From the Pastor:

In a world in need of real, self-sacrificial love, St. Catherine of Siena draws us into a deeper contemplation of the love of Christ for each one of us (courtesy of Magnificat this month):

“ Open your mind’s eye and focus it on Christ crucified, for he is the fountain where we can drink to the full, drawing from him sweet loving desires…. If you do, your words and actions will become like an arrow drawn red-hot out of the fire, that wher-ever it is shot sets on fire everything it strikes, since it can’t help sharing what it has…. think of your soul as entering the fiery furnace of divine charity, and love’s power will make you shoot out and share what you have drawn from the fire.

… You see, it was for hunger that he died. So intense was that hunger that the force of love produced a sweat not of water but of drops of blood. How could a heart be so hard and stubborn as not to burst with emotion from the warmth and heat of this fire? Contemplating it, we can only be like flax stubble thrown into the fire; it can’t help burning, since it is the nature of fire to burn and to transform into itself whatever comes near it. So we, when we contemplate our Creator’s love, are drawn at once to love him and turn our affection completely to him. In him all the dampness of selfishness is dried up, and we take on the likeness of the Holy Spirit’s fire.

Knowing this love, we can encounter others with pure hearts overflowing with Christ’s mercy.

With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

Children’s Corner:Today’s Gospel

Often when we think of Jesus, we think of him as a friend; a nice guy who helps people and who taught us to love each other. He was and is all of

those things but there is also another side to being the “nice guy.” Sometimes people get mad at the nice guy. There are people who are more concerned with being popular, wealthy, and powerful than they are with helping others or making the world a better place. When a nice person points out that they should stop being mean to others, they get mad at the nice person. That is what today’s readings are about - choosing which side you want to be on – Jesus’ or those who put them-selves before others. This can be a very difficult choice be-cause if you choose to be on Jesus’ team, others may not want to be friends with you anymore. There is the chance, though, that some of the people who chose not to be on Jesus’ team will see all of the good things that you are doing and how you are making yourself and others happy by helping others, and they will change their minds and will join you on Jesus’ team. An example of this would be if you are friends with the popu-lar kids in school. One of them starts picking on another kid. If you stand up to the popular kid and defend the other kid, you run the risk of not being part of the popular group any more. You know, however, that being a member of Jesus’ team means that you cannot let anyone get picked-on. Another ex-ample would be to include everyone in the games at recess, even the kids who are not very athletic. Help them to learn the skills needed to play the game. Don’t worry about those who make mistakes. Play so that everyone has fun and feels includ-ed. We choose to be on Jesus’ team when our daily choices are ones that Jesus would make to help, serve and love others, and our world. ( adorers.org)
