THE RITE OF ORDINATION ELECTION OF THE CANDIDATES

After the candidates have been presented, the Bishop elects them for ordination. Applause is an appropriate sign of approval.

HOMILY

The Bishop speaks to the candidates and to all assembled about the offices and duties of the deacon.

PROMISE OF THE ELECT Since the Deacon serves under the authority of the Bishop, the candidates pledge

obedience and respect to their Ordinary Bishop and the Bishop’s successors. LITANY OF SUPPLICATION Litany of the Saints

The candidates lie prostrate before the altar as a sign of their humble submission to God’s will and so that the assembly, in communion with all the saints, may pray for them.

The essence of the Sacrament of Holy Orders: the Bishop lays his hands upon the head of each candidate, an action which confers the Holy Spirit, and then prays the words of consecration.

IN GRATITUDE

We first offer our thanks and praise to almighty God, who has given us this gift in order to share more fully in the eternal high priesthood of Jesus Christ. May the grace of Holy Orders bear fruit in our lives and in the lives of those we serve. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to all who have encouraged, taught, counseled, and mentored us during our years of formation. We also ask for your prayers during this final year of preparation for priestly ordination. We wish to thank St. John's Seminary and Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary. Specifically, we are grateful to our instructors, formators, and spiritual directors for all of their efforts that have led to this day and for their continued guidance. We thank our parents, families, and friends for their love and patience. We offer heartfelt prayers of thanksgiving to our Ordinary, Seán Patrick Cardinal O’Malley, and to the many people that have nurtured and supported us.
