11th October 2020 HARVEST THANKSGIVING WEEK

Harvest season marks an important date in the farming calendar as crops are harvested for food and animal feed. the harvest festival is the closest thing we have to a day of thanksgiving. Although today we can plan a fixed day for this celebration, in the past the harvest festival differed, based on when all the crops had been brought in. The whole community, including children, needing to help right up until the end, as lives depended on the success of the harvest. In the past they would be held as soon as the harvest had been completed and the final cartload triumphantly returned to the farm where the Harvest Supper, also known as the ‘Harvest Home’, would take place. At their most lavish the meal would brim with several meats, vegetables, puddings, tarts and ale, and would be accompanied by singing, drinking games and much reverie. Today we come together near and far, to give thanks for the harvest and each blessing we receive from our heavenly father…

Our Heavenly Father's love is so much more than we can comprehend. O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the works Thy Hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,Thy pow'r throughout The universe displayed,

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing ,sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in that on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shouts of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow In humble adoration And there proclaim, "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,

How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,

How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

The Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all

A minute’s silence – Out side the White house they have chairs representing the number of lives taken from the coronavirus within the USA –A stark of all who mourn loved ones. In the world we are talking of more than 1 million people. If you look at an empty chair around your table, it may remind you of a loved one who is not with you – how can we ever imagine over one million chairs empty- Please take time to reflect and give thanks for the lives which have returned to God’s side…silence….

Richard Yap Don Moen's 'Give Thanks' an everlasting classic Christian worship song. We made this for our community group worship. Praise God.

Give Thanks Give thanks with a grateful heart Give thanks to the Holy One Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son

Give thanks with a grateful heart Give thanks to the Holy One Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son And now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich Because of what the Lord has done for us" And now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich Because of what the Lord has done for us" Give thanks with a grateful heart (with a grateful heart) Give thanks to the Holy One (to the Holy One) Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son Give thanks with a grateful heart (with a grateful heart) Give thanks to the Holy One (to the Holy One) Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son And now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich Because of what the Lord has done for us" And now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich (I am rich) Because of what the Lord has done for us" Give thanks, we give thanks to You. Prayer/ Lord’s prayer O Lord, during our silence we have thought of all the people who are suffering today, whose lives are causing concern, and are in need of medical care. We pray for the lives which have been taken and for all who grieve, and are in need of your comfort…We hand over those who we light this candle for, and for all in the world…O Lord, we come to you with our harvest thanksgiving service, how we give you our thanks and feel so blessed for all that we have received, for all the holy and precious heavenly gifts which come from you alone … from the blessing of having loved ones in our lives, family and friends, to being part of a church family, to the times shared with a stranger who touched ours heart with a word, smile, acknowledgement. How grateful Lord we are that we can come and celebrate and give thanks for the rich harvest- for the beauty of the earth and all that has been created with your fair hands. For you moulded and formed the world into being, from heaven and earth, to land and see, from all that swims in the ocean to what flies within the sky- for all animals and mammals to reptiles

5

to the tinies of insects to all that the eye cannot see- Lord you created us all. You give water so that we won’t go thirsty, and food so we won’t starve- you give life and then call us back through death where our earthly shells are no more, into a heavenly spiritual existence. We have life and we have death, and the glorious sight of rebirth in the spring months, as we journey witnessing amazing colours, and smells, new growth, into long days and sunshine and growing weather- Lord as seeds are sown and nature begins to multiply, we give thanks for a glorious period- for young and old, for new birth to watching the farmer , the fisher man the vegetable and flower grower- to entering our shops and stores buying the supplies which fill our shelves, to cooking eating and having our fill - all comes from your love Lord. Help us not to take what we receive for granted, and lead us forth into a place where all that we have we will give thanks for with a grateful heart- forgive our wasteful ways and the times we’ve taken food and creation for granted- and where we have not appreciated your hand at work. In the words of your prayer, draw us closer to you as we say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

Summer sun are glowing

Youtube RUTH-SUMMER SUNS ARE GLOWING •23 Sep 2013

mkariobangi Summer suns are glowing over land and sea, happy light is flowing, bountiful and free. Everything rejoices in the mellow rays, all earth's thousand voices swell the psalm of praise. God's free mercy streameth over all the world, and his banner gleameth, everywhere unfurled. Broad and deep and glorious as the heaven above, shines in might victorious his eternal love. Lord, upon our blindness thy pure radiance pour; for thy loving-kindness make us love thee more. And when clouds are drifting dark across our sky, then, the veil uplifting, Father, be thou nigh. We will never doubt thee, though thou veil thy light: life is dark without thee;

7

death with thee is bright. Light of Light! shine o'er us on our pilgrim way, go thou still before us to the endless day.

