switches7 Remove the lower steering column shroudsas described in Chapter 11.8 Remove the securing screws, and withdrawthe switch from the column shroud.9 Disconnect the wiring plug(s) and removethe switch.

Facia-mounted pushbutton switchesModels up to 199211 Use a small flat-bladed screwdriver at thesides of the switch to release the plasticretaining tabs, then carefully prise the switchfrom the facia (see illustration).12 Disconnect the wiring plug and withdrawthe switch.13 To refit, reconnect the wiring plug, thenpush the switch into position in the facia.
Models from 199314 Proceed as described previously formodels up to 1992, but note that the securingclips are released by prising at the top andbottom of the switch (see illustration).

Headlight beam adjustment switch
Models up to 199215 The switch is integral with the adjustmentmechanism. Refer to Section 8 for details ofhow to remove the mechanism.
Models from 199316 Carefully prise the switch from the faciapanel using a small screwdriver (take care notto damage the trim), then disconnect thewiring plug and withdraw the switch.17 Refitting is a reversal of removal.
Heater blower motor switch18 The switch is integral with the heatercontrol panel, and cannot be renewedseparately. Removal and refitting details forthe heater control panel are given in Chapter 3.
Centre console-mounted switches
Front switches19 Prise out the trim panel from the bottomof the oddments tray below the handbrakelever (see illustration).20 Prise off the switch trim panel (seeillustration).21 Prise the switch from the centre console,and disconnect the wiring plug (seeillustration).22 Refitting is a reversal of removal.
Rear switches23 Prise the rear ashtray from the centreconsole.

Courtesy light switches
Door-pillar-mounted switches29 Open the door, then prise the rubbergaiter from the switch (see illustration).30 Remove the securing screw, thencarefully withdraw the switch from the doorpillar. Disconnect the wiring connector as itbecomes accessible, bearing in mind thedanger of losing the wiring connector (seeHaynes Hint).
31 Refitting is a reversal of removal, butensure that the rubber gaiter is correctlyseated on the switch.
Roof panel-mounted switches32 The switches are integral with the lights,and cannot be renewed separately.
Luggage compartment light switch
Saloon models33 Open the boot lid.34 The switch is located in a bracket at therear of the boot, and is operated by the bootlid hinge.35 Release the clips, and pull the switch fromthe bracket (see illustration).36 Disconnect the wiring plug and withdrawthe switch.37 Refitting is a reversal of removal.
Estate models38 The light is operated by a tilt-sensitiveswitch fitted inside the tailgate.39 Open the tailgate.40 Remove the screws, and withdraw theplastic trim panel from inside the tailgate.41 Working around the edge of the carpetedtrim panel, release the securing clips, ideallyusing a forked tool to avoid breaking the clips.Withdraw the carpeted panel.

5 Bulbs (exterior lights) -renewal 2
1 Whenever a bulb is renewed, note thefollowing points.a) Disconnect the battery negative lead
before starting work.b) Remember that, if the light has just been
in use, the bulb may be extremely hot.c) Always check the bulb contacts and
holder, ensuring that there is clean metal-to metal contact between the bulb and itslive(s) and earth. Clean off any corrosionor dirt before fitting a new bulb.
d) Wherever bayonet-type bulbs are fitted(see Specifications), ensure that the livecontact(s) bear firmly against the bulbcontact.
e) Always ensure the new bulb is of thecorrect rating, and that it is completelyclean before fitting it; this appliesparticularly to headlight/foglight bulbs(see below).
Headlight2 Working in the engine compartment,release the clip securing the cover to the rearof the headlight unit. Withdraw the cover (seeillustration).
3 Disconnect the wiring plug from the rear ofthe headlight bulb.4 Release the spring clip securing the bulb inthe light unit, then withdraw the bulb (seeillustrations).5 When handling the new bulb, use a tissueor clean cloth, to avoid touching the glasswith the fingers; moisture and grease from theskin can cause blackening and rapid failure ofthis type of bulb. If the glass is accidentallytouched, wipe it clean using methylated spirit.6 Install the new bulb, ensuring that it locatescorrectly in the light unit. Secure the bulb inposition with the spring clip, and reconnectthe wiring plug.7 Refit the cover to the rear of the light unit,and secure with the clip.
Front sidelight8 The sidelight bulb is located in the rear ofthe headlight housing.
9 Working in the engine compartment,release the clip securing the cover to the rearof the headlight unit.10 On models up to 1992, pull the bulbholderfrom the rear of the headlight unit. On modelsfrom 1993, it will be necessary to twist thebulbholder through a quarter turn before it canbe removed (see illustration).11 The bulb is a push-fit in the bulbholder(see illustration).12 Refitting is the reverse of the removalprocedure, ensuring that the bulbholder sealis in good condition.
Front direction indicator13 Working in the engine compartment,unhook the indicator light unit retaining springfrom the lug behind the light (see illustration).14 Pull the light forwards from the wing panel.15 Twist the bulbholder anti-clockwise torelease it from the light unit (see illustration).

