Life-long swimmer masters her competition By Susan J. White

While aome people are sUJJ search· Ina for the fOW1taln of youth, Palatille's Bobby Turcotte bas already found those waters.

Tbe 60-year-old Palatine resident returns to I.be water almost every day u she has since her clilldbood to put In her laps, c.lear her mind and hone her competitive ed&e·

Once an Ol)'mplc prospect, Turcotte Is currently ranked among the top 10 masters swimmers In I.be world In four evenu: I.be ~meter, 100..me~r and 200-meter backstroke and the l.SOO-meter freestyle. Next year those strokes .will carry her to Australia to compete In the masters world championships.

Supplementing her pool time with aerobic classes and tennis usually means you can tlnd Turcotte at I.be Forest Grove Athletic Club In Palatine at least four hours a day. Even the best athlete• can get tired ot I.be daily g:rtnd and sore muscles, especlaUy when they've been dolna It tor as many years as Turcotte has, but she's hanging tough.

" I LIJCE myaelf and I want to stay young. Age Is not a chronological thing, It'• bow you feel about younelf. U you can get In the pool 'and swim lllte that you feel young,'' Turcotte said.

And th.e days that ue the touabest to get aotng, the days when sh~Just wants to give bee body a rest, are also the most rewarding, Turcotte said. "As I go out the door It feels so good to have accomplished what I didn't want to do," she said.

'nlere Isn't muclhbat she can't force herself to do U she puts her mind to It. Turcotte sUJJ races I.be 200-meter but· terfly twice a year, and as any swim· mer knows, Uils Is one of the toughest races there la. "I hate It, I do It Ju..t to prove to myself I can do Jt ," she said grimacing.

Throughout her Ille, Turcotte has been proving herself through swim· ming.

SHE STARTED SWIMMING as a chlld when she was given I.be choice between swlmmln.g and violin lessons. "Some choice," she lauabed. Turcotte was a natural In the water a.nd began swtmmlng competitively through I.be Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) when she was In high scbool, but there was no school·sanctloned competition. "In my generation boys were more Important," Tu.rcotte explained.

She went on to swim for DePaul University, where girls may have ~lved a UtUe more attention because there were not as many boys In scbool. ''There w~ a war eotna on, there were no bo)'I around and when It was over they came back slowly," she said ..

"My class had 13 boys, my hu..band was one of those boys," Turcotte saJd with a grin. Yes, she admits, she was one of lucky ones.

Turcotte may have been lucky, but she was allo good, very good ln the swimmln& pool. She would have com· peted In the 19" Ol)'mplcs, had they not been cancelled because of the war. By tl\e 1948 Olympics, Turcotte had mar· r1ed and was pregnant with the first of

TURCOTTE DOESN'T WUTE time tblnk1ng about what could have been, abe works to accomplish what's IOlna ID be. U pressed, abe wisttully admits her revet at not going to I.be Olympics. ''I was too young to Jcnow what I was m1ssl.ne." Turcotte said.

She WUJl't too young, however to work out a schedule that allowed her to iteepJwtmmfng after her first Cblld WU born. "The next year my hu..band and my mother bsbYsat wblle. I went to Florida for the nationals and I awam as 1rood as I ever did.' ' Turcotte said.

Now the chlldren, all five of them swimmers, are grown up and out of the house. Turcotte has four grandchildren with three more on the way. And with ber tamJly grown up and her Job as Bllebler YMCA procram director behind lier, Turcotte has more time I.ban ever IDwor\: on her swtmmtng.

TODAY 'nJBCOTl'B SWIMS wtth I.be lJ.ocoln Masters, a group of some of I.be bestmasters swimmers In I1llaots who gof toget.ber ID form top callber relay teams. But even with all her work, Turcotte Isn't dropping her times. "You don't get better as you get older," she sighed, ''ID I.be beginntna It was very hard to take. I'd call home from a nattonaJ meeland say I'm never gotna aaatn. Now It almost doesn't matter, you're there for the trtendsbip and the tun."

Ustenlng to Turcotte tallt about the meets and f1ndlna her name on I.be lnt.enlltlonal ranking sheets, It's obv1· ous I.be competition Is sUll a big put ot lt - U she Is llowtna"down a little.

Turcotte swims a mile In about 28 minutes now, no small teat for most people even half her age, but she doesn't let the conversation go too fa.r before pointing out that she used to swim the same distance In 25 minutes.

Reprinted from NEM NEWS .. . Wi t h the USMS National Cha!ll)ionshi ps a shor t time away, Tom thought you might like t o know how to exceed your current expectations of how fast you will go . (Thanks , Tom)

RACE PACE ... Your bOO{. mind and sp1r1t need to experience the Pll:e you want to !1J in your best event. You should ~tually swim some .shoc!- one fourth to one half the rll:e- cttstance at that pa::e 1n pr~Uce, th1nk1ng very hard abottt what you ere fee11ng. lntroouce your senses to that higher consciousness of what it feels Hke, which ts considerably cttfferent from swimming 1 o~ or 2oi slower. When I oo th1s. I am pert1cularly ttNare of these~:

I . Higher bOO{ pos1t1on: When I speed up. I th1nk of an outboard motor boot that~ from pushing through the water to planing over the top when the speed picks up. My coll• ~h talked of swimming over a barrel to heiglten the fee11ng of ~tung on top of the water insteocl of plowing thf'Ol.4\ it. H1gl shoulder rf!DNery and a tucked in stom~ ( ~ luck I) help.

2. Different rhythm: My timing seems m<X'e than a ~ off when I first try to speed up. It's as if I was struggling wlth a new dance step. I cbn't despair when this feeling makes me wonoor why I am trying to oo something different. It grin.ally substdes, repltaJd with that~ feeling of moving through the water naturally.