Psalm 147 1 Praise the LORD.[a] How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him! 2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel.3 He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.6 The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground. 7 Sing to the LORD with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp. 8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. 9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of the warrior; 11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love. 12 Extol the LORD, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion. 13 He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you.14 He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.15 He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. 16 He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?18 He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.19 He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel.20 He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws.[b] Praise the LORD.

We see the fruitful harvest We see the fruitful harvest our gracious God provides, and how, in his abundance, our needs are satisfied. He sends the yearly seasons, and feeds with joy and care; pure light and living water poured out for all to share. Lord of all the harvest, creation brings you praise, so we will join the joyful song of everything you’ve made. This world of revelation unfolds before our eyes, the birds sing out God’s glories, his wisdom fills the skies. The seeds are sown to teach us of death that leads to life. The fruitful trees remind us to live each day in Christ. There is another harvest, the workers are so few. We’ll tend the seeds he’s planted and see his word bear fruit. Creation groans in longing for earth to be restored, that day of celebration: the harvest of the Lord. This song is set to the tune "Webb" by George James Webb, known as "Stand Up Stand Up For Jesus" (public domain). Reflection

Apple, damson, plum or pear, harvest home and time to share, kitchen filled with smells so nice, fresh chopped fruit and fragrant spice, pickles sharp, and chutney sweet. Home-made jam, a tasty

treat, gifts for neighbours, gifts for friends, nature’s bounty never ends. Some for you and some for me, perfect for a fireside tea.

12

There is nothing lovelier sitting beside a fire, relaxing with friends or on our own, having a cuppa tea, on a winters day, enjoying the gifts of nature- homemade fruit jam with a scone…As I walked the other day along the road I came across a bramble bush, laden full with rich, juicy berries already for a black bird to feast on, then around the corner what could I see a crab apple tree and a hazel nut -nature in its glory, the fruits of the earth already for the picking…

The straw has been baled and all carted away, the apples are rosey, the hedgerow gay, with amethyst berries that purple the lips, and sour matt - bloomed sloes and glossy red hips. Bright is the autumn when spiked conkers fall, to be captured by school boys in no time at all, when trees are aflame with amber and gold, and squirrels are scabbling for nuts in the mould. The beechmast lies thick, o’er the moist woodland bed, as hedgehog goes hunting a rest for his head, to curl up for winter before it’s too late, ere ice seals the duck pond, and frost gems the gate...

Autumn is here and as we receive a portrait of magnificent colours coming from all around us, it is wonderful to be able to sit back and observe nature in bloom getting ready for its winters rest……while winter is fast coming upon us, people are busy harvesting their produce ready to store or sell. As we entered Lockdown, and the majority of us having to stay at home, people were needing to find things to do. Apart from wine and chocolate sales sky rocking through the roof, many of us started to have a spring clean…once the house, sheds and garages were cleaned, as we waited for the refuge centres to reopen, people

13

turned to their gardens and began to grow flowers and vegetables. For many this was a beginning of a new adventure, learning to grow food to eat. As the shelves in the supermarkets were emptying people turned to the old way, I heard one person say…growing their supper. There is nothing nicer than going into the garden to dig up some potatoes, cut a lettuce, picking peas and searching for whatever is ready to eat, the freshness and taste makes you wonder why we had ever stopped growing our own in the first place…there was even a comic add with people planting rows of toilet paper.. Gardening has become a new hobby for many, and as we pass houses on our travels it’s amazing to see peoples handy work…I have always loved gardening, and during the lockdown months, I found it to continuingly be very relaxing…even though I have a young dog who likes to dig up whatever I’ve planted… Growing vegetable takes something a lot of us don’t have patience …as I planted wild flower seeds, in April, it was not until may they began to sprout out of the earth, having to water, even at times feeding, wondering, will they ever flower, June, July, passes and as we enter August , hurray, I had an array of different flowering wildflowers producing the most amazing colours, and they continued to bloom well into and through August…in Romans 8:25 “But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” I certainly am one who struggle with patience, when it comes to gardening …as my father and grandfather all had green fingers, I struggle to keep a plant alive….I was the one who planted carrots and ended up with a bunch of flowers…

As we garden have you ever wondered when is the correct time to be ever thankful. 1 Thessalonians 5:18, say “Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” But are we ever thankful? How often do we take a few minutes to thank God for provisions, care and blessings? Too often we limit our thanksgiving to particular situations where a crisis gets involved. Perhaps we pray for a loved one to be rescued from a difficult situation. When the crisis is over for a brief time, we’re deeply and sincerely grateful to God, and yes, we may express our thanks in prayer. Or perhaps we thank God for when we receive good news when we’ve been expecting bad, you will hear the words, “Thank God,” yet is it a direct call to God or simply words we utter without thinking. Feeling and expressing appreciation is good for us. Like any wise father, God wants us to learn to be thankful for all the gifts He has given us (James 1:17). It is in our best interest to be reminded that everything we have is a gift from Him. Without gratitude, we become arrogant and self-