Front direction indicator side repeater18 Twist the light unit a quarter-turn anti-clockwise, and carefully pull the unit from thewing panel, taking care not to damage thepaint.19 Twist the bulbholder anti-clockwise, andremove it from the light unit.20 The bulb is a bayonet-fit in the bulbholder(see illustration).21 Refitting is a reversal of the removalprocedure.
Headlight-mounted front driving light22 On certain models, a driving light ismounted in the headlight unit. The lightoperates when the headlights are switched tomain beam.23 Proceed as described previously in thisSection for the headlight bulb (see illustrations).
Front spoiler-mounted driving light/foglightNote: Some models are fitted with frontfoglights which have no securing screwsvisible from the front of the lens. At the time ofwriting, no information was available for thistype of foglight.24 Two alternative types of light assemblymay be fitted, depending on model. On somemodels, access to the bulb can be obtained
from the behind the spoiler. On other models,the light unit must be removed for access tothe bulb.25 On models where the light unit can bereached from behind the spoiler, reach up
behind the spoiler and disconnect the wiringfrom the light. Prise the rubber cover from thelight, then release the spring clip andwithdraw the bulb.26 On models where the rear of the light unitis covered by the spoiler, remove the twosecuring screws from the front of the light unitand withdraw the reflector/lens assembly.Disconnect the wiring from the bulb, thenrelease the spring clip and withdraw the bulb.27 When handling the new bulb, use a tissueor clean cloth, to avoid touching the glasswith the fingers; moisture and grease from theskin can cause blackening and rapid failure ofthis type of bulb. If the glass is accidentallytouched, wipe it clean using methylated spirit.28 Refitting is the reverse of the removalprocedure, ensuring that the bulb locatescorrectly in its housing.
Rear light cluster
Saloon models29 Open the boot lid.30 Squeeze the two retaining clips, andwithdraw the bulbholder from the rear of thelight unit (see illustration).31 The bulbs are a bayonet-fit in thebulbholder (see illustration).32 Fit the new bulb using a reversal of theremoval procedure.

Light mounted directly in spoilerNote: Some models are fitted with frontfoglights which have no securing screwsvisible from the front of the lens. At the time ofwriting, no information was available for thistype of foglight.19 To improve access, jack up the front ofthe vehicle and support securely on axlestands (see “Jacking and Vehicle Support”).20 Trace the wiring back from the rear of thefoglight, and disconnect the wiring connector.21 Slacken and remove the foglight securingnut, and withdraw the light unit from thespoiler. Recover any washers and spacers,noting their locations to ensure correctrefitting.22 Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuringthat any washers and spacers on the securingstud are positioned as noted before removal.
Rear light cluster

8 Headlight beam alignment -general information andcomponent renewal
1 Accurate adjustment of the headlight beamis only possible using optical beam-settingequipment, and this work should therefore becarried out by a Peugeot dealer or suitably-equipped workshop.2 For reference, the headlights can be finelyadjusted using a suitable-sized Allen key torotate the adjuster assemblies fitted to the
rear of each light unit. The outer adjusteralters the vertical height of the beam, whilstthe inner adjuster alters the horizontal positionof the beam (see illustrations). Prior toadjustment, ensure the vehicle is unladen, andthat the adjuster units (see below) are both setto position “0”, or “1”, as applicable.3 Each headlight unit is equipped with athree- or four-position vertical beam adjusterunit (depending on model) - this can be usedto adjust the headlight beam, to compensatefor the relevant load which the vehicle iscarrying. The adjuster units may beincorporated into the vertical beam adjusteron the back of the headlight, or on certainmodels, an adjuster switch is provided on thefacia. On models with adjusters mounted onthe headlights, access to them can be gainedwith the bonnet open. The adjusters shouldbe positioned as follows according type, andthe load being carried in the vehicle.

