SYMPOSIUM STRUCTURE & EVENTS
Workshop 1 Energy Efficient Separation Systems
Co-ordinator: Prof Gurkan Sin, Technical University of Denmark
The aim of this workshop is to articulate the importance of having energy efficient separation systems. A brief overview on how the energy efficient separation technologies can contribute to the overall efficiency and sustainability of the process industry will be discussed. Experts from industries and academia will be sharing their viewpoints on various aspects of energy efficient challenge of separation processes and how to solve them. The workshop is sponsored by IEA Energy Technology Network: IEA-Industry – an implementing agreement established under the auspices of International Energy Agency (IEA).
Venue: Dept. of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore, Block E5, #02-32, 4 Engineering Drive 4, Singapore 117576.
Technical Tour 1 This tour brings you to the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) in Jurong Island. ICES is a member of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The ICES lab tour will include visit to the Fuel Cell lab (CO2 capture, fuel cells, and fluidized bed reactor), Kilo lab (batch and continuous processing at pilot scale), Experimental Power Grid Centre, and the viewing platform for a look out across Jurong Island from ICES. Jurong Island is the centerpiece of Singapore's chemicals industry, hosting more than 95 global companies including Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, DuPont, BASF, Sumitomo Chemicals, and Mitsui Chemicals.
Workshop 2 Teaching Product and Process Design
Co-ordinator: Prof Warren D. Seider, University of Pennsylvania
This workshop aims to introduce new approaches for teaching product and process design. Specialists on each of this area will first introduce the various topics on them as well as explain how they are inter-related to each other. Further, useful techniques such as equipment sizing and cost estimation, profitability analysis, and six-sigma methods with respect to process and product design will also be presented to the audiences.
Venue: Dept. of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore, Block E5, #03-19, 4 Engineering Drive 4, Singapore 117576.
Technical Tour 2 This tour introduces you to PUB-NEWater. The NEWater Visitor Centre is the focal point of PUB's public education on NEWater. First opened in 2003, the Centre highlights the importance of water and how Singapore leverages on advances in technology to reclaim water. Visitors are able to view firsthand the operation of the advanced dual-membrane and ultraviolet technologies used to produce NEWater. NEWater Visitor Centre's popularity has won it the Best Sightseeing/Leisure/Educational Programme at the 20th Tourism Awards 2005 and the IWA Marketing & Communication Award 2006.