14

centred. We begin to believe that we have achieved everything on our own. Thankfulness keeps our hearts in a right relationship to the Giver of all good gifts. Last year we received a wonderful gift of being able to celebrate harvest thanksgiving on Robert and Dorothy Craigie’s farm in one of their barns…there was something so very special celebrating our harvest festival on a working farm. They had gone to a lot of trouble to clear out their barn, and make it ready for our Sunday service…as chairs were laid out for bums on seats, tables places where people brought and put their produce on, food to be taken to Blythswood, and lunch for the bring and share celebration, afterwards. We sang out the harvest hymns, Give thankful with a grateful heart, Fill your hearts with joy and gladness, We plough the fields and scatter, For the fruits of all creation, we read the scriptures, we prayed giving thanks to God together feeling his presence. Not one of us thought we would be giving thanks in a different way this year, in a different circumstance, yet we are still giving thanks. Donald Clark saying to me, Robert that was great, how it should be, here on a farm. For his last harvest festival only a mile from the land he farmed - I am so ever grateful we had left a building and gone outside into Gods cathedral where the action was taking place- where crops are grown, where 32, 000 hens lay eggs, and the farmer working all hours God sends when it’s time for planting, cultivating and harvesting…Give thanks with a grateful heart, giving thanks to the Holy one..

As I watched a program about Australia a few months ago, the presenter visited a farm in the outback- hundreds of miles from the nearest city. The family talked about the draught they were having to endure, “when was the last time you had rain, three years ago, we’ve had the odd mist of rain , that’s all…see this picture”. and they showed a photograph of their ranch when it rained, greenery, richness and growth, today, its bleak, dry and colour of the earth red…as the wife of the farmer cried, she said. we live in hope, ever so grateful for what we still have…their livestock where dying or have been sold before lack of water would killed them, the ground was like dust due to heat of the sun and the lack of moisture yet this family said we are thankful for what we have…and it will rain one day… How we take the wet weather for granted…!!

15

Giving thanks also reminds us of how much we do have. Human beings are prone to covetousness. We tend to focus on what we don’t have. By giving thanks continually we are reminded of how much we do have. When we focus on blessings rather than wants, we are happier. When we start thanking God for the things, we usually take for granted, our perspective changes. We realize that we could not even exist without the merciful blessings of God.

Our Psalm 147 this morning was sung at the feast of the tabernacle and its about praising God and his goodness to the Jewish people after the captivity. Here they are probably rebuilding Jerusalem, so even in times of trail and hardship they’re able to praise God and give thanks for all that they have received from him. Today as we head into more restrictions, as we don’t know what this time next year will look like, we should be looking at what we have and give thanks. In life we all will go down a road which can be difficult and it can be hard to find something positive…as I watch the pigeons eating my cabbages, or the slugs at night leave my veggie garden with their fill, I should still be able to give thanks…for the potatoes have not got blight, the rabbits have not polished of my carrots and due to my lack of watering, my leeks seem to be surviving. Give thanks for a grateful heart for what we have… “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” We are to be thankful not only for the things we like, but for the circumstances we don’t like. When we purpose to thank God for everything that He allows to come into our lives, we keep bitterness at bay. We cannot be both thankful and bitter at the same time. We do not thank Him for evil, but that He is sustaining us through it (James 1:12). We don’t thank Him for harm He did not cause, but we thank Him when He gives us the strength to endure it (2 Corinthians 12:9). We thank Him for His promise that “all things will work together for the good, to those who love God and are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). We can have thankful hearts

16

toward God even when we do not feel thankful for the circumstance. We can grieve and still be thankful. We can hurt and still be thankful. We can be angry at sin and still be thankful toward God. That is what the Bible calls a “sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15). Giving thanks to God keeps our hearts in right relationship with Him and saves us from a host of harmful emotions and attitudes that will rob us of the peace God wants us to experience (Philippians 4:6–7) Be thankful with a grateful heart for each blessing we receive…