1 The purpose of this system is to inform thedriver that the lights have been left on oncethe ignition has been switched off; the buzzerwill sound when a door is opened. The systemconsists of a buzzer unit which is linked to thedriver’s door courtesy light switch.2 On models up to 1992, the buzzer unit islocated behind the fuses in the facia fusebox,and access can be obtained once the fuseboxcover has been removed. Refitting7 Refitting is a reversal of removal, but usethe string to pull the cable into position, andmake sure that the cable ball is correctlylocated in the bulkhead grommet. Coat theball with soapy water to aid refitting. If itproves difficult to engage the speedometercable with the rear of the speedometer,proceed as follows.a) Cut the two clips securing the ball/sleeve
assembly to the speedometer cable, andslide the ball/sleeve down the cable.
b) Push the cable until it engages with thespeedometer, then slide the ball sleeveinto position, and engage it with thebulkhead grommet.
c) Fit a hose clip or cable-tie to the lowerend of the ball/sleeve to secure it inposition on the cable.
d) If it still proves difficult to engage the cablewith the speedometer, remove theinstrument panel, then carry out the aboveprocedure, engaging the end of the cablewith the speedometer directly by hand,before refitting the instrument panel.

slacken and remove the spindle nut (seeillustration). Lift the blade off the glass, andpull the wiper arm off its spindle. If necessary,the arm can be levered off the spindle using asuitable flat-bladed screwdriver.
Refitting4 With the wiper arm and spindle splinesclean, refit the arm to the spindle. Align thewiper blade with the tape used on removal.5 Refit the spindle nut, tightening it securely,and clip the nut cover back into position.6 Reconnect the washer fluid hose.

Removal1 The assembly is located in the scuttle at therear of the engine compartment.
2 Disconnect the battery negative lead.3 Remove the scuttle grille panel asdescribed in Chapter 11.4 Where applicable, unscrew the securingbolts, and withdraw the cover from the motor.5 Disconnect the motor wiring connector.6 On models where there is insufficientclearance for the wiper linkage to passbetween the brake master cylinder and thescuttle, move the master cylinder to one sideas follows. Remove the nuts securing thebrake master cylinder to the vacuum servounit, then lift the master cylinder from thestuds, and pull it back slightly. Do notdisconnect any brake pipes.7 On models with an electronic controlmodule housing located in the rear corner ofthe engine compartment, which obscures theend wiper linkage securing bolt, the housingmust be removed as follows. Lift off thehousing cover, then detach the controlmodules, and remove the housing. Take greatcare not to damage the control modules -ideally, they should be removed from thevehicle and stored in a safe place(alternatively, temporarily refit the housing andthe control modules, once the wipermechanism has been removed.8 Unscrew the nuts securing the motor andlinkage to the scuttle, then manipulate theassembly out from the engine compartment(see illustrations).9 If desired, the motor can be separated fromthe linkage after unscrewing the nuts securingthe linkage to the motor spindle, and the threebolts securing the motor to the mountingbracket (see illustration).

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Carefully prise out and remove the smallplastic trim panels at each side of theradio/cassette player (see illustration).3 Insert the removal tools into the holesprovided at each side of the unit, until theylock into position. This will release thesecuring clips (see illustration).4 Using the tools, pull the unit forwards fromthe housing, and disconnect the wiringconnectors and the aerial lead (seeillustration).
5 Withdraw the unit from the facia.6 Note that some units may have a bracketand rubber buffer fitted to the rear panel. If anew unit is being fitted, transfer thesecomponents to the new unit. The buffer setsthe depth of the unit in the housing, andprevents the security cover fouling thecassette during insertion and ejection. Theseparts are available from dealers if they are notfitted.
Refitting7 To refit the unit, reconnect the wiring plugsand the aerial lead, and push the unit intoposition until the securing clips lock. Ensurethat the wiring harness and aerial lead arerouted so that they cannot rub against the unitcasing.8 Refit the plastic covers to each side of theunit, and reconnect the battery negative lead.9 Where applicable, to activate the unit, enterthe security code in accordance with themanufacturer’s instructions.
Radio/cassette player with “Peugeot” fixings

On models with an electricaerial, disconnect the motor wiring plug.14 Unscrew the aerial mounting bracketlower fixing bolt.15 Working at the top of the aerial, unscrewthe ring nut securing the assembly to the top
of the rear wing. Recover the sealing grommet(see illustrations).16 Withdraw the aerial assembly down intothe luggage compartment.17 Refitting is a reversal of removal.
Estate models18 The procedure is as described previouslyfor Saloon models, but the upper end of theaerial is retained by a grommet arrangementinstead of a ring nut. When removing theaerial, simply pull the top of the aerial downthrough the grommet (see illustrations).

