Always have amembership or reinstatement applicationstatement with you, or you can also findone on line on our website. Volunteer tohelp out with our programs throughoutthe year. Especially those for our childrenand our Veterans. Also, help let ourcommunity know what a giving and funorganization we are. The Elks have joined forces with theDepartment of Veterans Affairs to helpend veteran homelessness. The Elks National Veterans ServiceCommission has pledged four million dol-lars in support over the next four yearsto ensure the success of this initiative.Along with pledging funds, the Elks Na-tional Veterans Service Commission isenlisting the help of their 800,000 mem-bers in all 50 states. Together, we canprovide the tools and support necessaryfor homeless veterans to transition suc-cessfully into healthier and more stablelives. “We’re so excited about partnering withthe Elks on this important issue facingthe lives of so many Veterans,” said De-partment of Veterans Affairs’ SecretaryBob McDonald. “As we move closer to theend of the year, partnerships likes thesewill be critical to ensuring that all Veter-ans have access to safe and affordablehousing.” The program will launch this winterat three facilities in the Chicago area;Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines,Ill.; Jesse Brown VA Medical Center inChicago, Ill.; and Captain James A. LovellFederal Health Care Center in NorthChicago, Ill. Specifically, the Elks will assist the VAwith 8 targeted objectives, all aimed athelping veterans find safe, stable homes.1. The Elks will facilitate a national pub-lic awareness campaign ... that will touchthousands of communities.2. The Elks will promote the HousingNavigator model to all of its Lodges andencourage them to participate in this ef-fort in all communities they serve.3. The Elks will motivate each of itsLodges to facilitate at least one event and/

or partner with coalition members withinthe next year to assist in the coordina-tion of ending veteran homelessness.4. The Elks will take on the mission ofending veteran homelessness in three pi-lot cities in phase one: Chicago, New Yorkand D.C./Alexandria.5. The Elks will lead and coordinate com-munity entities and efforts to provideWelcome Home Kits to veterans who re-ceive HUD-VASH vouchers in pilot cit-ies.6. The Elks will work with coalition part-ners in pilot cities to provide rapid rehous-ing assistance (first/last month's rent, utilities, co-signing home loans) for vet-erans who are homeless or at risk of be-ing homeless.7. The Elks will conduct housing fairs orparticipate in existing housing fairshosted by VA facilities or other VA part-ners in the pilot cities, as well as encour-age Lodges to encourage landlords to ac-cept HUD-VASH vouchers and not dis-criminate against veterans.8. The Elks will be willing to assist inhousing navigation process as deemedappropriate. The Elks will act as catch-all volunteers, ready to assist at the drop of the hat. Of-ten times, this can be as simple as beinga friend. It can be difficult to change hab-its and transition from a life on the street. We encourage Elks to set up a monthlyvisit or dinner at the Lodge, and calltransitioning veterans a few times eachmonth to check in. Welcome veteranshome, and into the Elks family. For further information, contact theElks National Veterans Service Commis-sion office at [email protected], or at 773-755-4736. When I was a young and dumber manI never ate breakfast. It was my goal tosleep as late as I could and then go workmy “million” hour work week, often witha cup of black coffee serving as mymorning bowl of Wheaties. A couple hoursinto my day I would notice how hungry Iwould get. I was ready to smash anythingedible, usually garbage to satiate myhunger. I also had occasionally felt faintand had terrible headaches. That allchanged when I met my wife. She livesby the “most important meal” mantra.Even if it’s just a quick egg, this womaneats breakfast every day. I noticed how much better I felt when Iwould pause to take in nourishmentbefore rushing out the door. I didn’t getso agitated and suddenly didn’t haveheadaches or feel nauseous anymore. Now in my wizened age I do eatbreakfast every morning with my wife andson. It’s definitely something I want himto appreciate early on. In our “plugged in”and “instant” everything society it’simportant to take time to keep the mostimportant machine in good maintenance.

• breakfast should be eaten withintwo hours of waking

• a healthy breakfast should providecalories in the range of 20-35% ofyour guideline daily allowance(GDA).

• Eating breakfast has long termhealth benefits. It can reduce obesity, high blood pressure, heart diseaseand diabetes..

• Research shows that children whoeat breakfast have healthier weightsthan children who skip breakfastand also perform better on memorytests.

NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE

Studies show making breakfast adaily habit can help you lose weight -and keep it off. "People skip breakfast thinkingthey're cutting calories, but by mid-morning and lunch, that person isstarved," says Milton Stokes, RD, MPH,chief dietitian for St. Barnabas Hospi-tal in New York City. "Breakfast skip-pers replace calories during the daywith mindless nibbling, bingeing atlunch and dinner. They set themselvesup for failure."

Details To Follow

By now theHoliday Seasonhas passed,Christy and Ihope yours wasa happy one. Now, final worktoward our2015-2016 goalsare upon us.Rick Gathenour NationalMembershipand Public Rela-tionsManage says“Our fate will be defined by March. ” Atthis point our Michigan membership isup 521 members and on target to set ahistoric mark by having a positive growthfor lodge year! Thanks to all of you who have been re-cruiting and building your lodges. Nowcomes the tough part. We have 1,999 de-linquent members. They joined us withexcitement and now are lost for one rea-son or another. We, “the lodges,” need toreach out and encourage them to pay upand become active within their lodge. Weneed to call and talk to them as well aswrite to them. Talk to them about howtheir support (through paying their dues)has an impact on the community. Tellthem what their financial contributiondoes for our veterans and children. Ex-plain that just a little time on their partparticipating with a lodge event can makea difference to someone that we “touch.”Pete, Joe, Lou and I are building a teamwithin the membership committee to ac-tually make calls to your delinquent mem-bers upon your request for help. We arethere for the lodges and want to help withextra “manpower” to help build member-ship and continue your lodge. Due to personal issues Walt Haywardhas to step down as our Business Prac-tice/Officer Training Chairman. CarlosMontilla has graciously accepted to as-sume the chairman’s role and help to fin-ish our year, his contact information isbelow. As the lodges prepare to elect newofficers for the 2016-2017 lodge year, nowis the time to contact Carlos and go to an“Officers Training” workshop. So manyof our lodges have new officers that do nothave a lot of experience in the chairs. This workshop will help build theirknowledge of the BPOE and prepare themfor their role for this upcoming year. We have fine trainers throughout theState that can help. Get on board soon! In closing this message, the State Of-ficers will be attending District RitualCompetition, Hoop Shoot Contests, Schol-arship judging, and President’s nightevents over the next few months. I hopeto see you there.