In the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit Amen

Hear us, O Lord, from heaven Thy dwelling-place: Like them of old, in vain we toil all night, Unless with us Thou go, who art the Light; Come then, O Lord, that we may see Thy face. Thou, Lord, dost rule the raging of the sea, When loud the storm and furious is the gale: Strong is Thine arm; our little barques are frail: Send us Thy help; remember Galilee. Our wives and children we commend to Thee: For them we plough the land and plough the deep; For them by day the golden corn we reap, By night the silver harvest of the sea. We thank Thee, Lord, for sunshine, dew, and rain, Broadcast from heaven by Thine almighty hand Source of all life, unnumbered as the sand Bird, beast, and fish, herb, fruit, and golden grain. O Bread of Life, Thou in Thy Word hast said, Who feeds in faith on Me shall never die! In mercy hear Thy hungry children’s cry, Father, give us this day our daily bread! Sow in our hearts the seeds of Thy dear love, That we may reap contentment, joy, and peace; And when at last our earthly labours cease, Grant us to join Thy harvest home above. In a world where there are so many divisions, may love break down the barriers and draw each person closer to the stranger where we can freely say, Peace be with you, my dear friend. In Christ may people from all back grounds, cultures, languages and respect and share, and love in the name of Christ. Amen Here is MY RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWHSHIP, saying, PEACE BE WITH YOU/ In times where we can not give someone a handshake, there is nothing stopping us giving a wave, a smile, saying the words- peace be with you.

Intercession

O God, what is happening within the world? we see, and hear, at times act upon and then we can be blind to the actions of others, we experience, and share, keep to ourselves and refuse to divulge. The weathers are changing and we are told due to humankind we are making the earth change in such a way that it will not recover- there is more warmth in places where it shouldn’t be, floods are occurring more often, wild fires , and natural disasters- Lord some shout out for rain and do not receive it while others long to dry out and receive sunshine for growth. Around the world we see a changing planet. For all who work to provide food , for those who fish the seas, rivers and oceans, to all who plant, and harvest their fields, orchards, barns, poly tunnels, and hillsides , to all who grow within their own gardens, selling, giving away freely to freezing and storing for the coming winter months…Lord we pray for those who work in factories, inside and out, making , packaging and delivering food we can take for granted on a daily basis…we pray for the milk man, the baker, the fish person, the corner shop owner, the farm-store and farmers market, to all who work within the supermarkets, serving, collecting and re-shelving, to those who drive long distances with produce---Lord for food recipes, for tea rooms, and cafes, restaurants to the carry out services… for the meals we cook within our own kitchens. Lord we give thanks for the cooks who feed those who are unable to do so, for the hungry and thirsty, the homeless and all who use food banks…to people in care homes and hospitals, the young and old, the sick and healthy….we pray for the employed to those who do not have a job or looking at redundancy. Lord in silence we hand over our prayers and concerns to you…Silence. In a world of so many, we give thanks for what we receive, we pray for those who do not have and ask that those who have will share with those who do not…in a world where so many cry out for help, may their tears draw people into action, and in a world where we take so much for granted, may we give thanks with a grateful heart , in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit Amen.

All Creatures of our God and King

This translation of this hymn from St Francis of Assisi's "Cantico di fratre sole" (Song of Brother Sun) is attributed to William Henry Draper (1855 - 1933). It was first published in the Public School Hymn Book, 1919, and is still popular today.

Joke time

Everybody loves a good laugh. As Proverbs 17:22 declares, “a joyful heart is good medicine.” There’s something about laughter that can restore the soul and provide some much-needed relief from stress and pain.

THANKSGIVING WISDOM A man in Chicago calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says,"I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough. "Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Dallas and tell her." Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this," She calls Chicago immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way."

THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON During a Sunday school lesson, a child learned about how God created human beings. The child became especially focused when the teacher explained how Eve was created from Adam’s ribs. Later in the week, the boy’s mother saw him lying down on the floor, so she asked him what was wrong. His reply was priceless: “Mom, I have a pain in my side—I think I’m getting a wife.”

A CHILDS POINT OF VIEW!

The story of Adam and Eve was being carefully explained in the children's Sunday School class. Following the story, the children were asked to draw some picture that would illustrate the story. Little Bobby drew a picture of a car with three people in it. In the front seat was a man and in the back seat, a man and a woman. The teacher was at a loss to understand how this illustrated the lesson of Adam and Eve. Little Bobby was prompt with his explanation. "Why, this is God driving Adam and Eve out of the garden”.

Prayer/ Lord’s prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

We plough the fields and scatter

We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand;

he sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain.

Chorus : All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above,

then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all his love.

He only is the Maker of all things near and far; he paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star; the winds and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed;

much more to us, his children, he gives our daily bread- Chorus We thank thee, then, O Father, for all things bright and good,

the seed time and the harvest, our life, our health, and food; no gifts have we to offer, for all thy love imparts,

and, what thou most desirest, our humble, thankful hearts. Chorus

Amen