General1 Some models in the range are fitted with ananti-theft alarm system as standard equipment.The alarm is automatically armed and disarmedusing the remote central locking transmitter(where applicable). When the system isactivated, the alarm indicator light, located onthe facia, will flash continuously. In addition tothe alarm function, the system alsoincorporates an engine immobiliser.2 Additionally, certain petrol engine modelsare fitted with a coded engine immobiliserdevice, operated by a key pad in the centreconsole.
Anti-theft alarm system
Early models3 Note that if the doors are operated usingthe key, the alarm will not be armed ordisarmed (as applicable). Locking the doorswith the central locking remote transmitter isthe only means of activating the alarm system.4 The alarm system protects the doors andboot or tailgate, as applicable.5 Should the alarm system become faulty, thevehicle should be taken to a Peugeot dealerfor examination.
Later models6 Note that if the doors are operated usingthe key, the alarm will not be armed ordisarmed (as applicable). If for some reasonthe remote central locking transmitter failswhilst the alarm is armed, the vehicle must beunlocked using the key. In this case, the alarmsystem will activate, and must be disarmedusing the master switch (see paragraph 8).7 The alarm system has switches on thebonnet, tailgate and each of the doors. It alsohas ultrasonic sensing, which detectsmovement inside the vehicle, via sensorsmounted on either side of the vehicle interior. Ifrequired, the ultrasonic sensing facility can beswitched off, whilst retaining the switched sideof the system. To switch off the ultrasonicsensing, with the ignition switch off, depressthe alarm switch (mounted on the right of thesteering column) until the alarm indicator lighton the facia is continuously lit. Now, when thedoors are locked using the remote centrallocking transmitter, and the alarm is armed,only the switched side of the alarm system isoperational (and the alarm indicator light willrevert to its flashing mode). This facility isuseful, as it allows you to leave thewindows/sunroof open, and still arm the alarm.If the windows/sunroof are left open with theultrasonic sensing not switched off, the alarmmay be falsely triggered by a gust of wind.8 To deactivate the complete alarm system, amaster switch is provided in the enginecompartment, behind the left-hand headlight.The switch is operated by a dedicated key,and is protected by a plastic cover.9 Should the alarm system become faulty, thevehicle should be taken to a Peugeot dealerfor examination.
Coded engine immobiliser
10 This device cuts out the enginemanagement system, and prevents the enginefrom being started unless a confidential codeis keyed into the pad located in the centreconsole.11 The code can be chosen by the owner,and full details are given in the vehiclehandbook.12 When the ignition is turned on, if the greenlight on the key pad is illuminated, the systemis not working, and the engine can be startednormally. If the red light is illuminated, thesystem is working (the engine cannot bestarted, and the alarm will sound if starting isattempted).13 To de-activate the system, enter thecorrect code, which should be confirmed byfour flashes from the green light, and fourbeeps. The red light should go out, and theengine can them be started.14 If the wrong code is entered, the red lightwill stay on, and the engine cannot be started.
Disconnecting the battery
Early models15 If the battery has been disconnected,when it is reconnected, the alarm will beactivated.16 The alarm must be de-activated using theremote central locking transmitter.
Later models17 The following precautions should beobserved when disconnecting andreconnecting the battery leads on a vehicleequipped with an alarm system.18 Before disconnecting the battery, de-activate the alarm siren, using the dedicatedkey.19 When reconnecting the battery, as soonas the battery is connected, the alarm isautomatically activated. Use the remotetransmitter to turn off the alarm, then activatethe alarm siren using the dedicated key.
24 Air bag system - generalinformation, precautions andsystem de-activation
General information1 A driver’s side air bag is fitted as standardequipment on later models, and is an optionon all other models. The air bag is fitted in thesteering wheel centre pad.2 The system is armed only when the ignitionis switched on, however, a reserve powersource maintains a power supply to thesystem in the event of a break in the mainelectrical supply. The system is activated by a
“g” sensor (deceleration sensor), and iscontrolled by an electronic control unit whichis integral with the steering wheel.3 The air bag is inflated by a gas generator,which forces the bag out from its location inthe steering wheel.
Precautions
General precautions4 The following precautions must beobserved when carrying out work on a vehicleequipped with an air bag.a) Do not disconnect the battery with the
engine running.b) Before carrying out any work in the vacinity
of the air bag, removal of any of the air bagcomponents, or any welding work on thevehicle, de-activate the system asdescribed in the following sub-Section.
c) Do not attempt to test any of the air bagsystem circuits using test meters or anyother test equipment.
d) If the air bag warning light comes on, orany fault in the system is suspected,consult a Peugeot dealer without delay.Do not attempt to carry out faultdiagnosis, or any dismantling of thecomponents.
Precautions to be taken whenhandling an air baga) Transport the air bag by itself, bag
upward.b) Do not put your arms around the air bag.c) Carry the air bag close to the body, bag
outward.d) Do not drop the air bag or expose it to
impacts.e) Do not try to dismantle the air bag unit.f) Do not connect any form of electrical
equipment to any part of the air bag circuit.
Precautions to be taken when storingan air bag unita) Store the unit in a cupboard with the air
bag upward.b) Do not expose the air bag to
temperatures above 80ºC.c) Do not expose the air bag to flames.d) Do not attempt to dispose of the air bag -
consult a Peugeot dealer.e) Never refit an air bag which is known to
be faulty or damaged.
De-activation of air bag system5 The system must be de-activated beforecarrying out any work on the air bagcomponents or surrounding area.a) Switch off the ignition.b) Remove the ignition key.c) Switch off all electrical equipment.