3. Altered breathing: That nice little spot you automatically !1l to eoch t1me you want some air may relocate. However, lt is there and may be in a better spot s1nce. being higher in the water. you ht!ve less distance to !1l to get your tm:I "above" water. And remember that you are breathing in the trough- wake if you prefer- that your head makes. When you speed up. the trough gets ~er. also helping you ~t that gloriousa1r.

4. More K1ci<tng: You wm probably ftnc:I thet ktci<tng har~r relative to your arm pulling will make a big difference tf 1) ft's a short roce and 2) you OOl'l't h8Ve one of those negative kicks- you know the kind I mean, the k1ck that seems to propel you much more slowly than the others in the pool. A ~ kick pushes you up out of the water . much Hke that motor on the outboard.

5. faster fatigue: There's no two Wfl(S about th1s foct. When you swim faster , you expend more energy and run out of gas- at least start to ping on the hfllssooner. You need to know how and when it will come on, so when you ere octually rocing you will not panic, change gears • or. more to be avoided, wimp out to avoid the problem well before you start to poop out.

moment. In order to avoid ~ing negative, limit the speed dt~tance you !1J to only as much as you feel comoleteJv !JOO oomg. Remember the object is to develop more then a noa:nng acQUaintance with the feeling oi sw1mm1ng at r~ pa:e, not to test your stamina. You should stick your toe in the pit of fatigue while ootng this fast stuff , but only to improve your abillty to keep your stroke together.

A serond maj<X' caution is not to tamper too much with whatever stroke you h8Ve been using. Wh11e you may discover that it 008Sn't oo all that you want it to oo when you rev it up , that ~·t mean that maktng ~ ~ly will solve the problem. It can result In your not finding a better strOke. while losing the feel of your old stroke. That's a legitimate cause for deep panic.

A third major caution is not to to your dalliance with speed on top of your regular workout. You should be really fresh when you speed up. If you must continue to oo your full wor~out. oo the speed work early tn the workout.

TAPERING ... Without !1J1nQ tnto the oota11s of what coostttutes the riglt taper- which is far from sctentifically known- I ur~ you to cut oown on the total yards and/or the intensity at which you swim them. I cbn't consider the two weeks before the big r~ as the t1me to ~ to my conditioning. The taper should ~plish three things: 1) rest your muscles. 2) be not too much more than a hefty warmup which- I believe- will hold your conditioning level . and 3) fine tune your abilities to perform at the speed you would like to !JJ. I've~ success with a rm:e pa::e set using mi distances and I.ooo rest intervals.

TURNS ... A turn at a speed faster than you have been !J)ing is a surprise. Everything M(>pens so fest. Your legs come over much more easily. You find yourself pushing off the wall sooner. Your strarn Hntng, <X' la of. on the gltoo from the wall bfnlmes more notta.at>le. There is noth1ng ltke turning fest to leern to turn fest. One wt1f to ~ the experience without the fatigue , allowing you to focus on turns and nothing else. is to start about five to etglt yards from the wall and turn it on. When you come off the wall take at lecst one strOke at rll:e ~ before thrott11ng down. One stroke without breathing helps when sprinting.

STARTS ... Get r~intedwith those blocks that you have been ignoring all seeson. Try a few starts. It's important you !1l though the motions. Think of r•ting fast. Get out over the ~ater . Streamltne your bOO{ as you enter the water , hands first preferred. Take your first stroke or two before you take a breath to conserve the speed from the start- the fastest you will be in the roce. Weismuller . ~ab . and trock starts all have thetr bners.

G<XXZt.ES ... N<w.''s the tlme to chock out your 1JqJles in dive starts. ~ightened straps, weOJed into your eye sockets, and tuckmg your hetJj when you hit the water help.

A major cautton is to avoid turning th15 brief fl1ng in the Learning what it feels like to swim with them as a bit in fast lane into a crash course for better conditioning. It's your mouth , under your nose , or filled with water while too late f~r that. If you oo try. you will only sucaBt in askew in your eyes can be tried. Learning how to rip them squanoorrng whatever level of condition you have at the off while swimming is another skill to consioor 4-68

Swimming News NEWSLETTERS - I wish to thank all of you who s~nd me yo~r Newsletters! It keeps my calendar filled. Gives me interesting articles to reproduce. Hopefully, things that are of interest to others. The April issue of NEM MEWS takes the p~ize .. There were many interesting bits and pieces i n the last issue. Police said Andrew J. Marino, 40, of 18 Tiber St . was charged with simple assault and arraigned in District Court yesterday, where he was released on $500 personal recognizance.

According to poli ce reports, Frederick Talbot, 38, of Coventry told officers that he and Marino bumped into each other while they were swimming laps in one of the pool lanes shortly after noon.

Police said Talbot was not injured and declined medical treatment. QUESTION_- Who_invented hand paddles and experimented with flippers? Answer: Benjamin Franklin . In V~n ~oren, Benjamin Franklin, Garden Ci ty Publish i ng (1941) at page 17 one finds the following:

"When I was a boy I made two oval palettes," he wrote l?ng afterwards to Barbeu Dubourg, "each about ten inches long and six broad, with a hole for the thumb , in order to retain it fast in the palm of my hand. They much resembled a painter's palettes . In swimming I pushed the edges of these forward, and I struck the water with their flat surfaces as I drew them back. I remember I swam f~ster by means of these palettes, but they fatigued my writs. I also fitted to the soles of my feet a kind of sandals; but I was not satisfied with them, because I observed that the stroke is partly given by the inside of the feet and the ankles , and not entirely with the sole.s of the feet . . .