d) Disconnect the battery negative lead.e) Insulate the battery negative terminal and
the end of the battery negative lead toprevent any possibility of contact.
f) Wait for at least ten minutes beforecarrying out any further work.
Activation of air bag system6 To activate the system on completion ofany work, proceed as follows.a) Ensure that there are no occupants in the
vehicle, and that there are no looseobjects around the vacinity of the steeringwheel. Close the vehicle doors andwindows.
b) Insert the ignition key, and switch on theignition.
c) Reconnect the battery negative lead.d) Switch off the ignition.e) Switch on the ignition once more, and
check that the air bag warning light in thesteering wheel illuminates forapproximately 3 seconds and thenextinguishes.
f) Switch off the ignition.g) If the air bag warning light does not
operate as described in paragraph e),consult a Peugeot dealer before drivingthe vehicle.

General1 The air bag sensors are integral with theelectronic control unit, which is itself integralwith the steering wheel. The air bag warninglight is integral with the air bag unit.2 Any suspected faults with the air bagsystem should be referred to a Peugeot dealer- under no circumstances attempt to carry outany work other than removal and refitting ofthe air bag unit and/or the rotary connector,as described in the following paragraphs.
Air bag electronic control unit3 The unit is integral with the steering wheel,and cannot be removed independently. Referto Chapter 10 for steering wheel removal.
Air bag unit
Removal4 The air bag unit is an integral part of thesteering wheel centre boss.
5 De-activate the air bag system asdescribed in Section 24.6 Move the steering wheel as necessary foraccess to the two air bag unit securingscrews. The screws are located at the rear ofthe steering wheel boss.7 Remove the two air bag unit securingscrews (see illustration).8 Gently pull the air bag unit from the centreof the steering wheel.9 Carefully unclip the wiring connector fromthe air bag unit (use the fingers only, and pullthe connector upward from the air bag unit).10 If the air bag unit is to be stored for anylength of time, refer to the storage precautionsgiven in Section 24.
Refitting11 Refitting is a reversal of removal, bearingin mind the following points.a) Do not strike the air bag unit, or expose it
to impacts during refitting.b) Tighten the air bag unit securing screws
to the specified torque.c) On completion of refitting, activate the air
bag system as described in Section 24.
Air bag rotary connector
Removal12 Remove the air bag unit, as describedpreviously in this Section.13 Remove the steering wheel as describedin Chapter 10.14 Remove the securing screws, andwithdraw the lower steering column shroud.Allow the shroud to hang down, there is notneed to disconnect the wiring from thecomponents mounted inside the shroud.15 Lift off the upper column shroud.16 Disconnect the electrical supply connectorfrom the rotary connector (see illustration).
17 Carefully release the three securing clipsusing a screwdriver, then withdraw the rotaryconnector.
Refitting18 Refitting is a reversal of removal, bearingin mind the following points.19 Before refitting the steering columnshrouds and the air bag unit, check that thewiring harness is routed correctly by movingthe steering wheel to check that the wiring isnot trapped.20 Refit the steering wheel (see Chapter 10).21 Refit the air bag as described previouslyin this Section, but do not activate the air bagat this stage.22 On completion, move the steering columnto its fully raised position, then check that theclearance between the rear face of thesteering wheel and the front faces of thesteering column shrouds is 8.0 mm. If theclearance is not as specified, proceed asfollows.a) Working in the driver’s footwell, unclip the
carpet trim panel from under the facia foraccess to the steering column pinch-bolt.
b) Loosen the pinch-bolt, then slide thesteering shaft as necessary to give thespecified clearance between the steeringwheel and the shrouds.
c) Tighten the pinch-bolt, and refit the trimpanel.
